|
The project strengthens indust...ry unions in Mozambique by training officials and activists in organizing and negotiation skills, as well as labour legislation. The aim is to find ways to make use of the existing legislation and monitoring mechanisms in promotion of decent working conditions. Especially participation of young and precarious workers in union activities is encouraged. The unions negotiate new and better company level collective agreements, paying attention especially on the position of young and female workers. The union density of the three unions is on average now 69 %, which is probably among the highest in Africa. Women's participation in training and campaigning activities has gone up to around 45 %, and an increasing number of young workers have joined the unions and become active in them. Manuals produced with support of the project on negotiations, grievance handling, occupational health and safety and the most important aspects of the labour legislation are widely in use of shop stewards, OHS representatives, trainers and local level activists. Union work is increasingly done at regional and workplace levels, and there has been good progress especially in intensifying health and safety measures. The close cooperation among the unions and communications trainings bring positive visibility among membership and in the society at large. Local level actions, youth activities and equality work will be further strengthened. Emphasis on health and safety especially in mining, chemical and textile sectors is also seen important. The labour relations become more insecure and fragmented all the time, and only negotiation and advocacy work of stronger unions can prevent the workers' conditions getting even worse than they are. Currently, there are around 50 000 people in formal working relationships in the sectors that the Mozambican industry unions represent, but the number is steadily growing due to new investments. As a result of the project, working conditions of these people will improve. The beneficiaries are industry sector workers and their stronger and more capable unions. The project is implemented with IndustriALL Global Union and all three Mozambican affiliates of it.

F.A: STRENGTHENING CIVIL SOCIE...TY PARTICIPATION IN CONFLICT AFFECTED AREAS IN MYANMAR
more
|
F.a: Strengthening civil socie...ty participation in conflict affected areas in Myanmar
more
|
Over six decades of armed conf...lict in Myanmar border areas have had a severe impact on the development of the areas and allowed only a limited space for active and inclusive civil society, and dialogue between the Union Government and Ethnic communities, and among different groups, including ethnic and religious groups, in conflict affected areas. People and communities in conflict-affected border areas are denied their rights to basic services such as education and healthcare, as well as meaningful participation in decision-making and the peace process. The absence of peace and dialogue has left Civil Society Organizations (CSO) from conflict affected ethnic area largely outside of official peace process. Additionally, CSOs in the remote areas, still lack the capacities and space to participate in local and national development, and effectively represent their communities. The project aims to contribute to promoting active and inclusive civil society, and supporting CSOs in Kayah States to participate in peaceful development and promote the rights of their communities. More specifically, the project will work closely with CSOs to improve their organizational capacity by assessing and addressing capacity gaps and continuously mentoring the development of key processes. There will be a special attention paid to inclusive participation of vulnerable groups. Human Rights Approach gives a focus to rights of the people in concern including the most vulnerable members of the communities. The project will support targeted CSOs to increase their capacity to support their members, particularly youth and women including IDPs and returnees, to exercise their rights to education, livelihood and participation. The project will also provide funds to small projects for CSOs to implement their activities to support their communities. The project will the Karenni National Women Organization in organizing skill trainings to create livelihood opportunities for the vulnerable, particularly disadvantaged women and the Kayah State Youth Network in providing civic education to youth to increase their knowledge and skills in active participation in development of their communities. The overall goal is to support strong and active CSOs in contributing to diverse and active civil society in Kayah State. Therefore, capacity development trainings and mentoring, including the project design, is available for both targeted CSOs

SUSTAINABLE WATER SUPPLY AND C...APACITY BUILDING IN DEVCHULI MUNICIPALITY

|
Finnish water projects have su...pported the government of Nepal in developing decentralized community based water and sanitation approach and working modalities since 1990. Project in Devchuli Nepal is an extension to WaterFinns NAPA WASH project in Nepal in 2014-2016. There is great potential in developing the area to the next level in water quality and sanitation by capacity building in municipality and ward level trainings and minor construction to ensure the long term sustainability based on self-reliance of the communities. There is a need to increase understanding and awareness of sustainability of WASH services and facilities in user committees ward and municipality level. There is a clear demand for a continuation project after NAPA WASH, Devchuli area has basic level water and sanitation services however the quality of water and skill of maintaining WSP are not still sufficient and therefore causes health issues. The overall project objective is to improve the self-reliance of Devchuli communities to sustain their WASH services at acceptable good level to ensure safe drinking water and healthy hygienic environment for the whole community. This is done by applying tested Operation & Maintenance and Management practices new technologies and capacity building at the community ward and municipality level. The project is situated in Devchuli municipality in Nawalparasi Nepal. Devchuli has a population of 34912 with 6336 individual households which all are direct or indirect beneficiaries of the project. Project management is done by WaterFinns Finland with the local partner Center for Appropriate Technology Nepal (CATN) in Nepal in addition to the Devchuli municipality. Project?s beneficiaries are the users of WASH services in Devichuli Municipality. The project is designed also to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) especially of 5. Gender equality 6. Clean water and sanitation 10. Reduced inequalities and 13. Climate action. The project will integrate Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction measures in the WASH process e.g. the WSP aiming to minimize the impacts of weather induced disasters.

The unions participating in th...e project continue organizing forest workers, with the aim of getting 10?000 new members in four years. Occupational health and safety measures continue to reduce the number of accidents and injuries in forestry work. The unions advocate for legislation that influences interest representation of forestry workers, and participate in cooperation with environmental organizations to promote sustainable green jobs. The major problems of the forestry sector are unstable work relationships and dangerous working conditions. Awareness of rights, collective bargaining and union density have before the project been low, and before 2016 workers of the sector were not even officially recognized as workers. The project activities have brought around 20?000 new members to the unions, and close to 12?000 people have participated diverse types of trainings and advocacy work. Almost 2?000 people have through cooperatives gained additional income to supplement the forestry work, making use of other products of the forest, such as tree leave plates, mushrooms, berries and honey. The cooperation with environmental organizations, especially WWF, has reduced tensions between forestry workers and environmentalists by fitting together sustainable forestry and conservation, as well as nature tourism. This last project phase ensures the continuity and sustainability of the work done in the current target regions and through spreading the successful models of action to a few new districts. The project benefits Nepalese forestry workers and their families through improved income and safety, as well as the participating unions through strengthened membership base, negotiation position and cooperation in advocacy work. The main actors of the project are BWI NAC (Building and Wood Workers' International Nepal Affiliates Committee) as the coordinating cooperation body and its affiliates CAWUN (Construction and Allied Workers' Union in Nepal), CUPPEC (Central Union of Painters, Plumbers, Electro and Construction in Nepal) and ANCWU (All Nepal Construction Workers' Union) that implement the project in cooperation with WWF Nepal.

Poverty is the core problem of... the project areas and beneficiaries, resulting problems that include food insecurity and widespread malnutrition, illiteracy and lack of access to employment opportunities and inaccessibility to basic facilities such as water and sanitation. Most Dalits are deprived of their basic human rights such as citizenship and land-rights. Similarly most children are deprived even of primary education, and there are cases of high early drop-outs. Caste and gender based discriminations against women and socially excluded people still prevail thus depriving them of public service delivery such as income generating, health, education, and access to social security benefits. The project, that covers three districts, Morang, Sarlahi and Chitwan, aims to tackle these problems with the objective that the poor and excluded people are socially, economically and legally empowered.

more
|
The union density of food and ...beverage industry of the Philippines at 8 % is slightly higher than average 5 % level, but in order to promote growing interest representation power, the project targets the organizing to strategically important large workplaces and both permanent and contract labour. The following belong to the key sub-sectors: pineapple canneries, sugar processing, grain products manufacturing, fish products and beverage industry, and the most important companies and their working conditions were charted out in the baseline study. In addition to organizing, the project will allocate resources to basic rights training and to development of a systematic training program for the unions and their umbrella body, consisting of negotiation skills, occupational health and safety and grievance handling. Especially the position and participation of female and young workers will be emphasized, and campaigning organized for regularization of contract, agency and part-time workers.Due to the low union density and the weak knowledge and skills level the unions are currently weak and their interest representation capacity at a low level. The support will strengthen cooperation of unions from different backgrounds, with the long-term aim to create a sector level organization that has possibilities to negotiate sector-wide agreements for all the workers in the industry. As a result, income and job security of food and beverage industry workers improve, and the working environment will become safer and healthier. Those benefiting from the work are the approximately 600 000 food and beverage industry workers of the Philippines, their unions and their umbrella body. The contract partner is the national confederation SENTRO and the implementers are a group of unions affiliated to SENTRO, another national centre CFW and some independent company level ones. SENTRO's coordination and management capacity supports the work of the food and beverage industry unions and their council and LEARN helps to plan and implement the training package.

Rwanda's constitution guarante...es everyone equal treatment before the law, and the right to an attorney, but not legal assistance at public expense. Rwanda has since 2003 been reformed judiciary for example tightening the qualifications of the judges and increasing the autonomy of the judiciary in decision-making. Parallel to the Rwanda's national judicial system there has also been developed the community courts Abunzis, in response to the need to ensure better implementation of the legal remedies for the marginalized population groups. The equality of the access to justice lacking in Rwanda, government-guaranteed public legal aid services as well as Abunzis are difficult to reach and bureaucratic. In addition, the ongoing problems are caused by corruption, excessive processing and the high cost of judicial process. The main objective of the project is to contribute to most vulnerable groups access justice in Kamonyi and Ruhango by increasing the provision of legal aid by strengthening the activities of civil society and the judiciary officers. During the project, there will be provided legal advice to the very poorest and most vulnerable groups who suffer from violations of human rights (special focus on women, children and prisoners on remand). It is also intended to strengthen community mediation committees Abunzi fundamental and human rights capacity in a practical, earthy and concrete action-oriented human rights training. Activities are legal advice an...d assistance, advocacy and founding a co-ordination group. The project aims to promote the realization of human rights protection of the poorest and most marginalized sections of the population by improving access to justice, as well as increasing the awareness of the authorities on human rights and the rule of law. The project will focus the victims of violations of human rights of the poor and the marginalized (especially women, children, the disabled, minorities and indigenous members) to raise awareness and promote legal in Kigali. Inara Legal Aid Service (INALAS) is founded by self-employed lawyers in February 2009 in Kigali city. The central activities include capacitating the local CSOs and public administration turning the risky survival strategies of youth to healthy ones and 3) training youth to recognize local income generation opportunities instead of leaving the country. Developing countries? own economies have generated more jobs livelihood opportunities and well-being is the priority area of Finland's development policy the project is aimed at contributing to. Somalia is ranked as one of the bottom five countries in terms of gender inequality and therefore positive discrimination and affirmative measures will be taken to enhance the participation of young women and girls and to raise awareness about their particular needs. The project aims to reduce inequality by emphasizing the rights of all youth as full and equal members of the communities where they live. Project respects climate sustainability too.The project capacitates CSOs and public administration to work with private sector according to multi-stakeholder approach. Helsinki Deaconess Institute?s Vamos services is acknowledged in a national level as a unique concept to support vulnerable youth's access to education and employment. The same concept will be used together with cooperation partners Y-PEER in Hargeisa and Gedo Development in Gedo. The principal beneficiaries of the project are the youth (15-35 years) who have dropped out from education and employment.

F.a: Sustainabilize South Afri...can wine supply chain
more
|
This project aims to make Sout...h African wine sector more socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. The project improves capacity of workers' representatives to support mature systems of industrial relations on grape farms. The project will promote effective social dialogue among stakeholders who play key roles in influencing working conditions in the wine sector in South Africa. This is a joint-project with SASK. South African wine sector is suffering of fragmented trade unions, weak position of seasonal workers, companies' unwillingness to commit to decent work and small share of environmentally sustainable production. Common practice is to exploit labour from undocumented workers from Zimbabwe and Lesotho, who receive lower wages significantly violating minimum wage. This has also caused a lot of fighting and xenophobia, like tendencies among locals who are against employment of migrant workers. There is gross violation of occupational health and safety issues: exposure of farm workers to pesticides and lack of training on handling chemicals. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are common due to dop system adopted during the apartheid era, where alcohol was used as a form of payment to farm workers. The project works collaboratively, with value chain dialogue, to develop a strategy aimed at improving wages and closing the Living Wage gap, and to get healthy, motivated productive workforce for the sector. The project also seeks to increase organic wine production and reduce alcohol-related harm. The project will address sexual harassment and gender discrimination, as well as occupational health and safety hazards. The goal of the project is to improve workers' right to decent work in South Africa. The project's purpose is the improved status of workers in South African grape farms. The project is implemented by Fairtrade Africa in cooperation with SASK, Finnish Contact Service Union United - PAM and local trade unions. http://www.fairtradeafrica.net/

F.a: To promote the participat...ory rights and the right for the clean and healthy environment of the communities
more
|
The main objective of the proj...ect is to promote the right to participate in decision-making on the environment and health of the Kenyan coastal residents who have suffered the harms of the mining industry. The project also seeks to obtain information on matters related to the environment and health. Legal focus of the project is the right to health and a clean environment. The project may contributes to Kenya's coastal local communities' participation rights in decision-making concerning the environment and access to environmental information. In the short term, the project empowers local communities and residents, particularly the human rights and environment defenders trained in the project to promote more effectively the right to health and a clean environment. In the longer term, the project contributes to a better consideration of environmental and human rights on a larger scale, for example, when granting construction permits for new enterprises. The project target group is are communities suffering from miming industry in the Kenyan coastal counties in Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta. The beneficiaries are the communities who live closest to the mining industry and / or most affected by the environmental and health effects caused by extractive industries. Most of the beneficiaries are farmers, but there are also fishermen and factory workers. In particular, the project takes into account children and pregnant women, because they are most vulnerable for the harms caused by the the extractive industries. Indirect beneficiaries are the public authorities and non-state actors that influence on the environmental governance.Center for Justice, Governance and Environmental Action (CJGEA) was established in 2009 and was officially registered in 2012. It is a Community Based Organisations. The organization was founded with the aim to promote and protect the rights of local communities in a situation where companies started to gain ground in the exploitation of natural resources along the coast of Kenya. The organization aims mainly to promote the protection of the environment and the respect for human rights, for example by information work , litigation, advocacy and campaigning. Part of the strength of the association is strong ownership of the local communities in supporting the activities of the Organization.

UniWASH Phase II - Human Right...s Based WASH Innovations for Ugandan Children
more
|
This is a continuation phase o...f the UNICEF-Academia-Private Sector Partnership Project (UniWASH) 2014-2016 which has aimed to create an innovative human rights based partnership model to address WASH-related problems in rural Uganda. The overall long-term goal is to fulfill girls and boys right to water adequate sanitation and hygiene conditions in Uganda. Based on the MTR and consultations the partnership approach and focus have been revised to better support achievement of the results. In the first phase the partnership model was academia driven in which students invented in schools and local SMEs capacity was build and participation facilitated aiming to together new innovative solutions for the children. Based on the lessons learned the partnership model will be revised into multi-helix model that brings together government partners (decision and policy makers) development partners (UN agencies donors CSOs) academia and private sector. To goal is to build common understanding and trust among partners and strengthen the out of box thinking leading to strengthening of WASH innovation ecosystem in Uganda. In addition to innovation model will be turned into private sector driven allowing development of new market based solutions. Universities will support the SMEs and e.g. create new ideas concepts and carry out research and testing with the children. Phase II focus is on addressing structural WASH problems in order to achieve sustainable results together with the multi-helix partners. In addition regional cross-learning knowledge transfer and networking is enhanced in East Africa for scaling up innovations and enabling south-south learning. The project will continue building on good practices such as the human rights based approach and its integration to the innovation development process. Ensuring child friendly as well as meaningful participation of children is a core principle in the partnership.

F.a: Adult Education in Refuge...e Settlements and in Urban Kampala
more
|
In Uganda especially women fac...e disparity in economic participation and opportunities, health and survival, political empowerment and in education. This inequality is more complicated and deeper for refugees and especially refugee women. Family and community structures that provide necessary support have broken down, while traditional and social norms have disintegrated. Lack of literacy, numeracy and relevant language skills makes refugees daily life difficult especially in new environment as it hinders the access to information and to livelihood opportunities and limits the communication with authorities and local people.#Through acquisition and use of functional liteacy and language skills the adult especially women and youth refugees and Ugandans living nearby settlements will improve their self-reliance and resilience. This contributes to the improvement of the resilience of and social cohesion within and between the most vulnerable groups in protracted refugee crisis. The project provides adult literacy and English for adults trainings. The adult education trainings provided are functional and practise oriented in nature, hence help participants benefit immediately. Literacy and language skills also improve especially womens self-confidence and status in society, thus empowers women and refugees at large to take more active role in decision making at family and community levels. #The project participants are refugees in Uganda, largest nationality being South Sudanese followed by refugees from DRC, Burundi and Somalia. The general target group is refugees above 15 years old, who reside in settlements or urban Kampala area and their educational and skill level is in need of improvement. Specifically the uneducated refugee women and youth between 15 to 25 years old who have dropped out of school are targeted. Special attention will be paid to People with Disabilities and strategy to increase PWSs participation to the trainigs will be developed. Additionally project targets Ugandans living nearby settlements as they often live in similar conditions than refugees and have similar interest as the refugees their area is hosting. The project aims to reach 22,700 beneficiaries in the four-year period. The project is implemented by Finnish Refugee Council with the cooperation of refugee leaders and associations.

F.A: CORE FUNDING TO PROMOTE S...OCIAL AND ECONOMIC RIGHTS IN UGANDA

F.a: Core funding to promote s...ocial and economic rights in Uganda
more
|
This project consists of core ...support towards implementation of ISER's activities over three years as guided by its strategic plan for the period July 2018 – June 2022. The overall goal of the organisation for the next five years as articulated under the strategic plan is improving enjoyment of Economic and Social Rights (ESRs) by everyone regardless of social status with a focus on the most vulnerable groups including women, children, Persons With Disability (PWD) and older persons. ISER will build on previous successes and compliment ongoing efforts to create awareness for promotion and protection of ESRs in order for the right holders to demand these rights from duty bearers. ISER will also engage in advocacy at different levels to strengthen the legal protection and enforcement of ESRs by generating credible and consistent information on ESRs to influence policy, legislation and programs. This will extend to regulation of private actors to ensure they do not undermine ESRs. The extension to private actors stems from the background that as Uganda increasingly focuses on private sector led growth and Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to deliver key services like health and education, the state has not put in place adequate measures to regulate private providers and to ensure they do not detrimentally impact on the realisation of especially ESRs. ISER will engage in budget advocacy as well as analyse economic and fiscal policy through a human rights lens. Doing so will promote greater accountability, participation and responsiveness in fiscal policy and ensure greater resources for ESRs. ISER will be working towards strengthening citizen engagement for government accountability by creating platforms for dialogue between duty bearers and rights holders as well as building the capacity of community accountability structures to improve their effectiveness. Though participation is provided for as a right in Uganda's Constitution, ISER's research has found that there are few mechanisms to enable people to meaningfully participate and hold their leaders accountable for realisation of ESRs. ISER will also maintain the multi-layered advocacy strategy that covers local government, national, regional and international levels in order to maximise impact.

Widespread indifference toward... the rights of disabled people and a reluctance on behalf of the government to intervene is prevalent in Zimbabwe. Participation in society and the realization of human rights of disables people is challenging, and accessing services is difficult, which results in deterioration of the quality of life. Disabled people also fall into a poverty trap more easily than those in the mainstream. Livelihood opportunities and their attainment are limited. Disabled people also more easily become victims of violence, abuse, and discrimmination than those in the mainstream. Expected development outcomes: Improvement of the rights of disabled people to receive community services and to participate in community development projects and decision making in the areas of Matabeleland South, Masvingon, and Mahonaland East. As an outcome of the activities, the quality of life of disabled people is improved, health care and education is better attainable for them, and they have better livelihood opportunities. They also have better possibilities to develop themselves and participate in their own communities. The target group is disabled people. The project is implemented by Jairos Jiri Association.

The presence of arsenic in gro...undwater is a common problem affecting the quality of drinking water on the plateaus of Nepal. Using water containing arsenic as drinking water in cooking or irrigation may cause a plethora of health issues even cancer. In Nepal the work to reduce the levels of arsenic is fragmentary and lacking in cooperation and coordination between local officials. In addition knowledge about the health hazards of arsenic among the consumers of contaminated water is scarce. The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and the Finnish Environment Institute?s (SYKE) shared project will strengthen coordination the sharing of information and cooperation between agents in different fields who have for now worked in silos. The Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management (DWSSM) whose responsibility is water quality will implement the Project as a partner organization. The immediate goal of the Project is to improve the partner organization?s capacity to guide and support stakeholders in the field of water management to prevent and reduce the prevalence and use of water contaminated by arsenic. The goal for the first output area is to strengthen the knowledge-based instruction of the DWSSM on diminishing of the presence of arsenic. This is attainable by enhancing the flow of information between different stakeholders developing effective processes for the handling of information as well as increasing the understanding of how geological conditions affect the quality of the water in Nepal. The second output area focuses on the DWSSM?s ability to use and adapt geological and hydrogeological research regarding the arsenic problem in ground water as a base for decision making. The third output area is to improve their tracking of arsenic levels and the practices of analysis of the data. Tighter cooperation and interaction between the DWSSM and stakeholders is also one of the output areas of the project. During the project a public communications plan on the arsenic issue will be developed for the department.
