DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL VACCINE... FOR CONTAGIOUS CAPRINE PLEUROPNEUMONIA BASED ON A FAST-GROWING MYCOPLASMA FERIRUMINATORIS CHASSIS
more
|
Development of a novel vaccine... for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia based on a fast-growing Mycoplasma feriruminatoris chassis
more
|
Contagious caprine pleuropneum...onia (CCPP) is a severe respiratory disease of goats and sheep caused by the bacterium mycoplasma capricolum subsp capripneumoniae (Mccp). Clinical CCPP occurrence has been reported in 40 countries in Africa and Asia and mortality and morbidity can reach 70% and 100% respectively within 7-10 days. Goats and sheep are an important source of income for women and CCPP severely affects their ability to provide for their families. The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines estimates that every year, CCPP causes economic losses of up to USD$507 million (approximately CA$484 million) in endemic areas. Vaccination remains the most effective and affordable method to control CCPP, because antibiotic treatment does not eliminate the bacterium and sanitary measures are not feasible in smallholder settings. The current CCPP vaccine is safe but its protection is short-lived (less than one year). It is also expensive to produce because the bacterium grows slowly and results in low yields. The objective of this project is to develop a novel CCPP vaccine based on the fastest-growing mycoplasma species to date, mycoplasma feriruminatoris (M.feri). M. feri was isolated from wild goats and has a generation time of less than 30 minutes. M. feri genes encoding virulent factors will be deleted, creating space for insertion of Mccp genes that encode known and predicted vaccine candidate antigens. Goats will be vaccinated with the inactivated or live new recombinant vaccine, then experimentally infected with Mccp to determine whether the vaccine is protective. This project will use cutting-edge synthetic biology tools to construct a vaccine for CCPP that will grow efficiently, express protective Mccp antigens, and be used either as a live or inactivated vaccine. This 24-month project is a collaboration between the University of Bern in Switzerland, the Institut national de la recherche agronomique at the University of Bordeaux, France, and the J. Craig Venter Institute in the USA.

West African Research and Trai...ning Hub on Environmental and Occupational Health in the Informal Economy
more
|
This project will help establi...sh a West African Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEO Health) Hub in environmental and occupational health. It will aim to enhance regional capacity and leadership for world-class research, training, and innovation to address national and regional health priorities. The hub will also inform policy development. Hazards in the informal economy Sub-Saharan Africa's informal economy contributes over half of the region's gross domestic product and supports 80% of the workforce. In West Africa, nine in 10 workers have informal jobs in economic activities related to agriculture, mining, transport, trade, and commerce. Many are regularly exposed to multiple environmental and occupational health hazards. There is little research or documentation related to the associated health risks and disease burdens, as well as a lack of scientific evidence to guide prevention and mitigation. To improve opportunities for better livelihoods in this vast economic sector, fast and sustained improvement in health and safety is critical. Research and training hub for West Africa This project will establish the hub under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The hub leverages existing strengths across Francophone and Anglophone countries. It is founded on a long-standing partnership between the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. It brings together a group of African and Canadian institutions, including: -Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -Ghana's Ministry of Health -McGill University -Ecohealth Community of Practice for West and Central Africa (spanning Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal) -University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Environmental and occupational health research The hub will enhance regional capacity for world-class research in environmental and occupational health in the informal sector. It will also build African leadership to guide national and regional policies for reducing environmental and occupational health hazards. The initial research focuses on documenting and reducing health threats associated with processing electronic waste (e-waste), small-scale gold mining, and air pollution impacts from the informal transport sector. All three economic activities produce significant levels of environmental contamination and pose elevated health risks to highly vulnerable workers in the informal sectors and their families.

Strengthening CRVS systems thr...ough technical assistance and targeted capacity building programs within the African region
more
|
A well-functioning and reliabl...e civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system records and certifies vital events such as births, marriages, adoptions, divorces, and deaths. It also establishes the legal identity of individuals, records family relationships, and facilitates access to rights and privileges such as education, health, social protection, inheritance, and voting. This project seeks to provide direct technical support to select African countries by strengthening the current strategic role and financial capacity of the Africa Program for Accelerated Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (APAI-CRVS) Secretariat, in addition to carrying out vital management and capacity-strengthening programs. Gender dimensions in CRVS systems will be integrated throughout these activities to strengthen the capacity for gender-responsive CRVS systems in Africa. A new system management approach, the CRVS Improvement Framework, will be introduced to train government experts on how to use business process mapping, improvement, and re-engineering to strengthen their CRVS systems. The Framework manual will be validated by an expert group led by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). A consultant will be placed at UNECA to support select Global Financing Facility (GFF) countries to build and maintain strong CRVS systems. The consultant will also provide support to the validation and piloting of the CRVS Improvement Framework. This will help the Centre of Excellence for CRVS systems meet its mandate and also help with the institutionalization of technical assistance for GFF countries within UNECA. The project will also support a series of workshops for Africa's Registrars-General to strengthen their knowledge and capacity of how to lead process improvement initiatives. These workshops will create valuable platforms for strategic planning, networking, and best practice exchange. This project is part of the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems (CoE-CRVS), housed at IDRC. The CoE-CRVS aims to explore new ways of addressing the poor state of CRVS systems in developing countries through research, development of knowledge products, capacity building, and providing direct technical assistance to selected countries.

more
|
This project aims to improve f...ood security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. This project also addresses the root challenges that farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity. Project activities include: (1) facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders, through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing, (2) facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (for example, non-governmental organizations and governments) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry, and (3) supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards. This project expects to reach 3 million farmers linking them to profitable markets, 10 million households consuming marketable beans, and 10% of SME entrepreneurs trading value-added bean products, and the project targets 3 million tons of improved bean products to be traded in targeted corridors.

more
|
This project aims to improve g...overnment accountability in South Sudan through strengthened capacity of the media to report on issues of importance to South Sudanese citizens. Through a mentoring approach, Journalists for Human Rights trains South Sudanese journalists to report on issues of service delivery, such as education, health and governance, using an approach that includes participatory reporting, non-discriminatory language, and how to put a human face on the issues. Training is based in local media houses so that capacity built through the project benefits local media directly. Media managers are also provided with increased capacity to run and manage their own organizations. The project works with representatives of the Government of South Sudan and civil society to facilitate increased understanding of the role of media in democracy and governance.

Harnessing big data to meet th...e Sustainable Development Goals – Building capacity in the Global South
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data, often called big data, promise to improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Furthermore, declining prices and improved functionality have democratized data usage, and open-source tools have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in capturing and analyzing these data sets for public purposes — big data for development (BD4D) — is still relatively new, but it accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, much of the BD4D research is coming from Northern institutions and private sector companies, resulting in a Northern-driven, male-oriented agenda, rather than one driven by Southern voices and Global South collaboration. To meet this challenge, this project will develop capacity among researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to measuring progress on the SDGs and to gender-related issues. It is being implemented by LIRNEasia, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional – CIPEI. Over a two-year period, a global network will work on applied big data for development innovations, including big data analyses and capacity building in close collaboration with private sector companies and policymakers. The network will also develop a critical perspective on issues related to big data and marginalization, privacy, security, rights, ethics and competition. Combining globally coordinated research efforts and regional hubs, the network will embed the findings of the project into Southern-led processes, and represent Southern voices in global policy discussions.

This project supports the Worl...d Food Programme's (WFP) school feeding program. Over the past four decades, WFP has become the world's foremost provider of school meals to poor children. In addition to providing free midday meals, WFP provides students with take-home rations for the family, which encourages parents to send their boys and girls to class. School feeding initiatives target the most food-insecure areas of countries with low school enrolment, irregular school attendance, and high primary school drop-out rates. GAC's support to WFP's school meal program is used to purchase, deliver and distribute nutritious food primarily to school children, particularly girls. School feeding is a means of increasing enrolment and attendance rates, decreasing drop-out rates, and improving children's concentration, learning and academic performance.

This initiative implemented th...rough WFP Tanzania seeks to temporarily expand the national safety net to support vulnerable women and men in urban areas across 10 regions by (i)launching a short-term humanitarian intervention in the form of cash transfers to 485,000 food insecure people residing in the poor urban districts of Tanzania in 10 regions identified by the Government as being at highest risk of negative impact by COVID-19 and (ii)Conduct Food Security Monitoring using a Mobile Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping (mVAM) tool in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar in order to support decision making in designing safety net programmes for the most vulnerable populations and ensure that effective interventions are implemented for those in need. The main objective of the cash transfer is to ensure that men and women urban dwellers do not fall into severe food insecurity in the near term (the first two months), and can recover their livelihoods in the medium term (the following two months). With this in mind, value of the transfer for the first two months of assistance will be sufficient to obtain 100 percent of required daily calories (currently estimated as 30,000 Tanzanian Shillings / 17.5 Canadian dollars), the value for the following two months, aiming to support early recovery, will be 50 percent daily required calories. Cash transfers will be made, to the extent possible, using contactless methods (mainly mobile money, use of which is widespread in urban areas) on a monthly basis. Cash transfers will be activated based on food security levels that will be continuously monitored using mVAM and upon approval from the Government. Overall, this initiative will contribute to the following strategic outcomes which are part of the Tanzania's WFP Corporate Strategic Plan (2017-2021)(i) Refugees and other accurately food insecure people in Tanzania are able to meet their basic food and nutritional requirements in times of crisis and, (ii) Disaster management and social protection systems in Tanzania reliably address the basic food and nutrition needs of the poorest and most food-insecure populations throughout the year, including in times of crisis. / Pending

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers.

This project will not only ana...lyze how young people are affected by COVID-19, it will examine how they can be key actors in the response, mitigation, and evaluation efforts of pandemic policies and actions. It aims to ensure that emerging policies are responsive and promote inclusive governance and accountability by seeking to investigate how social accountability can be factored into COVID-19 responses in three member states (Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional bloc of eight member states in the Horn of Africa. The project focuses on enabling youth-driven documentation of reliable, contextually grounded local data analysis and rapid feedback to local and national authorities and to communities through the development of a citizen-led performance monitoring framework. The focus is on informing policies and decision-making to mitigate the social and economic impacts of COVID-19 and prevent its re-emergence. This project will support youth-led policy influence and encourage the use of research evidence to improve community responses to impacts of COVID-19 and build resilience. By providing rapid support to ongoing work, innovating new ways of learning and sharing, and enhancing capacities to inform current and future policy and practice solutions, the project aims to strengthen the overall governance of the COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath. Ultimately, the project seeks to contribute towards strengthening the social contract and fostering democratic peace in pandemic and post-crisis responses.

This project supports 2,905 vo...lunteer placements, and aims to improve the economic and/or social wellbeing of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, with a view to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to increasing the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues, this project aims to increase the performance of developing country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative, and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. This project also works to deliver capacity building through volunteer advisors who act as mentors, advisors or coaches, and become catalysts for partners in the agriculture and tourism sectors of the project countries to realize their full potential. Project activities include: (1) providing technical assistance in strategic planning and leadership to promote innovative practices that advance inclusiveness, gender equality, and women''s economic empowerment, (2) providing technical assistance in production, operations, quality control, financial procedures, human resources management procedures, customer service, and marketing to promote gender equality and women''s economic empowerment, (3) providing technical assistance to create and/or improve gender-sensitive processes, policies, tools and practices, (4) delivering events and campaigns to inform Canadians about international development issues and opportunities to get involved with these issues, and (5) establishing a fund for partners to procure equipment and supplies necessary to implement an innovation meant to accelerate results through improved productivity, efficiency, sales and income for marginalized and vulnerable groups, particularly women. In response to the COVID-19 cr...isis, HarvestPlus has taken multiple measures to ensure that beneficiaries continue to receive the nutrition, health, and livelihood benefits of biofortified crops. HarvestPlus is proposing a program to expand access to biofortified foods, especially for the most vulnerable populations who have the greatest need for nutrition and health in these times and for whom nutritious foods, rich in zinc, vitamin A and iron will act as a first line of defense in against viruses and diseases. The project will be an 18-month $3-million COVID-19 emergency response in 6 countries, including Bangladesh, DRC, Pakistan, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The ultimate outcome is to protect the food security and livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations impacted by COVID-19 in six countries through rapidly increasing the production and consumption of biofortified staple crops by vulnerable smallholder farming households. Expected results include: 1. To increase access to affordable biofortified seed by vulnerable farming households. 2. To increase access to markets for smallholder farming household and rural/semi-urban SMEs along the value chains to biofortified seed, crops/grain, and food. 3. To strengthen the capacity of and economic returns to SMEs along the crop value chains by providing them with a stimulus package to enable them switch to biofortified products to assists them to respond better to shocks (such as COVID-19 induced disruptions). / In response to the COVID-19 crisis, HarvestPlus has taken multiple measures to ensure that beneficiaries continue to receive the nutrition, health, and livelihood benefits of biofortified crops.
