REGIONAL MALARIA ELIMINATION
|
Regional Malaria Elimination
|
Funding under this investment ...includes Australia's support for the Communicable Disease Threats Initiative, incorporating the Asia Pacific Leaders' Malaria Alliance limited (APLMA). APLMA has the mandate of East Asia Summit plus malaria-endemic Pacific Leaders to operationalize the APLMA Regional Malaria Elimination Roadmap. The six priority areas under the APLMA Regional Malaria Elimination Roadmap are: unite national efforts and regional actions; map, prevent, test and treat the disease, everywhere; ensure high quality malaria services, including tests, medicines, nets and insecticides; improve targeting and efficiency to maximise impact; mobilise domestic financing, leverage external support; and innovate for elimination. The ultimate goal of this work is the achievement of the regional malaria elimination goal by 2030, as agreed by EAS plus malaria-endemic Pacific Leaders in 2014. Australia will support APLMA for the first three years of its operations, as it advances work in the six priority areas of the Roadmap, and works with governments in our region to fund and implement fully their National Malaria Elimination Strategies. APLMA is also supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The total value of Australia's contribution is $8.0 million over 3 years, starting 2016-17.

This initiative aims to assist... the most affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa to improve access to diagnosis and treatment for the major causes of death in children under five years of age: malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea. The project builds on the World Health Organization's (WHO) experience in strengthening community case management of malaria (CCM), and focuses on integrated community case management (iCCM) of pneumonia and diarrhea. This approach helps to ensure that children have access to treatment for all three diseases. The program also aims to generate evidence to inform WHO policy recommendations and guidance on CCM and iCCM. Activities include: training of community health workers; developing supervision and training structures; procuring and distributing supplies and commodities; developing norms, standards and guidance to diagnose and treat leading diseases affecting children under five; as well as disseminating and incorporating CCM and iCCM guidelines and policies into national health care policies. The project is being implemented in five countries in sub-Saharan Africa: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Malawi, Niger and Nigeria. The project aims to reduce mat...ernal, infant and child mortality in 50 marginalized villages in the north Kintampo and south Bole districts of Ghana by directly addressing key health issues. Reaching approximately 10,000 beneficiaries, the project addresses care during pregnancy and childbirth, neonatal care, and malaria control as critical health concerns in these communities. Key project components include establishing a prenatal and neonatal home visit system for pregnant women and infants, and launching a malaria control program that prioritizes mothers and infants. Specific activities include: distributing neonatal care kits; training community-based volunteers and local health professionals; providing mosquito nets for all village residents; conducting malaria control workshops; and supplying local clinics with rapid malaria test kits. Ghana Rural Integrated Development is working in partnership with the Northern Empowerment Association to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum CIDA contribution to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes.

Lake Naivasha Sustainability :... Ecosystem Improvement for Health and Wellbeing
more
|
Lake Naivasha basin located in... the Great Rift Valley in Kenya is the site of increasing economic activity, especially floriculture. The floriculture industry provides economic benefits but increases the demand on ecosystem services. The industry and associated settlements depend on lake water for geothermal energy, household water supplies, irrigation, discharge and fishing. At the same time, the basin is being affected by climate change. This project seeks to obtain a better understanding of watershed hydrology, chemical pollution and health conditions among residents and floriculture workers, including those related to chemical exposure and other environmental hazards. The overall goal is to make recommendations for the sustainable management of natural resources in the basin to the benefit of both ecosystem and human health and wellbeing.

This project seeks to save the... lives of women, newborns and children in Kenya and Liberia. The Canadian Red Cross Society and its partners in Kenya and Liberia work with the Ministries of Health in those countries to deliver a program in Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM), an approach to improve the health of pregnant women, newborns and children in 44 hard-to access rural communities. The project expects to reach 66,000 beneficiaries, including 12,000 children under five years old and 26,000 women of childbearing age in West Pokot District in Kenya and Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia. Ministry of Health-supervised community health workers and volunteers are selected by Community Health Committees and trained in community based health and first aid, in order to treat and refer sick children, and ensure community-level access to life-saving medications and basic health services.

The project aims to decrease i...llness and death among mothers, newborns and children under-five in the regions of Sikasso and Koulikoro. It is designed to strengthen life-saving interventions and services to better address critical childhood illnesses, including malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia. Reaching around 875,000 beneficiaries (150,000 children under the age of five), the project uses a community-based approach to deliver proven, high-impact, cost-effective interventions, with a complementary focus on improved community capacity to prevent illness, and provide access to services for mothers, newborns and children. Activities include: community-based health and first aid training; radio broadcasts on illness symptoms and treatment; and establishment or reinforcement of village health committees to support volunteers and community health workers and liaise with various decision makers. The Canadian Red Cross is working with the Croix-Rouge Malienne to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.

This contribution to Mozambiqu...e's health sector common fund (known in Portuguese as Prosaude) helps the Government of Mozambique achieve the goals and objectives of its Health Sector Strategic Plan and Integrated Plan to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5 (Reduction of child mortality and Improvement of maternal health). CIDA is contributing to the improvement of delivery and management of the National Health Service in order to provide integrated local health services to mothers and children where they live. Through this project, CIDA works in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Mozambique on building effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing coordination and harmonization among donors; and reinforcing mutual accountability. Sector support projects such as this one also help foster greater policy dialogue between CIDA, government, and partners, which helps to reinforce efforts for effective, focused aid and long-term development results. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of this project is undertaken in coordination with other donors. The project aims to achieve nation-wide progress in the health sector as well as improvements in the Government's ability to manage and administer its health sector, thereby ensuring that the Government of Mozambique can maintain the progress achieved through this project. Expected results from Prosaude include: 17% increase in the number of women delivering in health institutions, 36% increase in the number of children less than one year old with full immunization, 11% increase in the number of women receiving at least two doses of preventive malaria treatment during prenatal visits, and antiretroviral medication distributed to 38,057 children and 94,151 pregnant women. Project activities also include: construction and/or upgrade of 40 health centres, installation of 450 water points at health centres, construction, expansion or rehabilitation of 250 maternity rooms at health centres, 98% of health units using integrated management of childhood diseases, and training for an additional 1700 health workers. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.

Malaria remains the single mos...t important contributor to morbidity and mortality in developing countries. There have been many attempts to control malaria in sub-Saharan Africa through health sector interventions (case diagnosis, management and prevention), vector control (larvicide, insecticide and environmentally based mosquito control), reduction of human-vector contact (bednets) and public education. These initiatives have been effective in several regions of Asia, southern Europe and Latin America, but less so in Africa. This is attributed to the extent of malaria prevalence on the continent, the efficiency of the vector (primarily Anopheles funestus and A. arabiensis), and highly variable social, environmental and economic determinants of the disease. It is increasingly recognized that effective solutions to the problem will require a combination of tools. The Integrated Program on Malaria in sub-Saharan Africa (IPMA) will offer a shared and synergistic approach to existing malaria control programs. It will do so by supporting research aimed at understanding the complex societal and environmental dynamics affecting malaria in the region, and testing interventions that respond to both specific local factors and large-scale forces. The project is expected to result in a network of researchers and research projects on malaria, livelihoods and ecosystems in rural sub-Saharan Africa.

The project aims to improve ma...ternal and child health in the Kayonza, Mpungu and Kanyantorogo subcounties. Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group has partnered with Bwindi Community Hospital to reach an estimated 55,000 people living in remote villages, with an emphasis on children under age five and women of childbearing age. The hospital team trains village health providers and community leaders to mobilize the community, monitor children and expectant mothers, and serve as points of referral to the hospital. The team distributes insecticide-treated mosquito nets and oral rehydration salts for treatment of diarrhea, and educates community members about preventing and treating common maternal and childhood illness through school visits, radio broadcasts and information sessions.
