WHO supports countries who do ...not receive support from Gavi to boost populations' long term immunity to polio through the withdrawal of Oral Polio Vaccines (OPV) and the introduction of injectable Inactivated Polio Vaccines (IPV). These are critical components of the Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan (2013-2018). Non-Gavi countries who are eligible to introduce IPV will apply to WHO for a one-time grant to cost-share vaccine introduction, as a means of strengthening national routine immunization programs. WHO will coordinate with UNICEF to procure the required IPV vaccines and provide countries with technical support to deliver, store and track vaccines, thereby helping to increase immunization coverage and reduce preventable child mortality. This project directly supports the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's (GPEI) Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan goal of achieving polio eradication by 2018. This project contributes to Canada's $250 million commitment made to the GPEI at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Vaccine Summit for support to the GPEI Endgame Strategy (2013- 2018), and complements the efforts of Gavi to introduce IPV. / L'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) aide des pays qui ne reçoivent pas de soutien de l'Alliance GAVI à renforcer l'immunité à long terme de leurs populations contre la poliomyélite grâce au retrait du vaccin antipoliomyélitique oral et au lancement du vaccin antipoliomyélitique inactivé injectable. Il s'agit de deux éléments essentiels du Plan stratégique pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite et la phase finale 2013-2018. Les pays qui ne reçoivent pas de soutien de l'Alliance GAVI mais qui peuvent bénéficier du vaccin antipoliomyélitique inactivé feront une demande de subvention unique à l'OMS pour partager les couts liés au lancement du vaccin, qui permettra de renforcer les programmes nationaux d'immunisation systématique. L'OMS coordonnera ses activités avec celles de l'UNICEF pour acheter les vaccins antipoliomyélitiques inactivés nécessaires et offrir aux pays un soutien technique nécessaire à la livraison, au stockage et au suivi des vaccins, ce qui permettra d'accroitre la couverture vaccinale et de réduire le taux des décès évitables chez les enfants. Ce projet appuie directement l'objectif du Plan stratégique pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite et la phase finale de l'Initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite (IMEP), qui est d'éradiquer cette maladie d'ici 2018. Il contribue à l'engagement de 250 millions de dollars que le Canada a pris à l'égard de l'IMEP au Sommet sur les vaccins, qui s'est tenu en 2013 à Abou Dhabi, en appui au Plan stratégique et à la phase finale 2013-2018 de l'IMEP, et il complète les travaux accomplis par l'Alliance GAVI pour lancer le vaccin antipoliomyélitique inactivé.

Through this project, GAC will... support the implementation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)'s Endgame Strategic Plan for 2013-2019, which provides a global roadmap to eradicate polio by 2019. Specifically, the project will contribute to achieving: 1) increased capacity of targeted national governments to detect and interrupt poliovirus transmission and more rapidly respond to new outbreaks; 2) strengthened national immunization systems and withdrawal of oral polio vaccines, particularly, particularly in endemic countries; 3) certification and containment of polio viruses by 2019; and 4) strengthened national health systems through mainstreaming polio assets and infrastructure into broader health programs. Activities will include working with targeted governments to strengthen oral polio vaccine and inactivated polio vaccine campaign safety and quality, preparing country offices for improved outbreak responses, providing technical assistance to front-line workers, engaging communities with a new communication strategy to identify and reach missed children, and work with governments to transition polio assets and infrastructure to broader health goals. Annual amounts fundraised by the Rotary Foundation of Canada will be matched by DFATD on a 2:1 ratio, up to a maximum of $12 million. The Rotary Foundation of Canada is a chapter of Rotary International, one of the GPEI's core partners. The GPEI is a partnership between UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project aims to reduce the... incidence of child and maternal mortality in targeted countries through maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE). Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a deadly disease that affects women and children in developing countries. When women give birth in unhygienic circumstances, both mother and baby are at risk of contracting tetanus if they are not protected by vaccination.With Canada's support, UNICEF Canada is providing tetanus vaccine to at least 3,401,448 women of reproductive age and their future newborns in Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, Kenya and South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) distributing vaccines and supplies for supplemental immunization activities; (2) strengthening of the cold chain to transport vaccines and supplies; (3) promoting clean delivery practices, routine immunization and antenatal care; (4) developing and implementing national plans of action, training and support for health workers; and (5) strengthening surveillance of MNTE to monitor and evaluate progress./ Le projet vise à réduire le nombre de cas de mortalité d'enfants et de mères dans les pays ciblés grâce à l'élimination du tétanos chez les mères et les nouveau-nés. Cette maladie mortelle touche les femmes et les enfants dans les pays en développement. The purpose of the project is ...to help to reduce maternal, infant and child mortality by implementing an effective immunization program. This program is based on strengthening the cold chain thanks to solar-powered equipment. Project activities include: (1) equipping health centres with solar refrigerators to allow the preservation and distribution of vaccines and drugs; (2) training workers to install and maintain solar-powered equipment and to manage vaccines and biomedical waste; (3) equipping health centres with essential drugs and materials to provide emergency neonatal and obstetric care; and (4) training service providers in childhood diseases and emergency care. This project aims to improve the health status of women and children living in the targeted regions. / Le projet a pour but de contribuer à réduire la mortalité maternelle, infantile et juvénile par la mise en place d'un programme d'immunisation efficace. Ce programme repose sur la réhabilitation de la chaine du froid grâce à des équipements à l'énergie solaire. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) équiper les centres de santé de réfrigérateurs solaires afin de permettre la conservation et la distribution des vaccins et des médicaments; 2) former des intervenants sur l'installation et l'entretien des équipements à l'énergie solaire ainsi que sur la gestion des vaccins et des déchets biomédicaux; 3) équiper les centres de médicaments et matériels essentiels pour fournir des soins néonatals et obstétricaux d'urgence; 4) former les prestataires de services sur les maladies infantiles et les soins d'urgence. Through this project, GAC will... support the implementation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)'s Endgame Strategic Plan for 2013-2019, which provides a global roadmap to eradicate polio by 2019. Specifically, the project will contribute to achieving: 1) increased capacity of targeted national governments to detect and interrupt poliovirus transmission and more rapidly respond to new outbreaks; 2) strengthened national immunization systems and withdrawal of oral polio vaccines, particularly, particularly in endemic countries; 3) certification and containment of polio viruses by 2019; and 4) strengthened national health systems through mainstreaming polio assets and infrastructure into broader health programs. Activities will include working with targeted governments to strengthen oral polio vaccine and inactivated polio vaccine campaign safety and quality, preparing country offices for improved outbreak responses, providing technical assistance to front-line workers, engaging communities with a new communication strategy to identify and reach missed children, and work with governments to transition polio assets and infrastructure to broader health goals. Annual amounts fundraised by the Rotary Foundation of Canada will be matched by DFATD on a 2:1 ratio, up to a maximum of $12 million. The Rotary Foundation of Canada is a chapter of Rotary International, one of the GPEI's core partners. The GPEI is a partnership between UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This project contributes to Canada's $250 million commitment to polio eradication made at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Global Vaccine Summit. / Ce projet appuiera la mise en oeuvre du Plan stratégique 2013-2019 de l'Initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite (IMEP), qui fournit une feuille de route mondiale pour éradiquer la polio d'ici 2019. The goal of this project is to... reduce illness and deaths among children due to vaccine-preventable diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean by focussing on municipalities with vaccine coverage under 95%. The project aims to increase vaccination coverage with quality supplies and surveillance by strengthening the Regional Expanded Program on Immunization in ways that protect the achievements to date and meet new challenges in immunization programming. This project supports basic routine immunization programming through the Canadian International Immunization Initiative (CIII), which CIDA has funded since 1998. The CIII has supported three phases of the Pan American Health Organization's (PAHO) Immunization in the Americas program, which aims to help countries in the Americas strengthen their routine national immunization programs. The PAHO program focuses on: improving the quality of vaccines and syringes used in national immunization programs; supporting innovative approaches to improving immunization uptake among hard-to-reach groups; strengthening laboratory capacity for the diagnosis of vaccine-preventable childhood diseases; and developing surveillance systems for the detection and management of vaccine-preventable diseases. / Ce projet vise à réduire l'incidence des maladies et des décès chez les enfants provoqués par une contagion évitable au moyen de vaccins. Il vise à accroitre le taux de couverture vaccinale dans les collectivités d'Amérique latine et des Caraibes où ce taux est inférieur à 95 %, en favorisant le recours à du matériel de qualité et à des mesures de surveillance efficaces pour renforcer le programme régional d'immunisation, et ce, de manière à maintenir les progrès accomplis à ce jour et à relever les nouveaux défis à l'égard des programmes de vaccination. Le projet appuie la programmation sur l'immunisation systématique par le biais de l'Initiative canadienne d'immunisation internationale (ICII), financée par l'ACDI depuis 1998. L'ICII a soutenu trois phases du programme d'immunisation dans les pays de la région des Amériques, dirigé par l'Organisation panaméricaine de la Santé (OPS), qui aide les pays à renforcer leurs programmes nationaux de vaccination systématique. Ce programme de l'OPS vise les objectifs suivants : utiliser des vaccins et des seringues de meilleure qualité dans le cadre des programmes de vaccination nationaux; appuyer les approches innovatrices pouvant augmenter le taux de couverture vaccinale au sein des groupes les plus difficiles à joindre; renforcer la capacité des laboratoires assurant le diagnostic des maladies infantiles évitables grâce à la vaccination; et mettre sur pied des systèmes de surveillance pour assurer la détection et la gestion de ces maladies.

The project ultimately seeks to eradicate polio in Nigeria.Project activities include: (1) develop village-level micro-plans (vaccination plans detailed down to the household level) to immunize every child against polio (approximately 6.6 million girls and 6.9 million boys); (2) provide training for, and support deployment of, 154,000 vaccination team members (male and female); (3) conduct training for up to 8000 health workers to improve capacity for routine immunization; and (4) conduct intensified routine immunization activities to protect up to 250,000 children from vaccine preventable diseases./Le projet a pour but de renforcer le système de vaccination de routine au Nigéria et d'augmenter à l'échelle communautaire l'immunité face à la poliomyélite. This project aims to maintain ...the gains made towards polio eradication in Nigeria while strengthening the routine immunization system. The project ultimately seeks to eradicate polio in Nigeria.Project activities include: (1) develop village-level micro-plans (vaccination plans detailed down to the household level) to immunize every child against polio (approximately 6.6 million girls and 6.9 million boys); (2) provide training for, and support deployment of, 154,000 vaccination team members (male and female); (3) conduct training for up to 8000 health workers to improve capacity for routine immunization; and (4) conduct intensified routine immunization activities to protect up to 250,000 children from vaccine preventable diseases./Le projet a pour but de renforcer le système de vaccination de routine au Nigéria et d'augmenter à l'échelle communautaire l'immunité face à la poliomyélite. The overall goal of this proje...ct is to stop the spread of polio virus in Pakistan, where the vast majority of the remaining cases of polio occur. It is implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which, along with the Government of Pakistan and the World Health Organization, spearheads the Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative.This initiative supports UNICEF's activities in communities at risk of contracting polio across Pakistan. The project activities increase the community acceptance of polio vaccination team workers, through local language media campaigns, health information packages, and support to community level workers who engage community members on public health. These activities focus on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and the neighboring Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). In communities in these areas at highest risk for polio, the initiative hires community vaccinators who work in their own communities to vaccinate children and promote health. This innovative approach is referred to as Continuous Community Protected Vaccination (CCPV)./ L'objectif principale de ce projet est de mettre fin à la propagation du virus de la poliomyélite au Pakistan, où surviennent la grande majorité des cas de polio. Il est mis en œuvre par le Fonds des Nations Unies pour l'enfance (UNICEF), qui, avec le gouvernement du Pakistan et avec l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, mène l'initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite au Pakistan.Cette initiative soutient les activités de l'UNICEF dans les collectivités à risque d'attraper la poliomyélite au Pakistan. Les activités du projet visent à accroître l'accueil par les communautés des agents de l'équipe de vaccination contre la polio, au moyen de campagnes médiatiques qui diffusent en langue locale et de trousses d'information sur la santé. Elles visent également à accroître le soutien offert aux agents de santé qui travaillent dans les collectivités, pour sensibiliser les membres aux questions de santé publique. Ces activités sont concentrées sur certaines régions particulières, comme la province de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) et les régions tribales avoisinantes administrées par les autorités fédérales (FATA). Dans les collectivités situées dans les zones les plus vulnérables à la polio, les responsables de cette initiative embauchent également des vaccinateurs qui travaillent au sein de leurs propres collectivités pour vacciner les enfants et y faire la promotion de la santé. Cette approche innovatrice est appelée: « L'approche de Vaccination protégée en continu dans la communauté ».

It is implemented by the World Health Organization, which, along with the Government of Pakistan and UNICEF, spearheads the Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative.This initiative works across Pakistan to improve detection and tracking of polio, improve monitoring of all polio eradication activities and enhance vaccination checkpoints, which vaccinate people travelling between districts, provinces and at international boundaries. In addition to national level efforts, the project works in Balochistan and Sindh provinces to scale up an innovative approach called Continuous Community Protected Vaccination, which hires community vaccinators living in areas at high risk of contracting polio to vaccinate children and identify those missed by immunization drives./ L'objectif global de ce projet est de mettre fin à la propagation du virus de la poliomyélite au Pakistan, où survient la grande majorité des cas de polio. Il est mis en œuvre par l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, qui, en partenariat avec le gouvernement du Pakistan et l'UNICEF, mène l'initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la polio au Pakistan.Cette initiative œuvre dans l'ensemble du Pakistan en vue d'améliorer le dépistage et le suivi de la poliomyélite, d'améliorer la surveillance de toutes les activités d'éradication de cette maladie et d'augmenter les sites de contrôle de vaccination des populations qui voyagent entre les districts, les provinces et qui traversent les frontières internationales. This project supports the impl...ementation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)'s Endgame Strategic Plan, which provides a global roadmap to eradicate polio by 2019. Project activities include: (1) working with targeted governments to strengthen oral polio vaccine campaign safety and quality and introduce inactivated polio vaccine into routine immunization systems; (2) providing technical assistance to front-line workers to increase immunization coverage; and (3) working with governments to transition polio assets and infrastructure to broader health goals and national health systems.The GPEI is a partnership between UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This project contributes to Canada's $250 million commitment to polio eradication made at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Global Vaccine Summit./ Ce projet appuie la mise en œuvre du Plan stratégique et la phase finale de l'Initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite (IMEP), lequel offre une feuille de route pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite d'ici 2019. Les activités du projet comprennent les suivantes : 1) travailler avec les gouvernements ciblés pour renforcer la sécurité et la qualité de la campagne sur le vaccin antipoliomyélitique oral et introduire le vaccin antipoliomyélitique inactivé dans les programmes d'immunisation systématique; 2) fournir de l'aide technique aux travailleurs de première ligne pour augmenter le taux de couverture vaccinale; 3) travailler avec les gouvernements pour transmettre les actifs et l'infrastructure utilisés pour éradiquer la poliomyélite afin d'atteindre des buts plus larges en matière de santé et de renforcer les systèmes de santé nationaux.L'IMEP consiste en un partenariat entre l'UNICEF, l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, le Centre for Disease Control and Prevention des États-Unis, Rotary International et la Fondation Bill et Melinda Gates. This project aims to address g...aps in immunization coverage and equity in Francophone countries of Africa which have some of the lowest immunization rates in the world. To do so, the project is scaling-up proven private sector innovations. It utilizes Gavi's INFUSE platform (Innovation for Uptake, Scale and Equity in Immunization), which provides a space for selected innovators to present proven innovations that address bottlenecks and gender barriers in immunization systems in the poorest countries.The project seeks to leverage the INFUSE platform to target high-impact innovations from among the INFUSE innovators (pacesetters). Some key activities include: (1) providing support and business coaching, including oversight and assistance for partnership development to INFUSE pacesetters; (2) providing assistance to INFUSE pacesetters to develop a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework; and (3) engaging current and prospective Gavi donors in developing programs and strategies that strengthen the role of innovations in immunization delivery, coverage and equity./Ce projet vise à remédier aux lacunes dans la couverture et l'équité vaccinale dans les pays d'Afrique faisant partie de la Francophonie qui ont des taux d'immunisation parmi les plus bas au monde. Pour ce faire, le projet met à l'échelle des innovations éprouvées du secteur privé. Il a recours à la plateforme INFUSE de Gavi (Innovations visant l'utilisation, l'expansion et l'équité de la vaccination), qui permet à certains innovateurs de présenter des innovations démontrées qui remédient aux goulots d'étranglement et aux obstacles fondés sur le sexe dans les systèmes d'immunisation dans les pays les plus pauvres.Le projet cherche à mettre à profit la plateforme INFUSE pour cibler des innovations à fortes retombées parmi les innovateurs d'INFUSE (les « Projets Phares »). Parmi les principales activités, mentionnons : 1) fournir un soutien et une formation pratique en affaires, y compris une supervision et une assistance pour l'élaboration de partenariats pour les Projets Phares d'INFUSE; 2) fournir une assistance aux Projets Phares d'INFUSE pour élaborer un cadre de surveillance et d'évaluation complet; 3) amener des donateurs actuels et potentiels de Gavi à participer à l'élaboration de programmes et de stratégies pour renforcer le rôle des innovations dans l'administration des vaccins et la couverture et l'équité vaccinale.

This project supports Afghanis...tan's Polio Eradication Initiative, which aims to ensure more children are protected from polio by increasing national polio vaccination coverage. Afghanistan is one of the three countries in the world where polio remains widespread. Experts believe that the country is at a critical point in its efforts to eradicate polio. Canada – in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Government of Afghanistan, and other donors – is contributing to providing polio vaccinations to more than nine million children across Afghanistan. Project activities include: (1) carrying out household visits to vaccinate all children in target populations; (2) conducting and strengthening polio immunization campaigns to build immunity; (3) training and building the capacity of front-line workers; (4) conducting regular house-to-house visits and engaging with community influencers to increase knowledge and practice in children's healthcare and polio vaccination; and (5) implementing and strengthening surveillance to rapidly detect the circulation of poliovirus. /Ce projet appuie le Programme d'éradication de la polio en Afghanistan, qui vise à élargir la couverture vaccinale afin que plus d'enfants soient protégés contre la poliomyélite. L'Afghanistan est l'un des trois pays dans le monde où la poliomyélite est encore très répandue. Les experts estiment que les efforts du pays en vue d'éradiquer la poliomyélite en sont à une étape déterminante. Le Canada – en partenariat avec le Fond des Nations Unies pour l'enfance (UNICEF), l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS), le gouvernement de l'Afghanistan et d'autres donateurs, contribue à fournir des vaccins contre la poliomyélite à plus de neuf millions d'enfants à l'échelle de l'Afghanistan. This project aims to maintain ...the gains made towards polio eradication in Nigeria while strengthening the routine immunization system. The project ultimately seeks to eradicate polio in Nigeria. Project activities include: (1) develop village-level micro-plans (vaccination plans detailed down to the household level) to immunize every child against polio (approximately 6.6 million girls and 6.9 million boys); (2) provide training for, and support deployment of, 154,000 vaccination team members (male and female); (3) conduct training for up to 8000 health workers to improve capacity for routine immunization; and (4) conduct intensified routine immunization activities to protect up to 250,000 children from vaccine preventable diseases. /Le projet a pour but de renforcer le système de vaccination de routine au Nigéria et d'augmenter à l'échelle communautaire l'immunité face à la poliomyélite. Le projet vise ultimement à éradiquer la poliomyélite au Nigéria. The objective of these cross-b...order meetings is to coordinate efforts to strengthen surveillance, routine immunization and supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) for polio eradication among bordering areas. Specifically, the initiative aims to improve information sharing between countries on polio eradication, identifying and addressing immunity gaps in migrant and hard to reach populations along borders, and planning for synchronized SIAs along borders.
