This activity will improve the... nutritional status of women and children, with a special emphasis on building resilience through the prevention and treatment of undernutrition while targeting the first 1,000 days of a child's life (conception-24 months of age) in the region of Mopti, Segou and Koulikoro. The activity will target a pragmatic mix of high population density communities and areas that are more rural but have the greatest need for nutrition and WASH services.

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Sc...hool of Public Health's Center for Communication Programs (CCP) was awarded a five-year grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)'s mission in Mali to conduct social and behavior change communication and social marketing (SBCC/SM) activities in that country. Grant activity will strengthen Malians' ability to lead healthy, productive lives by promoting malaria prevention and treatment, good nutrition and hygiene practices as well as reproductive health behaviors like family planning. Pairing social and behavior change communication with social marketing, the initiative will inspire households to acquire healthy behaviors and give them access to life-saving health products.

USAID/Mali Sub-National Govern...ance Project
more
|
Local governance and quality o...f the delivery of basic public services affect all aspects of development. USAID/Mali will jump start the regionalization process through supporting Malian regional governments to accountably demand and allocate funds and execute programs through communes for quality services that are aligned with their priorities. Anticipated results are: accountable and efficient devolution of resources from Bamako to the regions, stronger, more capable regional governance bodies, and improved performance of local governments. Activities will focus on the transparency and traceability of funding flows to the sub-national level and accountability of budget allocations/execution. An emphasis is placed on MCH and NUT due to high malnutrition rates, the lack of nutrition commodities at peripheral levels and the lack of MNCH services at lower levels of the health pyramid. Third party monitoring will be conducted to see if MCH and NUT outcomes have been increased.

MATERNAL AND CHILD SURVIVAL PR...OGRAM (MCSP - FORMERLY RMNCH)
more
|
Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
|
The United States Agency for I...nternational Development's (USAID) Bureau for Global Health's flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions; the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

INTEGRATED GORONGOSA NATIONAL ...PARK AND BUFFER ZONE PROJECT
more
|
Integrated Gorongosa National ...Park and Buffer Zone Project
more
|
Located in Sofala Province, a ...priority USAID province, Gorongosa National Park (GNP) once boasted some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Southern Africa. Although decimated by civil war and its aftermath, wildlife is now recovering. Land use adjacent to the Park mostly consists of agriculture combined with mining, forestry and hunting concessions in certain areas. Biodiversity conservation is strongly linked with human and economic development of surrounding communities in order to guarantee sustainability. The USG supports a range of activities under an umbrella Global Development Alliance to ensure the long-term viability of the GNP by addressing the biodiversity and human needs in and around the park. Issues like poaching and deforestation are also being addressed by working directly with farmers in the buffer zone to increase their yields and incomes. By providing alternative nutrition sources other than poached meat and access to basic health care, like child immunization, malaria prevention and treatment, breastfeeding, and reproductive health services, this improves the overall health of the communities and reduces pressure on the natural resources.

Communication for Improved Hea...lth Outcomes (CIHO)
more
|
Communication for Improved Hea...lth Outcomes Activity (CIHO) will complement the existing efforts by the Government of the Republic of Mozambique (GRM) and development partners to expand access and improve the quality of health services in Sofala. Social and behavior change communications (SBCC) interventions are essential for garnering community support and for addressing human behaviors that are requisite for maximizing the health impact of these health system advances. CIHO will improve Mozambique's capacity to design, implement, and coordinate high-quality SBCC, allowing health promotion efforts to more effectively reduce morbidity and mortality caused by preventable diseases.

GHAR GHAR MA SWASTHYA
|
Ghar Ghar Ma Swasthya
|
Ghar Ghar Maa Swasthya, or Hea...lthy Homes, is a social marketing program in Nepal that works through the private sector to strengthen the marketing and distribution of health products in rural and hard-to-reach areas. This project is managed by FHI 360 in collaboration with the Nepali-managed Nepal CRS Company. The program assists the Government of Nepal in expanding the depth, reach and impact of private-sector social marketing initiatives by providing a low-cost supply of maternal and child health, family planning and HIV prevention products and services. FHI 360 provides technical support in two major areas: improving Nepal CRS Company's institutional sustainability by building its leadership capacity, and increasing the availability and accessibility of health products in hard-to-reach rural areas through implementation of cutting-edge social marketing programs.

Global Health and Food Securit...y in Nepal
more
|
The goal of GHI is to improve ...the nutritional status of women and children under two, through increased homestead food production, improved water, sanitation and hygiene, and improved maternal, newborn, and child health. The goal of FtF in Nepal is to sustainably reduce poverty and hunger by achieving inclusive growth in the agriculture sector, increasing income of farm families and improving nutritional status, especially of women and children. Peace Corps is ideally situated to support the GON and USAID in implementing these projects where the goals of the two projects overlap - i.e. in the area of food security. The purpose of the Peace Corps food security project is to improve the food security of rural families, including nutrition, especially for the most vulnerable population in targeted communities in Nepal. Our Food Security Project has three goals: Community members will practice new or different behaviors related to improving nutrition, hygiene, and sanitation; Community members will gain improved access to diverse and nutritious foods through improved agricultural productivity. Community individuals and groups will adopt skills and strategies to reduce risk and vulnerability to food insecurity

USAID will support the improve...ment of the nutritional status of women and children under five years, with an increased emphasis on the '1,000 days period' which is between pregnancy and a child's second birthday. This activity will work in 40 districts using multi-sectorial and community-based nutrition interventions and will concentrate on evidence-based, age-appropriate feeding practices (at the policy, community and household levels). These include exclusive breastfeeding; maternal and newborn care (including treatment of child illness); infant and young child feeding; maternal nutrition; essential hygiene actions including safe drinking water and safe disposal of feces; healthy timing and spacing for pregnancy; and the dangers of smoking for mothers and their babies. This activity also includes a cross-cutting component that aims to increase access to diversified, nutrient-dense food through home-based gardening and poultry farming.

Caritas-Rwanda will continue t...o improve the nutritional status of mothers and children (especially those under 2 years of age) through community-based interventions in nine districts. The project will seek to improve the well-being of HIV/AIDS-affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and improve the nutritional status of adults living with HIV through cooking demonstrations, nutrition assessments (anthropometric measurements) and nutrition counseling. Of the 73,482 people supported under this program, 14,416 are OVCs, 36,000 are children under five years, and 7,200 are pregnant and lactating women. The project uses cost effective community-based solutions like internal savings and loan groups, farmers field schools and the positive deviance hearth model to address nutritional and financial needs of beneficiaries, with emphasis on resilience and empowerment through economic strengthening, food security, nutrition and hygiene, and increased access to health services.

Rwanda Social Marketing Progra...m (RSMP)
more
|
In Rwanda, the limited availab...ility of public health information remains a significant barrier to individual well-being and the promotion of public health goals. The Rwanda Social Marketing Program (RSMP) seeks to contribute to filling this gap by implementing health communication activities that increase access to health information and health products, and promote healthy behaviors among Rwandans on issues related to HIV and AIDS, malaria, family planning, and child survival. Target beneficiaries include vulnerable groups such as female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSM), motorcycle taxi drivers, truck drivers, people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV), and caregivers of children under five.
