The project recruits new membe...rs to the Mine Workers' Wives Associations (MWA) of Obuasi and Tarkwa, Ghana, and supports the women's literacy and entrepreneurship skills through training, counseling and coaching. Additionally the associations improve family welfare through health education campaigns and peer support groups focusing on family life education and self-confidence development. The status of the women who are rather dependent on their spouses is weak, which leads to poor possibilities to participate in improving the quality of life of their families and the welfare of the whole community. By increasing the self-confidence and concrete life ownership of the women their more active role in the families and community development is supported. The beneficiaries are primarily the women empowered by the project and secondarily their families and the whole communities. The project is implemented by the Mine Workers' Wives Associations (MWA) of Obuasi and Tarkwa and managed and facilitated by the Ghana Mine Workers' Union (GMWU).

Coastal Community Development ...Programme in Krishna District. The Coastal Community Development Programme focuses on increasing the attitude of self-help in local communities in the district of Krishna. Fida partners with the Full Gospel Churches of India (FGCI). The work concentrates on the poorest communities in the vulnerable coastal region where most families get their income from agriculture labour and fishing. The main approach of the programme is that of Community Health Education (CHE). Through the programme the village communities gain courage as well as practical tools and know-how for developing their own communities. For instance, Community Health Educators are trained and self-help groups formed in each village, and youth (men and women) are trained in vocational skills. As the people in the villages learn new skills and are encouraged to take initiative, they become willing and able to develop their own communities. And as they begin to take action, the quality of life in the communities improves. In several villages the increased attitude of self-help has already led to a great deal of improvements in e.g. children's school attendance, adult literacy, livelihood skills and means, and prevention of common diseases.

NYAGOWA WATER SUPPLY
|
Nyagowa Water Supply
|
Kenya has approximately 40 mil...lion people and nearly half of the population lack clean drinking water. Nyagowa is situated in an area where water sometimes is found only in small water streams and where cattle and people have to share the same water source. Drinking water is fetched from streams or from shallow wells water which is not drinkable untreated. In many cases water is collected from roofs and roofs may sometimes be carriers of various diceases spread by birds and small vector animals. Some roofing materials are also hazardous for peoples health. Up to 50 % of the deceases are waterborne deceases. The plan of the project is therefore to provide the health facility schools and the local community with clean drinking water which need not to be boiled before consumption. If the water flow is high enough the excess water will be led to water basins for the cattle. The plan of the project is to drill a hole to groundwater level in order to pump up clean drinkable water. The pumping system will be driven by solar energy (with an option to use landline electricity at times) which is an environment friendly sustainable and affordable way for the people to get clean water. Water will be distributed to strategically well placed water stations through a piping systems and excess water will be distributed to drinking basins for the cattle. Concerning the sanitary conditions there are outdoor latrines built on a two-three meters deep wells in most of the homes. Hygiene is cared for either in streams or in private places specifically arranged for this nearby the homes. This project will therefore mostly concentrate on how to protect clean water from being contaminated and to encourage people to construct protected latrines where needed. No water flush toilets are in the area and the project will not build any either. The plan of the project is also to replace the water catching roofmaterial of the Health Clinic with ironsheets since water is collected from the roof to a tank. Water from the rainwater tank is today used for cleaning floors and for other use in the clinic but since the roof material is containing asbestos it should long ago have been replaced. If the roofmaterial is changed the rainwater tank may after a small repair serve as a water reserve for the clinic and be used in case of temporary absence of water from the borewell eg during maintenance of the water supply system.

The evaluation of legislation ...of ESC rights, Public interest litigation, advocacy , the organization s support . Hakijamii, in its project, focuses on the right to health, water and sanitation, and implementations of these rights. The Constitution defines the part of health care as a fundamental right for all citizens, but especially among the poor the unavailability of services is a major problem. The development process of the nationwide network of water distribution network, in turn, has suffered from inefficiency, corruption and mismanagement. One of the downturn was, when along with the Water Act in the 2002, the water privatizations occurred. From the lack of clean water and sanitation suffer both rural and urban slums, and in particular the marginalized groups. Kenya s estimated population of 42 million, about 30% now live in cities, and the urbanization is rapid. Slums have been incorporated into urban planning and budgeting, and residents have very little chance of the health, education and other basic services. It is estimated that only 20 per cent of slum residents have the opportunity to have permanently clean water and slum residents also pay out of the water several times more compared to other residents. The project aims to promote economic and social rights implementation. The aim is both to improve the State s procedures for new policies and legislation, as well as through the adoption of improving the economic and social rights, the implementation of fundamental rights through the bringing of the action. The project beneficiaries are the most vulnerable groups whose needs are taken into account in the content promoted laws; women, the elderly, the disabled, children, young people and minorities, and other vulnerable groups. Hakijamii was founded in 2004 to fill the gap in Kenya to deal between the organizations, which focuses on the human rights field, and on the other hand the organizations that handle the economic and social problems in a non-legal perspective.

The ethnic communities of the ...mountain region are poor and Laos' government's scarce resources are not enough to ensure a sufficient support for children's basic education. The adult population is still largely illiterate and different beliefs and even harmful traditions guide people's lives. Even with a little knowledge, people's health situation and quality of life can be significantly improved. In the project village trainers and model families are trained on different basic life issues like prevention of disease, sanitation and hygiene, agriculture, environmental conservation, and small business activity. In addition, according to different villages' needs, the villages are helped in building aqueducts and lavatories as well as maintaining school buildings and learning materials. The project's beneficiaries are women and children. The project goal is the holistic change of the communities, which includes holistic health, education and livelihood. The project purpose is the increased know-how of preventable diseases, clean drinking water, sanitation and the environment. The project results in decreased number of diarrheal diseases as well as the increase of general satisfaction and belief in a better tomorrow. The significance of education improves and almost 100% of school-aged children go to school.

There is a great need for impr...oving the health care for the elderly in Malawi. The country has no organized health care of the elderly people. Widow?s Mite Elderly Village to Malawi-project is the first project in the country that focuses on improving the conditions for the elderly. The project strenghtens the operation that was started in 2013. According to the Rehabilitation Program the village residents as well as residents of the clinic are provided help for moving. According to the Subsistence Program guidance and practical tools for the acquisition of food and additional income are provided for the elderly. Extension project will further develop the necessarily needed health services for the poorest which are not currently organized by the Malawi government. Mostly First Aid-types of surgeries operating Surgery Unit will be established in connection with the newly established clinic. Also a Laboratory to support it's operation and a Dental Clinic and a Pharmacy to ensure access to medicines for local residents. These actions strengthen the operations of the Elderly Clinic that was established in the previous project.

DEVELOPING MONGOLIAN MEDICAL I...NFRASTRUCTURE THROUGH ENHANCED TRAINING OF DOCTORS FOR EVALUATION FOR AND IN-FLIGHT PATIENT CARE.

Developing Mongolian Medical i...nfrastructure through enhanced training of Doctors for evaluation for and in-flight patient care.
more
|
The overall objective is to im...prove the access to medical care and treatment for all Mongolians regardless of where they live. Specialized health care of one million people in Mongolian vast countryside depends on the medical services available in the capital but undeveloped road network hinders patient transfers by road. Consequently Mongolia is developing in-flight medical transfers to help countryside hospitals with only basic treatment capability. This project develops the capacity of the Mongolian Emergency Medical network of the Ministry of Health. The health care professionals working in this area have received limited or no training in the field of patient transport or in-flight patient care. Training by Finnish aeromedical experts enables Mongolian doctors to make transport safe for patients requiring treatment in the capital. This increases the quality and capacity Mongolian medical and health infrastructure.Mongolian doctors lack current training in relevant aeromedical issues and in-flight patient care. The patient security is compromised when medical flights are requested to remote areas in Mongolia where doctors and nurses have no aeromedical knowledge. There is lack of understanding on general principles of patient transfers and phenomena caused by reduced pressure and oxygen levels in-flight. Receiving specific training on patient transfers and in-flight patient care by Finnish aeromedical experts will enhance Mongolian Medical infrastructure and result in safer and more secure medical flights. This training is also applicable to any transport of patients. Thereby it will build the infrastructure and capacity of the health care system and emergency patient care system in Mongolia.

The Myanmar Country Programme ...contributes to increased justice and strengthened human dignity and peace in Myanmar. At the community level, the Programme aims to improve access to education and digital learning opportunities for poor and vulnerable children and youth in the target communities. These will be achieved by improving the quality of education through increasing the availability of extra-curricular activities, strengthening household capacities to earn income and pay for the school related expenses, and by increasing awareness and knowledge about rights of all children in target communities and among the poorest households.#The Programme works in multiple communities in three different states, Rakhine, Kachin and Yangon. Childrens school dropout rates, especially when looking at secondary education, are alarmingly high in the programme areas. The baseline indicates that in some target communities the secondary education enrolment rate is as low as 50% of children. The present situation, if not addressed, is a key factor leading to increased disparity and inequality. The poorest households, especially those with girls and people living with disabilities, are most affected.#The implementing partner of the Country Programme is Assemblies of God Myanmar (AoGMM), a church denomination. It is a self-reliant civil society actor consisting of over 1000 local churches and parishes. The Programme is partly designed based on lessons learned from earlier collaboration, during which 92 communities were reached through a community-based health education programme. Once the partners knowledge and management capacity regarding childrens right for education and organisational development increases, the partner will be in position to upscale the work into a nationwide programme. The impact of the work will then multiply to tens of thousands of the most vulnerable children and youth. The Programme works directly with about 8600 beneficiaries in improving their right to education and an adequate standard of living. In addition, the lives of an estimated 140 000 indirect beneficiaries are improved through the extensive advocacy work carried out by the local partner.

The Government has taken a num...ber of action plans and policies designed to promote the realization of public health, education and food security. At the local level policies and plans rarely are implemented, and examples of the money allocated to the vulnerable groups' education often ends up in some other use. The project aims to promote ESC rights, especially the the realization right to education, food and health. The project aims to promote that the Government's plans for the realization of the above-mentioned rights are concerned, to increase the public officers' responsibility and capacity, by increasing the transparency of public authorities and the beneficiaries' awareness of their rights. The project builds the capacity of the responsible authorities, so that they contribute to the realization of plans the government the right to education, food and health-related issues. The project will also inform the communities about their rights focusing on these rights. The project will be implemented in five counties: Morang, Makawanpur, Kaski, Banke and Kailali. INSEC is Nepal's most important and most reliable universal human rights organizations. Informal Sector Service Centre INSEC was registered in 1991. While most infectious diseases... are preventable they still account for over two thirds of childhood mortality in developing countries such as Nigeria. In Nigeria the Government (with UNICEF support) has launched a National School Health Policy with a respective action plan for the country but implementation of the policy has been slow resulting in most of the schools still lacking basic health services. Within this context the objective of the project is to support the Oyo State in implementing the school health services with a long-term aim to improve the health status of children in primary schools in Ibadan.

Empowering Partner for Communi...ty Development. The project seeks to improve the capacity of a local partner in social work. Pakistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Child labour is very common and large amounts of Pakistani children remain without basic education. Fida partners with the Assemblies of God (AOG) church of Peshawar in order to address the needs of the people in North West Pakistan. The project comprises of three main components: Community Health Education (CHE) in the local villages, adult literacy classes and the establishment of a pre-school. Fida and AOG work together in the local communities, which provide the partner with hands-on training in practical community development work. As the partner's capacities build up, the social work the church does will improve. The CHE component will help the communities in becoming the main actors in their own development and the pre-school will provide the children with much-needed education. These elements together will contribute towards the overall improvement in life management and quality of life in the local communities.

Digital Health Future: Roadmap...ping South African Strategy
more
|
CSIR's (The Council for Scient...ific and Industrial Research ) Meraka Instutute's and VTT's (Technical Research Centre of Finland) ICI project Digital Health Future: Roadmapping South African Strategy is set to accelerate and augment the use of new technologies to address South Africa's social and health challenges by strengthening CSIR-Meraka's capacity to plan manage and implement society wide technology strategies. The project seeks to strengthen South Africa's capacity to valorise the potential of ICT for the country's health sector. VTT-CSIR-Meraka collaboration is about capacity building and collaborative analysis of where digital technologies are to make a difference in the health care what the particular and central South African conditions and priorities affected by this potential are and how significant change should be implemented. The final beneficiaries of the project will be the communities that have suffered from the lack of resources in health care and the poor accessibility of health services. The two-year project capitalises on VTT's expertise and has a budget of about 444 000 euros.

CONTRIBUTING TO CAPACITY BUILD...ING OF DEVELOPING AND USING HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN TANZANIA
more
|
Contributing to capacity build...ing of developing and using Health Information Systems in Tanzania
more
|
Health Information Systems (HI...S) are becoming part of the Tanzanian health care thus advancing good governance and transparency in health care system functionalities. The challenge is that there is not enough ICT and HIS skills knowledge and experience in health care service providers. This project supports both health care personnel in taking HIS into use and HIS service providers in assessing developing and maintaining HISs based on open source software at sustainable cost. The objective of the project is also to support creation of local business by training ICT and HIS key-users and HIS deployment and maintenance entrepreneurs. Target groups of the project are third sector actors (ELCT ALMC TOHS Itete Ilembula) and the actors which will spread the skills wider in the ecosystem after the project has ended (APHFTA CSSC UDSM NM-AIST) e.g. by education and research. Project improves HIS buyers? skills in Tanzanian health care and its collaborators? skills in taking HIS into use and in evaluating developing and maintaining HIS. Both ICT and health professionals? expertise will be utilized in developing these HIS competences. Trainings will be based on the development needs identified by the Tanzanian collaborators. Finnish actors do not have ready-made solutions but they will offer their experiences and expertise to support development of the solutions by hands-on-doing and collaborative learning. Collaborator Workshops will be organized yearly either in Tanzania or in Finland to review the progress of the project and to update the plans together in more detail for the coming year. It also gives an opportunity to get familiar with the health care in the other country as well as to share experiences about the use of the HIS successes and challenges.Use of HISs makes it possible for the Tanzanian Ministry of Health to have reliable information about the health system performance epidemiology of diseases and health outcomes and about the status of health care services and their delivery in different parts of the country. This information provides a basis for the future decision making in further development of the health care system.

FELM's partner, the North East...ern Diocese of the ev.luth. Church in Tanzania, constructs a district hospital in collaboration with Tanzanian government. Before the opening of Kilindi CDH the nearest hospital was 120 km away in the neighbourg district Handeni. Due to bad roads and poor transport facilities hospital services were often impossible to reach. Particularly mothers and children were suffering from the situation. The hospital was opened in 2009 by opening the most crucial services like maternity ward and operating theatre. By the end of 2013 two general wards, an out patients department, kitchen, laundry, mortuary and paediatric ward were completed. To offer the community a complete package of health services as a council Designated Hospital in Tanzanian health care system there is still need for Reproductive and Child care unit, Care and treatment clinic, Laboratory building, Administration block and a Staff house block by the end of 2016. Since the opening of Kilindi CDH access to health services in the area has improved remarkably, people get treatment and services and delivery in hospital save lives for mothers and children. The catchment area of the hospital is Kilindi district which has approx. 237.000 inhabitants. They are mainly small scale farmers and pastoralists. The project is implemented by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania North Eastern Diocese ELCT-NED) which is FELM's longtime partner and well known and appreciated for her services in the region (e.g. 3 hospitals, schools, university).

The activities are to increase... the capacity of journalists about the connection between intellectual property rights rights and human rights; to achieve wider media coverage for the right to health campaign; to promote the right to health by identifying the political and moral demands and by modifying them as rights and constitutional obligations, applying of legal means, such as by making a legal analysis, by participating in the trials and developing of legal strategies; to increase and to make more efficient the networking and co-operation of local organizations, in order to enable them to make the state responsible for human rights obligations regarding the right to health; to increase the capacity of national organizations to understand the right to health, and to make the related advocacy. ESC rights are fulfilled unevenly across the country and between different population groups, and in particular the most vulnerable groups are affected by the situation. The project aims to: 1) get the media interested in intellectual property rights and human rights in the context as well as the right to health, 2) to promote the health right based litigation and other legal instruments, 3) advocacy work by networking and co-operation of the NGO field, and 4) to increase the capacity of national NGOs to understand the right to health. As direct beneficiaries of the project are 25 journalists involved in the training, non-governmental leaders participating in the meetings and the coalition (the Coalition is Maternal Health) and political decision-makers. The project will also benefit the most vulnerable groups who currently suffer the most from the Ugandan health system shortcomings. Center for Health, Human Rights and Development CEHURD was established in 2007 and registered in December 2009. It works in the health-related rights and public health legislation. CEHURDin activities focus on the most vulnerable groups such as women, children, orphans, sexual minorities, HIV-positive, disabled people and refugees.

The project works at improving... community awareness relating to the health literacy, behavioural practices and disease prevention in Nablus, while also working with medical staff and nurses in Clinics/Hospitals to improve their medical skills and communication. The project also works closely with the Ministry of Education (School Health Sector) to promote healthy habits and health awareness among students, as well as people with special needs. The Palestinian population is going through an epidemiological and demographic transition. Behind the standard health indicators lies much suffering. People often report being negatively affected by constant conflict and military occupation, checkpoint closures, and the Israeli siege. Chronic or non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a key challenge for the health system in Palestine. The goal of the project is promoted behaviours and improved disease prevention as upstream policy and practice in the Palestinian health system. The purpose is improved community awareness relating to the health literacy, behavioural practices and disease prevention in Nablus and Gaza. The beneficiaries of the project include people with disabilities, women, children, nurses and doctors. As the results of the project, 150 people from the health sectors have received training in Primary Health Care. Around 4 500 students were exposed to healthy life habits. The awareness of health care among people with special needs has increased. 100 women received a series of trainings in health care, and free medical days were provided to hundreds of people.

REDUCING TB-RELATED MORBIDITY ...AND MORTALITY BETWEEN NOW AND 2015 IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GOARLS OF THE STOP TB PARTNERSHIP AND THE MDGS
more

Reducing tuberculosis-related ...morbidity and mortality between now and 2015 in accordance with the goarls of the STOP TB Partnership and the Millennium Development Goals
more
|
While still under control, tub...erculosis (TB) prevalence, incidence and mortality rates have increased in Tunisia in recent years, affecting the country's prospects of realizing the Millennium Development Goal to halve TB prevalence and mortality by 2015 as compared with 1990. In addition, between 2002 and 2006 the prevalence of multidrug-resistant TB increased from 1.14 percent to 2.7 percent among new cases, and from 31 percent to 36 percent among retreated cases. The program supported by this grant aims to address gaps in the national TB strategy through strengthening DOTS (the basic package that underpins the Stop TB Strategy), improving prevention and care of multidrug-resistant TB, as well as by contributing to lower the incidence of TB among high-risk population groups (contact persons, prisoners and health care staff). Additional objectives are to decrease the lead time for testing suspected TB cases at the basic health care center level through reinforcement of the laboratory network; improve the TB monitoring and evaluation system; and strengthen national program management. The program is supported by two Global Fund grants implemented by a government and civil society Principal Recipient, respectively, working in partnership. This grant funds the majority of the activities.

F.A: STRONG UNIONS AND QPS IN ...PHILIPPINES HEALTH SECTOR
more
|
F.a: Strong unions and QPS in ...Philippines health sector
more
|
The project strengthens health... sector trade unions, their joint collaboration and their advocacy in legislative processes and to improve the public health care system in the Philippines. The main objective is the enactment into law of two proposed legislative bills on health: raising of the paid maternity leave to 100 days and expanding the coverage of national health insurance scheme to all Filipinos through Universal Health Care bill. Increasing union membership, training, awareness raising and networking of health workers' organizations contribute to the advocacy work. The Philippine Government continues cutting funds from public health care and weakening the working conditions of public health workers, through privatization of public health services and favouring short-term contracts and contract agency labour. The privatization has already now decreased the health budget which challenges the availability of services and the working conditions of health workers. Even vital health services are being transferred from public management to private enterprises. At the same time health care is no longer free of charge. Close to 10 million Filipinos are not covered by National Health Insurance. Side services such as cleaning, laundry, catering and security are being outsourced which increases the dispersion of workers and thus makes organizing more difficult. Weak and dispersed unions are not capable of efficient interest representation of the workers. As a result, the understanding of the new legislative measures among the health sector unions increases and the political approval and enactment into law of those bills are promoted by advocating political decision-makers. The joint collaboration of the trade unions improves and union membership increases by at least 13 000 new members: 9 new local unions in public health care and 3 new unions in private health care join the coalition. Also, an increase for public health care budget will be advocated. The beneficiaries are Philippine health sector workers and citizens using the health services. The project is implemented by Public Services International (PSI) together with its member unions in the Philippines (AFW, CIU, PGEA, PSLINK ja PIPSEA).
