This activity will work with t...he Zambian government (GRZ) to develop and implement national strategies and plans that address challenges faced by the health sector, including the shortage of human resources, limited management and leadership skills among staff, inadequate coordination and integration of health programs, and weak public financial management systems. ~The activity will provide technical assistance to the GRZ to build the capacity of health managers and providers at all levels of the health system to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs. ~The activity will also strengthen the capacity of community structures, such as Neighborhood Health Committees, to enhance community-level participation in the health sector. ~Additionally, this activity will support the implementation of community-level nutrition interventions to address chronic malnutrition in targeted districts, and safe motherhood interventions that support the Saving Mothers, Giving Life endeavor.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The Health Sector Resiliency (...HSR) activity supports GoA to foster a strengthened, reformed, and increasingly self-reliant health system prepared for the decreased donor support anticipated over the coming decade. HSR will work closely with MoPH to strengthen the ministry to evaluate and reform the health sector and undertake tasks such as upgrading and consolidating the Health Information System and databases to a web-based data warehouse; institutionalizing MoPH's capacity to provide in-service training; exploring new models of Public Private Partnerships; improving health financing data, analysis, and use; identifying and implementing innovative financing mechanisms, increasing domestic revenue generation for health; clarifying central and provincial roles; and improving governance at the provincial level in close collaboration and coordination with the System Enhancement for Health Action in Transition project.

HEMAYAT will increase access a...nd availability of gender-sensitive family planning, maternal, newborn, and child health (FP/MNCH) services at the facility and community levels while supporting introduction and scale-up of culturally appropriate, cost-effective, high impact interventions that strengthen the Ministry of Public Health's (MoPH) basic package of health services. HEMAYAT will work to strengthening the technical and stewardship capacity of Reproductive Health and Child and Adolescent departments of the MoPH, Provincial Public Health Officers, in-service and pre-service training institutions, implementing NGOs, and communities. HEMAYAT will collaborate with the MoPH to broadcast and disseminate an already-developed FP TV series in local languages. Other mass media endeavors include billboard messaging, written FP messaging, and radio spots with both FP and gender awareness content. HEMAYAT will also support media outlets which provide high volume and quality FP coverage.

Sustaining Technical and Analy...tic Resources (STAR)
more
STAR improves the effectivenes...s of global health programs worldwide by developing and strengthening the capacity of global health professionals by placing fellows and interns in external institutions, primarily in USAID-supported countries, and in USAID in partnership with academic and other institutions. STAR strengthens the technical and analytic professional cadre of human resources for global health by partnering with organizations of higher learning, development research, and/or health professional associations. Leveraging the expertise, resources, and partnerships of academic institutions and many other types of organizations, STAR contributes to strengthening institutions in developing countries that provide technical leadership and improve systems that promote technical collaboration across the global health community. STAR strengthens the pool of health professionals globally through field experience with developing country organizations, provides opportunities to diverse health professionals who mirror the populations USAID serves globally to build their skills and gain exposure to international health programs, and improves collaborative systems and long-term, sustainable partnerships for open exchange and utilization of information, knowledge, and educational resources to promote technical excellence and learning.

The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions; the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

MATERNAL AND CHILD SURVIVAL PR...OGRAM (MCSP - FORMERLY RMNCH)
more
Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths.

BUILDING HEALTHY CITIES (BHC)
Building Healthy Cities (BHC)
The Building Healthy Cities (B...HC) project aims to refocus city policies, planning, and services with a health equity lens while improving data-driven decision-making for 'Smart Cities' in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The goal is to identify cost-efficient yet high impact ways to improve urban health across sectors; ensure health is appropriately accounted for within urban planning; reduce transaction costs of data produced for policy decisions; and empower citizens to demand better health-related services. The anticipated results of the project's work include changes to urban planning that improve access to health services, decrease risk factors for chronic diseases, lower the burden of infectious diseases, and widen access to data related to social determinants of health.

Marketing Innovations for Sust...ainable Health Development
more
The Marketing Innovations for ...Sustainable Health Development is a Global Development Alliance that will use commercial marketing techniques to promote public health products and services through private sector providers and private sector pharmacies. The alliance will introduce new products into the market, engage private sector health facilities to provide public health services and commodities for family planning, maternal and child health, tuberculosis, and nutrition, and adopt non-conventional approaches to expand markets to reach low income groups with affordably priced services. The activity will specifically reach underserved demographic groups such as women and girls, adolescents, and the urban and semi-urban population. The activity will increase the use of long acting and reversible contraceptive methods, adding an estimated five million couple years of protection.
