DEVELOPING AN INFORMATION SHAR...ING FRAMEWORK FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY FOR CORONAVIRUS PREVENTION IN SOUTH ASIA

Developing an information shar...ing framework for public awareness and advocacy for coronavirus prevention in South Asia
more
|
Developing countries are expec...ted to be disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis because these societies may be more vulnerable to higher infection rates and greater death rates due to weaker health systems. Many countries have less fiscal capacity to invest in interventions to flatten the curve and keep daily cases at a manageable level for their healthcare systems.Misinformation and disinformation have become a major issue during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations system and the World Health Organization have labelled current trends in misinformation and cybercrime as an infodemic parallel to the COVID-19 pandemic. Misinformation is a significant problem for vulnerable populations in the contexts of weak public health systems and insufficient healthcare facilities. It not only hinders effective responses to the pandemic, in several countries it is leading to instability and violence against ethnic groups accused of transmitting the virus, and against healthcare facilities and professionals targeted by conspiracy theories. Despite having high GDP growth rates, South Asia lags with respect to systems, infrastructure, and spending on public healthcare. Population density in South Asia is very high, making managing and containing outbreaks, especially in dense slums, very difficult. This project aims to counter misinformation about COVID-19 in the region by developing factual content for new media. It will study how misinformation relating to COVID-19 circulates and create content customized for context, culture, and language across communities in South Asia.

LIFELINE COMMUNICATION TO TACK...LE THE COVID-19 INFODEMIC/À VENIR

Lifeline communication to tack...le the Covid-19 infodemic/à venir
more
|
There are major unmet needs in... the current global response to Covid-19, BBC Media Action will support the overall information ecosystem to communicate effectively around Covid-19 and specifically around addressing the feminization of the pandemic. At this stage of the pandemic, it is critical to address both the primary issues of prevention and treatment and the secondary effects, such as on livelihoods, security and psychosocial wellbeing. Women and girls are impacted disproportionally by the pandemic, and as such, the United Nations has called for women and girls to be put at the center of efforts to recover from Covid-19. Activities will surround three related areas: 1) create content that addresses what WHO refers to as the infodemic along with the secondary impacts of Covid-19 – with a strong focus on the impact of the pandemic on women and girls, 2) strengthen the communication capacity of local media, and 3) support more effective integration of communication within the overall humanitarian response. These efforts combined will help address the urgent need for improved, accurate and consistent communication at scale, with a focus on what the pandemic means for women and girls specifically, as a means to help reduce the negative impact on their lives and create sustainable benefits for the common good. / à venir

Project beneficiaries include 70,000 children (of which 50% are girls), approximately 350,000 people members of their families (of which 50% are women), and 2,100 teachers (of which 840 are women). The project expects to indirectly reach up to 637,837 Liberians (of which 50% are women) and 687,989 Sierra Leoneans (of which 50% are women) who live in the districts, and are able to listen to the radio where the programs are broadcasting.

|

|

|

Developing integrated guidelin...es for health care workers in response to the Covid-19 pandemic in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
more
|
The project develops an integr...ated plan for healthcare workers (HCWs) to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. In many low- and middle-income countries, health care systems are under financed and health care workers (HCWs) in hospitals, public and private primary care facilities lack appropriate guidance. The World Health Organization has produced technical guidance for pandemics but this guidance is broad. To support HCWs, the team will update technical guidelines and contextualize it for use by doctors, nurses and community health workers. The integrated plan will provide role specific guidelines for HCWs to manage COVID-19 suspects and cases regarding hospital patient flow, infection control, patient supervision and support in communities. The team will learn from frontline experiences in China but the focus of work will be in the Philippines and Sri Lanka, which have reported COVID-19 cases. The team will work with policymakers, HCWs and non-governmental organizations in the Philippines and in Sri Lanka to develop the guidelines and training modules. The integrated plan and associated tools will be tested for feasibility and acceptability among HCWs in the Philippines, and further adapted in Sri Lanka. This integrated response strategy aims to strengthen the skills of HCWs, reduce patient overload at hospitals, avoid hospital transmission, reduce community transmission and public panic, provide patient support and reduce stigma. From this work, the team will generate a generic version for use in other countries in response to COVID-19 and related disease outbreaks. The team is led by Xiaolin Wei, University of Toronto, and involves researchers and collaborating organizations from Canada, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. This project was selected for funding through the Canadian 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Rapid Research Funding Opportunity which was coordinated by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in partnership with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and Genome Canada.

|

|

The project aims to empower yo...ung women and girls across Tanzania to make their own decisions regarding their social, economic and political rights, by launching a new iteration of its nationally recognized youth radio show Niambie centered on transforming young women and men's attitudes towards women's rights and gender equality. Project activities include weekly radio programmes, daily social media content and live community events that focus on a wide range of women's rights issues and promoting gender equality. The project also builds connections, linkages and referrals to locally available services that support the social, economic and political rights of young women and girls. The project works to expand the reach of the show's media content, reinvigorate its audio output, and invest in visual content for social media and television. In parallel, the project trains a new generation of young women and men presenters and producers to lead and develop local sister-shows that promote gender equality and raise awareness on issues affecting women and girls in Tanzania. By working closely with the government, civil society and multilateral organizations, the project also amplifies the gender equality messages of these partners.
