WP-Medshr, COVID-19 - Medical ...Education and Resources for Doctors and HCPs across Africa and the Middle East
more
|
The aim of the project is to t...rain doctors and medical staff in Africa and the Middle East in the areas of prevention, diagnosis and management of COVID-19 via the MedShr platform. MedShr is an app / web platform that enables peer-to-peer learning and imparts medical knowledge to doctors and people who work in the health care profession. The project uses the digital app and platform for education through the preparation and discussion of clinical cases and the provision of materials for the prevention, diagnosis and management of COVID-19 in resource-poor areas. With MdShr, thousands of doctors and medical staff can be reached quickly and inexpensively.

March 2020 – In response to ...the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, the United Nations launched the Global Humanitarian Response Plan (GHRP) on March 25th, 2020. This project helps contribute ...to stability in South Sudan by countering misinformation, which exacerbates conflict and hinders responses to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The project supports the Hagiga Wahid pilot initiative, an interactive, two-way, mobile phone-based information system that engages citizens in monitoring, verifying, and countering the spread of misinformation. Subscribers to the information communication technology system can anonymously report rumours via channels such as text-messaging, toll-free voice lines, and social media. This information is securely stored on a server outside of South Sudan in accordance with data protection in humanitarian action best practice. Staff, a network of trained volunteers, and trusted key stakeholders investigate these rumors and report their findings back to the subscriber. Project activities include: (1) adapting the SMS pilot-tested short code to nation-wide reach, and (2) building the local subscriber base from 500 to 5,000. The key elements of this work include trust building, the provision of timely and reliable information, engaging widely with different communities to mitigate bias, and targeted messaging to beneficiaries based on self-identified needs.

March 2020 – In response to ...the COVID19 global pandemic, the United Nations launched the Global Humanitarian Response Plan (GHRP) on 25 March 2020. The GHRP seeks to respond to the direct public health and immediate humanitarian consequences of the pandemic. It has three strategic priorities: 1) containing the spread of the pandemic, 2) decreasing the deterioration of human assets and rights, social cohesion and livelihoods, and 3) protecting, assisting and advocating for refugees, internally displaced people, migrants and host communities particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. With GAC's support, WFP is providing tangible assets and supply chain services required for humanitarian and health actors to be able to deliver the response outlined in this GHRP. Project activities include: (1) establishing and reinforcing international staging areas and regional hubs for cargo consolidation and forwarding, (2) providing logistics services through sea vessels and aircrafts, from international staging areas to regional hubs, and onwards to priority country points of entry, and (3) providing the humanitarian community with medical evacuation services and the infrastructure for field clinics (not medical equipment) for front line aid workers.

Developing countries are expec...ted to be disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis because these societies may be more vulnerable to higher infection rates and greater death rates due to weaker health systems. Many countries have less fiscal capacity to invest in interventions to flatten the curve and keep daily cases at a manageable level for their healthcare systems.Misinformation and disinformation have become a major issue during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations system and the World Health Organization have labelled current trends in misinformation and cybercrime as an infodemic parallel to the COVID-19 pandemic. Misinformation is a significant problem for vulnerable populations in the contexts of weak public health systems and insufficient healthcare facilities. It not only hinders effective responses to the pandemic, in several countries it is leading to instability and violence against ethnic groups accused of transmitting the virus, and against healthcare facilities and professionals targeted by conspiracy theories. Despite having high GDP growth rates, South Asia lags with respect to systems, infrastructure, and spending on public healthcare. Population density in South Asia is very high, making managing and containing outbreaks, especially in dense slums, very difficult. This project aims to counter misinformation about COVID-19 in the region by developing factual content for new media. It will study how misinformation relating to COVID-19 circulates and create content customized for context, culture, and language across communities in South Asia.

This project aims to improve l...earning outcomes for out-of-school children, particularly girls and children with disabilities, in conflict-affected and marginalized communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The project builds on a 4-year pilot project implemented by War Child Canada that used interactive radio instruction to reach learners unable to participate in the formal school system. The project aims to scale-up the radio-based education approach to ensure continuity of education for learners affected by school closure, and to support COVID-19 prevention messages. Project activities include: (1) providing training to 100 education assistants and ministry personnel in Interactive Radio Learning and gender-responsive education, (2) broadcasting of accelerated learning curriculum in three new DRC provinces (Haut Katanga, Ituri and Tanganyika), (3) supporting learners through access to education assistants via toll-free hotline and on-air question and answer period following radio broadcasts, (4) developing and broadcasting of daily radio spots with messaging on health education, gender-based violence and the importance of girls' education, and (5) providing water, sanitation and hygiene support to identified education structures based on rapid needs assessment to facilitate the back to school campaign. This project expects that an additional 366,937 (of which 184,569 are girls and 182,368 are boys) crisis-affected learners have access to quality education.
