NGO: International Rescue Comm...ittee (IRC) https://www.ngoaidmap.org/projects/13255 We first began assisting Nigeriens in 2013, providing emergency and protection assistance to refugees and returning Nigeriens. Despite increased violence at the border, the IRC continues to work with local communities and support those in need.
As the country struggles to recover from natural disasters and to support an influx of refugees from neighboring countries, the IRC is focusing our efforts in the Diffa, Tillaberi and Tahoua regions by:
• providing essential equipment and medicine to local health care centers;
• ensuring the welfare of refugees through child-protection and prevention of violence against women
• screening and treating severely malnourished children and offering training in nutrition and hygiene;
• digging wells to irrigate crops;
• providing rapid-response emergency relief for Nigerian refugees and Nigeriens affected by crisis;
• building classrooms and training teachers to support refugees and local children affected by violence and poverty;
• operating programs that provide cash transfers, food vouchers and agricultural support to vulnerable families.

ECHO/SSD/EDF/2014/01007 - Prot...ecting and promoting maternal and child nutrition and reducing morbidity and mortality caused by cholera amongst crisis affected populations in South Sudan
more
|
Save the Children received fun...ding from DG-ECHO to address acute malnutrition and respond to cholera outbreak in Jonglei and Eastern Equatorial during 2014. These areas targeted included Nyirol, Akobo and Bor South counties (Jonglei state) whose global acute malnutrition rates were above the WHO emergency thresholds. Similarly, Magwai, Torit, Kapoeta North, and Lafon counties, Eastern Equatoria were targeted for the Cholera Response. The main project objective was Protecting and Promoting maternal and child nutrition and reducing morbidity and mortality caused by cholera amongst crisis affected populations in South Sudan
In this action efforts focused on preventing increases in acute malnutrition, morbidity and mortality rates in Nyirol, Akobo and Bor counties, Jonglei State. Save the Children Fund (SC) continued implementing and scaling up direct nutrition interventions through a Community Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) approach. Prevention and timely treatment of Moderate Acute Malnutrition was considered critical in lowering the incidence of severe acute malnutrition. This action also focused on promoting Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E), emphasizing exclusive and continued breastfeeding and optimal complementary feeding in children 6-23 months. Child survival interventions such as de-worming, Vitamin A supplementation and immunization (especially measles vaccinations) are critical components. Activities were supposed to be coordinated with health partners on ground. Further, this action responded to the cholera outbreak in South Sudan by ensuring adequate and timely access to cholera treatment especially targeting the East Equatoria State. The current cholera outbreak was initially declared in Juba in April 2014 and was latter spread country wide with suspected or confirmed cases reported in nine out of the ten South Sudan states. As of 9th July 2014, more than 3000 cases have been reported with 70 confirmed deaths. Improving access to care and strengthening preventive measures in Eastern Equatoria targeted by this action was expected to avert morbidities and mortalities related to confirmed /suspected cholera cases in the targeted communities.

Key results
UNICEF is playing ...a critical role in the nutrition sector, supporting both institutional improvements and providing technical, financial and material assistance to government and non-government partners.
UNICEF provided assistance to some 180 specialist feeding centres across Sudan to support the treatment of nearly 45,000 children suffering from severe malnutrition. This support including supplies of thereapeutic food and milk, as well as training of more than 600 health workers, and monitoring and surveillance activities.
Nearly 684,000 children and more than 382,000 women were provided with iodised oil capsules, as part of efforts to prevent iodine deficiency disorders.
Vitamin A supplementation efforts supported by UNICEF ensured that some 6.6 million children received vitamin A in 2008, along with nearly 186,000 mothers of new-born children.
More than 390,000 pregnant women also received iron and folic acid supplements, with the support of UNICEF.
In nine locations across the north of Sudan, UNICEF supported training of local health staff as part of a Baby-Friendy Hospital Initiative, with one hospital receiving baby-friendly certification during 2008.
Opportunities provided by World Breastfeeding Week, held in August, and the new Sudan Accelerated Child Survival Initiative also enabled a strategic focus on providing health and nutrition information to mothers about the importance of exclusing breastfeeding and other caring practices.

DILI, Timor-Leste, 20 January ...2017: The European Union (EU) extends its support to the Government of Timor-Leste to strengthen the Integrated Nutrition Project in Timor-Leste. Under the agreement, the EU will provide a further contribution to the Ministry of Health of the Government of Timor-Leste through UNICEF Euro 1.32 million and 720,000 to WFP to reach vulnerable children and families with high impact nutrition interventions. This grant is in addition to the Euro 4.2 million to UNICEF and 3 million Euro to WFP earlier allocated in March 2014.
The additional funding will allow scaling up the implementation of the Integrated Nutrition Project, currently in Dili, Ermera, Bobonaro, Covalima, Special Administrative Region of Oecusse and Ainaro municipalities, to all 12 municipalities and Oecusse- Special Administrative Region during 2017, benefiting around 200,000 children under five, and 94,000 pregnant and lactating women. This will be achieved through capacity building of health staff for nutrition service delivery, provision of health facilities with equipment and supplies, and capacity building for nutrition related behaviour change in the communities

Objectifs
Under Strategic Obje...ctive 1, it will : (i) maintain acceptable food security among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees ; (ii) ensure effective treatment of acute malnutrition among children aged 6–59 months and PLW in areas most affected by global acute malnutrition ; and (iii) maintain the food security of vulnerable households affected by natural disasters or conflict.
Under Strategic Objective 2 it will : (i) improve food security, self-reliance and income-generating opportunities among the most food-insecure populations ; (ii) help to reduce acute and chronic malnutrition and address micronutrient deficiencies by enhancing the feeding of young children, maternal nutrition and micronutrient intake among school-age children ; (iii) increase access to education, particularly for girls ; and (iv) enhance national capacities to address food and nutrition insecurity.
Under Strategic Objective 3 it will improve livelihoods and enhance resilience among food-insecure communities and households.
