The Australian Volunteers for ...International Development (AVID) program was launched by the Australian Government in May 2011. It was aimed at bringing together four separate and unaligned volunteer programs under a single Australian Government banner with unified program goal and objectives. The goal of the program is to contribute to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction and advance Australia's reputation and relationships in partner countries. AVID programme makes a considerable contribution to the achievement of the Government's public diplomacy objectives. Volunteers promote a positive perception of Australia in the region, and promote a positive perception of the aid program domestically. AVID also contributes to development outcomes and links the Australian community with people and organisations in developing countries.

The Regional Health Security T...echnical Reference Group (TRG) provides strategic advice to inform the priorities, policy and investment decisions of the initiative. The overarching goal of the Regional Health Security Initiative (the Initiative) is for health security to be improved as a result of increased leadership and stronger health systems. |
The AVID programme seeks to: build understanding of Australia's international role and commitment to integration with the Indo-Pacific region; increase the number of volunteers working to improve the economic livelihoods of people in developing countries; and develop volunteer assignments in priority areas of governance, health, social infrastructure and services and education. Funding under this initiative assists Scope Global's ongoing costs for implementation of the AVID program including volunteer allowance, recruitment, travel, insurance, management and other associated administrative costs. The total value of this investment is $147.8 million over 7 years, starting 2011-12.

Sport for development
Australi...a has successfully delivered sport for development programs since 2009 through its $49 million Australian Sports Outreach Program (ASOP).
Sport is a globally recognised - and increasingly utilised - vehicle to achieve development outcomes in areas such as health, social cohesion, gender equality and disability inclusion. The Australian Government strongly supports these outcomes through its targeted sport for development programs in the Asia-Pacific region.
Sport is a uniquely effective agent of change because:
• Participation in quality physical activity significantly reduces the risk of developing Non Communicable Disease (NCDs). NCDs such as diabetes have been identified as an urgent health and economic risk across Pacific Island countries, which feature in the world’s top ten countries with the highest rates of obesity (World Bank 2015).
• Sport provides governments and public health organisations a mass audience platform to deliver high-impact messaging on other health issues (e.g. HIV/AIDS, tobacco and alcohol).
• Sport fosters social cohesion through engaging with communities experiencing conflict, and by providing opportunities for disengaged groups within society such as youths.
• Sport supports equality of women and girls through showcasing achievement and challenging gender norms.
• Sport provides safe and supportive community spaces for women and minority groups in developing countries who are at an increased risk of experiencing violence.
• Sport helps improve the quality of life for people with disability by fostering inclusion and social interaction. This inclusion challenges negative community attitudes and self-perceptions of people with disability.

The Australian Volunteers for ...International Development (AVID) program provides effective contribution to development through Australian volunteers working with people and organisations in developing countries. Individual Australians contribute by undertaking assignments in a range of developing countries, helping to build capacity in host organisations which are focused on meeting development needs across sectors such as health, education, rural development, and law and justice. Funding under this initiative assists Australian Volunteers International (AVI) ongoing costs for implementing the AVID program covering volunteer allowances, recruitment, insurance, management and other associated administrative costs. The total value of this investment is $99.5 million over 6 years, starting 2011-12.

The initial value of this initiative was $20.0 million but was extended to incorporate a second phase, starting January 2015. RDP is implemented by the Solo...mon Islands Government (SIG) and partners are the Australian
Government, European Union, the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), the World
Bank, and, the communities from eight of the country’s provinces excluding Renbel. RDP has three main
components:
1. Local infrastructure and service delivery. Grants are provided to each ward for the construction or
rehabilitation of essential infrastructure, such as health posts, teachers' accommodation, water
supply and foot bridges. Projects are implemented by village-level committees.
2. Improved agriculture services. This provides essential equipment and training to SIG ministries to
improve capacity and services. Training and services provided are driven by demand at the local level,
with men and women farmers prioritising their own needs.
3. Rural business development. This facilitates growth and development to each province of rural
enterprises by providing supplementary equity-financing to rural businesses.
As at July 2014, across the provinces of Western, Choiseul, Malaita, Temotu, Isabel, Makira-Ulawa, Central
Islands and Guadalcanal, the following results have been achieved:
• Completed community projects are already benefitting 120,000 people — more than one in 10
Solomon Islanders. There has been a more than 90 percent increase in villages reporting satisfaction
with access to critical services including water supply, health centres, community halls and school
buildings.
• More than 37,000 farmers, nearly half of them women, from all 8 provinces received extension advice
or training in growing subsistence and commercial crops.
• Supplemental equity provided by RDP resulted in 58 businesses benefiting from increased access to
finance.
• The program is on track to provide assistance to some 300,000 people, more than half of the
country’s population. Program investments include water supply, classrooms, health aid posts, foot
bridges and community halls.
