This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries, (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations, and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en œuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. Grâce au projet, des innovations à faible coût qui ont recours à des technologies simples et qui ont le potentiel d'être distribuées à grande échelle avec succès seront mises en œuvre, elles font appel à des approches novatrices pour augmenter la prestation et la demande de services de santé locaux. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene, (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure, (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities, and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age. This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, with Children Believe Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. In Ethiopia, Amref Canada is collaborating with Amref Ethiopia and Children Believe Ethiopia, in Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, Amref Canada is working with their local offices. / Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile dans certaines communautés en travaillant avec les autorités sanitaires locales, en soutenant l'utilisation de l'approche intégrée axée sur la santé, la nutrition, et l'eau, l'assainissement et l'hygiène. This project aims to serve chi...ldren less than five years of age with vitamin A supplementation and de-worming programs in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya. The mortality rate for children less than five years of age is 73/1000 live births in Kenya and 108/1000, in Côte d'Ivoire, in 2015. Vitamin A deficiency and worm infection causes and worsens malnutrition, anemia and diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, which are a leading cause of death for children less than five years of age in these countries. Currently, these services are provided in both countries through schools, leaving children younger than five years unreached, a gap which this project is addressing. This project is providing improved delivery of these essential health services in communities where the actual coverage for children under five years of age is low. Project activities include: (1) increasing access to vitamin A and preventative de-worming treatments using existing community-based delivery systems, (2) strengthening the local health care system by training local health workers and community health volunteers in vitamin A supplementation and de-worming, (3) creating and utilizing a standardized toolkit for training on the implementation of responsive combined deworming and Vitamin A supplementation program targeting pre-school aged children, and (4) improving community engagement around vitamin A deficiency and de-worming in young children through responsive communication and engagement plans implementation as well as participatory activities with communities members, community leaderships and health structures and other gender equality and women's groups. This project is implemented in six regions of Côte d'Ivoire (Gneby-Tiassa-Me, Bélier, Bounkani-Gontougo, Gbeke, Gôh and Indenie Duablin) and in three counties of Kenya (Siaya, Kwale and Kilifi). Effect : hope partners with Vitamin Angels, a US-based NGO, who also provides in-kind contributions of albendazole (de-worming treatments) and vitamin A supplements for the duration of the project. For the first three years of the Project in Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire, the local implementing partner was the Medical Assistance Program (MAP) International. Due to a closure of MAP country offices, Helen Keller International will be implementing the project in both countries for the final year. This project directly impacts 1.8 million children and 16,600 adults working as community health workers or volunteers. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations./ Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international.Le projet soutient une approche régionale pour renforcer les systèmes de santé et d'éducation en engageant les agences partenaires du réseau de développement d'Aga Khan en Afrique et en Asie. The project aims to strengthen... health systems in the districts of Chitipa, Kasungu and Salima in Malawi, by working with local health authorities to improve water, sanitation, and medical waste management systems at health facilities, and through improved capacity of facility and community-based health workers to deliver gender-sensitive maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. Activities include: (1) training health workers on the full MNCH continuum of care, including SRHR and the importance of improved sanitation and hygiene as a key measure to prevent infection, (2) establishing and rehabilitating water supply systems, hand washing stations, and medical waste management systems at health facilities, (3) developing and implementing scorecards and other citizen engagement mechanisms to enable communities to communicate their healthcare needs to local government, and provide feedback on whether these needs are being met. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by CowaterSogema International, and includes Plan International Canada, in collaboration with Plan International Malawi, and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. / Le projet vise à renforcer les systèmes de santé des districts de Chitipa, Kasungu et Salima au Malawi, en travaillant avec les autorités locales de santé pour améliorer l'eau, l'assainissement et les systèmes de gestion des déchets médicaux des établissements de santé, et en améliorant la capacité des travailleurs de ces établissements et ceux des établissements de santé communautaire à donner des services de santé pour les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants (SMNE), et de la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR), tout en intégrant les principes d'égalité entre les sexes. Parmi les activités : 1) la formation des travailleurs de la santé dans le continuum de soins complets de SMNE, y compris la SDSR et l'importance d'améliorer la salubrité et l'hygiène comme mesure principale de prévention des infections, 2) l'établissement et la réhabilitation des systèmes d'approvisionnement en eau, des lavabos pour se laver les mains et des systèmes de gestion des déchets médicaux des établissements de santé, 3) la création et l'utilisation de feuilles de route ou autre mécanisme de mobilisation citoyenne pour permettre aux collectivités de communiquer au gouvernement local leurs besoins en matière de soins de santé et donner leur rétroaction à savoir si ces besoins sont réellement comblés. The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health in Mali. It supports the Ministry of Health of Mali in implementing the National Health and Social Development Program, especially making health services geographically and financially accessible, meeting demand, improving the quality of services, and building institutional capacity. As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Mali to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems, increasing donor coordination and harmonization, and strengthening mutual accountability. Sector-wide budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among CIDA, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. The initiative's expected results include a stronger health care system that better meets the needs of women, men, and children, improved prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhoea, respiratory diseases, and other infectious diseases targeted by an expanded program on immunization, and better nutrition for children under five and pregnant women. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project is one of two parts of a $64 million contribution. / Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Mali. Il fournit un soutien au ministère de la Santé du Mali à mettre en oeuvre son Programme national de développement sanitaire et social (PRODESS), plus particulièrement en ce qui concerne l'accessibilité géographique aux services de santé, l'accessibilité financière, le soutien à la demande, l'amélioration de la qualité des services et le renforcement des capacités institutionnelles. Comme c'est le cas pour toutes les initiatives d'appui budgétaire, le Canada travaille en étroite collaboration avec d'autres bailleurs de fonds et le gouvernement du Mali pour accroître l'efficacité de son aide, et ce, en mettant l'emphase sur la responsabilisation, la transparence et l'efficacité des systèmes nationaux, en accroissant la coordination et l'harmonisation entre les donateurs, et en renforçant la responsabilité mutuelle. This project aims to reduce il...lness and death among mothers, newborns and children in the province of Zambezia, the second most populous province with some of the highest maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates in Mozambique. The project aims to work directly with the Zambezia Provincial Directorate of Health to expand health services and improve the quality of care available to mothers, newborns and children. The project seeks to help the Zambezia Provincial Directorate of Health to better respond to the health needs of mothers, newborns and children, promote better health for mothers and higher survival rates for children, and reduce deaths from infectious diseases. The project also seeks to improve the management capacity of the Provincial Directorate so that it functions more efficiently, effectively and sustainably over the long term. / Ce projet vise à réduire la morbidité et la mortalité maternelle, néo-natale et infantile dans la province de Zambezia, la deuxième province la plus peuplée du Mozambique où les taux de mortalité et de morbidité maternelles et infantiles y sont parmi les plus élevés du pays. Ce projet vise à collaborer directement avec la Direction provinciale de la santé de Zambezia pour élargir l'offre de services en santé et améliorer la qualité des soins offerts aux mères, aux nouveau-nés et aux enfants. Le project vise à accroître la capacité de la Direction provinciale de la santé de Zambezia à répondre aux besoins en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants afin d'améliorer la santé maternelle, d'augmenter le taux de survie infantile et de réduire les décès dûs aux maladies infectieuses. Le projet prévoit également aider la Direction provinciale à améliorer sa capacité de gestion afin qu'elle fonctionne plus efficacement et qu'elle puisse ainsi obtenir des résultats durables.

This project aims to enhance i...nclusive democratic development in Burma/Myanmar by strengthening citizen engagement, deepening trust and understanding of democratic systems, and building the capacity of communities to participate in their own development. The project targets over 320 ,000 people in Burma/Myanmar and 110,000 Burmese refugees outside the country. Activities include: (1) organizing workshops on human rights, including women's rights, (2) training media workers from ethnic minority media organizations, (3) supporting the production of publications on key development issues (human rights, environmental protection, gender equality, etc.), (4) training community-level basic health workers to improve decentralized health service delivery, (5) supporting multi-stakeholder consultations to share experiences on participatory, community-based and decentralized health care delivery, (6) training refugees and internally displaced people in entrepreneurship, livelihood skills and democratic governance to facilitate reintegration into Burma/Myanmar, and (7) supporting small-scale locally-initiated projects in Burma/Myanmar to strengthen community capacity to implement development activities using democratic approaches. / Ce projet vise à accroître le développement démocratique inclusif en Birmanie/Myanmar en augmentant la participation des citoyens, en accroissant la confiance et la compréhension à l'égard des systèmes démocratiques et en renforçant la capacité des collectivités à participer à leur propre développement. Le projet vise plus de 320 000 personnes en Birmanie/Myanmar et 110 000 réfugiés birmans à l'extérieur du pays. Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) organiser des ateliers sur les droits de la personne, y compris les droits de la femme, 2) donner de la formation à des travailleurs des médias provenant d'organisations médiatiques de minorités ethniques, 3) appuyer la production de publications sur d'importantes questions de développement (notamment les droits de la personne, la protection de l'environnement et l'égalité entre les sexes), 4) donner de la formation à des travailleurs de la santé communautaire pour améliorer la prestation de services décentralisés de santé de base, 5) appuyer les consultations entre de multiples intervenants pour partager les expériences en matière de livraison de soins de santé communautaire, dans un cadre participatif et décentralisé, 6) donner une formation à des réfugiés et à des personnes déplacées à l'intérieur de leur propre pays sur l'entrepreneuriat, les compétences nécessaires pour assurer leur subsistance et la gouvernance démocratique afin de faciliter leur réintégration en Birmanie/Myanmar, 7) soutenir des projets locaux à petite échelle en Birmanie/Myanmar pour renforcer la capacité communautaire à mettre en œuvre des activités de développement à l'aide d'approches démocratiques.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries, (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations, and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en œuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. Grâce au projet, des innovations à faible coût qui ont recours à des technologies simples et qui ont le potentiel d'être distribuées à grande échelle avec succès seront mises en œuvre, elles font appel à des approches novatrices pour augmenter la prestation et la demande de services de santé locaux. Le projet vise aussi à explorer, à mettre à l'essai et à valider de nouveaux mécanismes financiers pour encourager une plus grande innovation et de meilleurs résultats en matière de santé. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations./ Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international.Le projet soutient une approche régionale pour renforcer les systèmes de santé et d'éducation en engageant les agences partenaires du réseau de développement d'Aga Khan en Afrique et en Asie.
