The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries, (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations, and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en œuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. Grâce au projet, des innovations à faible coût qui ont recours à des technologies simples et qui ont le potentiel d'être distribuées à grande échelle avec succès seront mises en œuvre, elles font appel à des approches novatrices pour augmenter la prestation et la demande de services de santé locaux. Le projet vise aussi à explorer, à mettre à l'essai et à valider de nouveaux mécanismes financiers pour encourager une plus grande innovation et de meilleurs résultats en matière de santé. The Afghanistan Reconstruction... Trust Fund (ARTF) was established in 2002 to respond to the need for a dependable and predictable mechanism to support the Government of Afghanistan's budget. The ARTF is critical to efforts to build a more functional and representative government system that successfully delivers services to Afghan citizens. The ARTF consists of two funding channels. (i) As the Government of Afghanistan's revenues are so far insufficient to cover its operating budget, the Recurrent Cost Window provides funding for salaries for non-uniformed government employees and for operating and maintenance (O&M) expenditures, to enable the Government of Afghanistan to undertake delivery and administration of essential services. (ii) The Investment Window provides funding for priority programs in agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, human development, and public sector capacity and governance. The ARTF is administered by the World Bank in close consultation with the Government of Afghanistan and donors. Through the Recurrent Cost Window, expenses claimed by the Government of Afghanistan must meet eligibility criteria established by the World Bank and be verified by an independent, international, third-party monitoring agent before being reimbursed by the ARTF. As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with the World Bank, other donors, and the Government of Afghanistan to promote effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; to increase donor coordination and harmonization; and to strengthen mutual accountability. Budget support initiatives also foster greater policy dialogue among donors, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts towards effective, focussed aid and long-term development results. CIDA has been contributing to the ARTF Recurrent Cost Window since 2002. As of March 2011, CIDA has disbursed a total of $280.5 million to the Recurrent Cost Window. /Le Fonds d'affectation spéciale pour la reconstruction de l'Afghanistan a été créé en 2002 pour répondre au besoin de l'établissement d'un mécanisme fiable et prévisible pouvant appuyer le budget du gouvernement de l'Afghanistan. The Afghanistan Reconstruction... Trust Fund (ARTF) was established in 2002, and is administered by the World Bank to respond to the need for a dependable and predictable mechanism to support the Government of Afghanistan's budget. ARTF is the main multi-donor trust fund for international development assistance to enable national Afghan programs and service delivery. It supports the non-security, recurrent operational expenditures of the Afghan government, and provides grant financing for economic and social development priorities through a number of National Priority Programs. Canada, along with other donors, supports ARTF's recurrent cost window and investment programs in health, education, and women, adolescent girls' and girls' rights and empowerment. This project is pivotal to increasing the self-reliance of the Afghan government to deliver basic services to its people. The ARTF supports national priority programs including education, health, agriculture, rural development, infrastructure and governance. / Le Fonds fiduciaire pour la reconstruction de l'Afghanistan [en anglais : Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF)] a été créé en 2002, et est géré par la Banque mondiale pour répondre au besoin d'un mécanisme fiable et prévisible pouvant appuyer le budget du gouvernement de l'Afghanistan. The goal of this project is to... reduce malnutrition by addressing the basic nutritional needs of women and children Afghanistan. It expands the existing project scope of the Improving Nutrition for Mothers, Newborns, and Children project from six provinces (Bamyan, Daikundi, Faryab, Kandahar, Jawzjan, and Sari Pul) to nine, including three new provinces (Takhar, Kunduz, and Nangarhar). The project seeks to increase the nutrition services provided for mothers, newborns, and children at health facilities and within the community. These services include providing micronutrient supplements, promoting better feeding practices for infants and young children, monitoring growth, and managing acute malnutrition. The project increases awareness and knowledge of the nutritional needs of mothers, newborns, and children within the community by providing training for family health action groups, community health committees, and religious and community leaders. The project also provides training for the organizations that deliver basic health services and for the staff of the Ministry of Public Health. This training covers general maternal, newborn, and child health issues; the Health Management Information System; and general management practices, including monitoring and evaluation. Finally, the project conducts practical research on integrating the management of severe acute malnutrition into existing national nutrition programs. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn, and child health commitment. /Ce projet a pour but de réduire la malnutrition en répondant aux besoins fondamentaux des femmes et des enfants en matière de nutrition en Afghanistan. Il élargit la portée actuelle du projet Améliorer la nutrition des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de six provinces (Bamyan, Daikundi, Faryab, Kandahar, Jawzjan et Sari Pul) à neuf, dont trois nouvelles provinces (Takhar, Kunduz et Nangarhar). The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). Pendant la première phase, GDC verse de petites subventions aux innovateurs afin qu'ils puissent faire de la recherche et formuler des idées prometteuses et novatrices pour régler les problèmes liés à la SMNE. La seconde phase comprend la mise à l'essai des innovations, l'établissement de partenariats stratégiques, l'obtention de fonds et de savoir-faire du secteur privé ainsi que la conception de plans d'affaires et de marketing afin de poursuivre le perfectionnement. This project aims to support a... range of countries experiencing fragility, conflict, and violence to improve the quality and gender-responsiveness of their education systems and better address the health-related barriers that impede girls' and adolescent girls' access to quality education and learning, including for those with disabilities. This project is implemented by the World Bank in collaboration with the Global Financing Facility (GFF). The GFF is a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing for health, nutrition and education. Addressing education and learning challenges in countries facing fragility, conflict, and violence requires building on the inherent linkages between education and health. Access to school, quality instruction and learning materials are necessary but insufficient to achieve good learning outcomes. Children and adolescents need to be healthy to take full advantage of the education opportunities provided, and education is a key determinant of health outcomes. As a result of poor health, children miss an estimated 500 million days of school in low- and lower-middle income countries each year. This project supports GFF countries affected by fragility, conflict, and violence to improve education outcomes for girls and adolescent girls by: 1. Reducing health-related barriers that impede access for girls to education: Efforts to reduce barriers focus on scaling up the delivery of health programs in schools that target girls and adolescent girls with a package of health and nutrition services that have been demonstrated to reduce health-related barriers to education and improve enrollment, attendance and retention. Health interventions include for example, school-based malaria prevention, feeding/micronutrient supplementation, vaccinations, deworming, vision screening, and comprehensive sexuality education. These efforts can improve child and adult survival, reduce early and mistimed pregnancy, reduce childhood stunting, improve access to quality and equitable primary and secondary education, and strengthen the foundational skills necessary to enter and adapt to an evolving workforce. 2. Investing in coordinated, innovative, quality gender-responsive education systems: Countries benefiting from this project who commit to allocating a portion of their World Bank financing (loans from the International Development Association (IDA)) to education priorities in their county unlock GFF Trust Fund resources at a set ratio of 5 to 1. For example, $50 million of IDA loans allocated to education unlocks $10 million from the GFF Trust Fund. This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. A fundamental rural developmen...t need in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Senegal is the lack of relevant, gender-responsive and timely information, communication and extension services for small-scale farmers (women, men and youth). To address this issue, Farm Radio International (FRI) aims to scale up interactive rural radio in 17 regions of Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Ghana, reaching 61 radio stations and engaging at least 70 stakeholder groups including farmer-based and women's organizations. Project activities include: (1) providing relevant, timely and gender-responsive information on: effective, climate-smart agriculture; climate adaptation; gender-equality; and improved nutritional practices; (2) deepening knowledge exchanges between women, poor, and vulnerable small-scale farmers in rural areas to identify and address their respective needs using mobile tools; and (3) strengthening evidence-based decision at the community level and provide stakeholder groups with access to compiled outcome data on food-security, agriculture and gender-equality. It is expected that this project impacts up to 7.3 million small-scale farmers, including an estimated 2.3 million women small-scale farmers in the four targeted countries. Farm Radio International implements this project in partnership with FRI-Burkina Faso, FRI-Mali, FRI-Senegal, FRI-Ghana and CECI/Uniterra (Senegal). /L'un des besoins fondamentaux sur le plan du développement rural au Burkina Faso, au Ghana, au Mali et au Sénégal concerne le manque de services d'information, de communication et d'extension pertinents, visant l'égalité entre les sexes et rapides, pour les petits exploitants agricoles femmes, hommes et jeunes. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. This project aims to help stre...ngthen communities in under-served areas by improving education, vocational training and health care, and by developing local businesses. Project activities include: (1) provide equipment and training to improve schools and teaching; (2) increase access to quality healthcare and services, and develop local businesses and community networks; (3) provide better instructions and learning material for teachers, trainers, schools and students, especially women and girls; (4) provide local health providers and community members with improved equipment and health service delivery; and (5) provide training to local businesses including women entrepreneurs and farmers with improved business skills and micro-finance. /Ce projet vise à renforcer les collectivités de régions mal desservies en améliorant l'éducation, la formation professionnelle et les soins de santé, et en contribuant à la création d'entreprises locales. Toward More Equitable Primary ...Health Care in Argentina and Latin America through Intersectoral Approaches

Improving primary health care ...for everyone requires an effort that extends beyond the formal health sector. This project will examine the value of intersectoral collaborations at the primary healthcare level to generate practical guidance and a theoretical understanding of how these arrangements can influence health equity in Argentina and Latin America. Intersectoral efforts in the healthcare industry are projects and programs involving multiple sectors working together to improve health and well-being. This requires collaboration and coordination between the formal health sector and other sectors such as social welfare, education, environment, transportation, justice, sanitation, and industry. The World Health Organization, regional bodies, and national and subnational health authorities are increasingly promoting intersectoral approaches that examine the range of social determinants of health that influence access to primary health care. The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, live, work, and age. The distribution of money, power, and resources shape these determinants. While researchers have explored the benefits of intersectoral collaborations in health, there is limited practical guidance on how to establish and evaluate these activities. More evidence is needed to understand how these collaborations influence health equity. In the Santa Fe province of Argentina, the Ministry of Health has identified intersectoral collaboration as a priority. Santa Fe primary care health workers and managers are creating grassroots linkages with other sectors to facilitate their work. This convergence of political and operational interest in intersectoral partnerships at the provincial and municipal levels is critical to this project. The project team is composed of researchers and decision-makers. They will collect primary and secondary data using literature reviews, existing population health databases, and key informant interviews. Research outputs will include scientific papers and policy briefs describing achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. The team will build a virtual Latin American community of practice focused on intersectoral collaborations for health. Findings will be integrated into course curricula for a master's in health systems and services management and a certificate in intersectoral primary health care management offered by Rosario University. This research is expected to expand the knowledge base of proven practices to advance greater intersectoral collaboration in Santa Fe province and other parts of the region.

The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). Pendant la première phase, GDC verse de petites subventions aux innovateurs afin qu'ils puissent faire de la recherche et formuler des idées prometteuses et novatrices pour régler les problèmes liés à la SMNE. Le projet s'intéresse particulièrement à la seconde phase de la plateforme d'innovation de Grands Défis Canada, qui comprend la réalisation d'essais et de projets pilotes relatifs aux innovations, l'établissement de partenariats stratégiques, la mise à profit du financement et du savoir-faire du secteur privé ainsi que des plans d'affaire et de marketing pour poursuivre le développement de ces innovations. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations. /Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international. This project provides comprehe...nsive livelihood support for communities, particularly women, girls and young adolescents, living in the host communities affected by the influx of over 740,000 displaced Rohingya people in Cox's Bazar since August 2017. Cox's Bazar is one of Bangladesh's poorest and most vulnerable districts, with the poverty rate well above the national average. Even before the influx, 33% of the host community population lived below the poverty line and 17% below the extreme poverty line. The arrival of the refugees has increased the supply of labour in the affected areas, driving down wages and increasing competition in the labour market, with a particular impact on the poorest host community households including those whose primary source of income is day labour. The influx has also put immense pressure on the availability and delivery of essential health services which were already scarce and overstretched. Women and girls, and women-headed households, are particularly vulnerable in this situation, including to gender-based violence which is likely to increase in times of economic stress. The project is designed to meet the immediate needs of the affected host communities in selected sub-districts in Cox's Bazar, while building skills, resilience and awareness to facilitate their long-term well-being. With a focus on empowering and girls, the objective is to lift the most affected host communities out of poverty through a program that combines livelihoods, social safety nets, financial inclusion and social integration. Activities include: providing grants and related support to ultra-poor women for income generation activities such as home gardening and poultry-rearing; ; improving household food consumption; employment-linked apprenticeship training for out-of-school youth and adolescents (male and female); facilitating production and retailing of traditional clothing materials by women artisans; and targeted training of community health workers and midwives to help address the essential health needs of the most vulnerable host communities. The activities are expected to directly benefit over 10,000 women and young adults and reach over 200,000 members of their households. /Ce projet vise à offrir un soutien à la subsistance complet aux personnes, en particulier les femmes, les filles et les adolescents, qui vivent dans les communautés hôtes de Cox's Bazar touchées par l'afflux de plus de 740 000 Rohingyas déplacés depuis août 2017. Cox's Bazar est un des districts les plus pauvres et les plus vulnérables du Bangladesh; le taux de pauvreté y est beaucoup plus élevé que la moyenne nationale. This project aims to strengthe...n income generation and promote maternal and child health, nutrition, hygiene, access to services, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in 14 municipalities in Chuquisaca, Bolivia. The project beneficiaries are primarily rural and indigenous women and men and municipal governments. Project activities include: (1) support for increasing family enterprise profitability; (2) adopting good health practices related to maternal and child health and SRHR; and (3) strengthening municipal governance in health and local economic development through improved management, coordination and leadership. Empowering rural and indigenous women in economic enterprise management is an important objective of the project. /Ce projet vise à renforcer la création de revenus, ainsi qu'à promouvoir la santé maternelle et infantile, la nutrition, l'hygiène, l'accès aux services et la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR) dans 14 municipalités de Chuquisaca, en Bolivie. Les bénéficiaires du projet sont principalement des femmes et des hommes issus de communautés autochtones et de communautés rurales, ainsi que les administrations municipales. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) le soutien visant à accroître la rentabilité des entreprises familiales; 2) l'adoption de pratiques d'hygiène exemplaires liées à la santé maternelle et infantile et à la SDSR; 3) le renforcement de la gouvernance municipale en matière de santé et de développement économique local en améliorant la gestion, la coordination et le leadership. Le renforcement du pouvoir des femmes et des hommes issus de communautés autochtones et de communautés rurales en matière de gestion économique des entreprises constitue l'un des objectifs importants du projet.

The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). In April 2016, Burkina Faso be...came the first African country to introduce a national policy for universal and free healthcare for pregnant women, new mothers, and children under five. However, maternal and child mortality rates in the country remain unacceptably high, and maternal and child healthcare services in many parts of the country remain limited in coverage and quality.This project examines how this policy is being implemented in different districts and provides grounded recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness of, and adherence to, the policy. Specifically, the project will analyze existing health information system data and related data collection practices to optimize how the policy is being monitored and evaluated; identify and investigate causes for variations in costing within and among districts; and evaluate the effects of the policy on women's ability to make decisions related to their sexual and reproductive health, including family planning. It is expected to support current efforts to examine and scale up innovative health interventions in Mali and Burkina Faso. This will provide relevant and useful information for decision-makers at national and local levels to maximize gains in positive health outcomes and reduce economic and other inefficiencies. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project aims to help stre...ngthen communities in under-served areas by improving education, vocational training and health care, and by developing local businesses. Project activities include: (1) provide equipment and training to improve schools and teaching; (2) increase access to quality healthcare and services, and develop local businesses and community networks; (3) provide better instructions and learning material for teachers, trainers, schools and students, especially women and girls; (4) provide local health providers and community members with improved equipment and health service delivery; and (5) provide training to local businesses including women entrepreneurs and farmers with improved business skills and micro-finance. /Ce projet vise à renforcer les collectivités de régions mal desservies en améliorant l'éducation, la formation professionnelle et les soins de santé, et en contribuant à la création d'entreprises locales. Parmi les activités du projet : fournir de l'équipement et une formation pour améliorer les écoles et l'enseignement; 2) élargir l'accès à des services et à des soins de santé de qualité, et créer des entreprises locales et des réseaux communautaires; 3) fournir une formation et des documents d'apprentissage de plus grande qualité aux enseignants, aux formateurs, aux écoles et aux élèves, particulièrement aux femmes et aux filles; 4) offrir aux fournisseurs de soins de santé locaux et aux membres des collectivités un équipement et des services de santé améliorés; 5) offrir une formation aux entreprises locales, notamment donner une formation aux entrepreneures et aux agricultrices sur le microfinancement et de meilleures compétences en entrepreneuriat.

The project aims to reduce chi...ld mortality in targeted regions benefitting an estimated 452,345 women and 3,740,379 children. Substantial progress has been made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality. Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies. This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. /Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité infantile dans les régions ciblées et à venir en aide à quelque 452 345 femmes et 3 740 379 enfants. Des progrès importants ont été accomplis en vue d'atteindre l'Objectif du Millénaire pour le développement relatif à la réduction de la mortalité chez les enfants et à l'amélioration de la santé maternelle. Toutefois, ces progrès dissimulent souvent le fait qu'il existe des inégalités grandissantes dans certains pays ou certaines régions. Ce projet a pour objectif de corriger les inégalités et les écarts en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) en donnant la priorité aux interventions considérées comme essentielles pour accélérer les progrès en vue de réduire la mortalité infantile. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) effectuer des recherches afin d'étudier les besoins des mères et des enfants en matière de santé et de trouver des solutions pour y répondre; 2) examiner et parfaire les politiques et les lignes directrices existantes pour améliorer la SMNE; 3) élaborer et offrir de la formation sur les interventions axées sur l'égalité entre les sexes en matière de SMNE, sur les systèmes d'établissement des statistiques de l'état civil et d'enregistrement des faits d'état civil et sur les systèmes de gestion de l'information sur la santé; 4) mettre à l'essai et mettre en place des modèles visant à combler les écarts en SMNE; 5) élaborer et réaliser des campagnes de sensibilisation communautaire afin de mieux faire connaître les interventions en SMNE; 6) obtenir et distribuer des fournitures de santé essentielles. Ce projet s'inscrit dans l'engagement pris par le Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants.

Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). Pendant la première phase, GDC verse de petites subventions aux innovateurs afin qu'ils puissent faire de la recherche et formuler des idées prometteuses et novatrices pour régler les problèmes liés à la SMNE. La seconde phase comprend la mise à l'essai des innovations, l'établissement de partenariats stratégiques, l'obtention de fonds et de savoir-faire du secteur privé ainsi que la conception de plans d'affaires et de marketing afin de poursuivre le perfectionnement. Au cours de cette phase, des fonds sont accordés à des innovateurs canadiens et de pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire qui ont présenté leurs travaux en matière d'innovation et dont les projets sont prêts à être utilisés par le secteur privé, des organisations internationales et les gouvernements de pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire. Plus de 300 innovations pendant la première phase et jusqu'à 100 innovations pendant la seconde phase seront mises en œuvre sur 10 ans.
