Nutrition Trust Fund
|
In line with the Nutrition Cap...acity Strengthening Plan (NCSP), this funding will be allocated to three pillars - 1) Country Demonstration Models, 2) Assessment and M&E, and 3) Research. The funding will build on earlier contributions from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in these three areas and is aligned with BMZ's plan for strong cooperation for better food security and nutrition.

The Nutrition Capacity Strengt...hening Plan (NCSP), managed through a multi-donor trust fund, supported roll-out of the nutrition policy in nine countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Kenya, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Madagascar, the Niger, South Sudan, the Sudan and Uganda. The NCSP has five strategic pillars: i) partnerships, advocacy and national capacity development on nutrition; ii) improved nutrition capacity, knowledge and skills; iii) improved nutrition analysis and monitoring and evaluation (M&E); iv) improved access to a nutritious diet, and nutrition products that meet safety and quality standards; and v) contributions to the global evidence base for nutrition.

The SRC's overall goal is to c...ontribute to healthy and safe living for vulnerable groups and communities. Since access to quality health care services remains a key factor for good health, the SRC promotes both supply and demand side of local health systems. As healthy living also depends on the environment, SRC focuses on health determinants such as water, sanitation, nutrition and health literacy. Adressing risks and disasters, SRC programmes encompass disaster risk reduction measures and foster community resilience.

Direct Aid Program: Small Gran...ts Program 2017-18
more
|
The Direct Aid Program (DAP) i...s a small-grants scheme administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) through Australia's diplomatic posts in developing countries. DAP's objective is to advance developmental outcomes in ODA-eligible countries with projects primarily focussed on practical and tangible results. In 2017-18 Australia supported over 800 DAP projects in around 110 countries. DAP supports local community efforts towards poverty reduction and engages a wide range of partners including non-government organisations, community groups, schools, health facilities and local governments. Projects helped people with disabilities, provided small-scale infrastructure, encouraged community income generation and improved people's health. The total value of this multi-country initiative is $22 million expensed over the 2017-18 financial year.

Preventing Recourse to Unsafe ...Abortion - supporting locally led initiatives
more

To enable locally led initiati...ves for improving services delivery, undertaking research, and addressing barriers to safe abortion, through small grants to non-governmental organisations.
more
|
Funding for Rounds 2 & 3 has d...elivered the following results to which DFID has contributed 25% of investment:
• 439,388 women received comprehensive abortion care (CAC) or post abortion care (PAC); 26%
of whom were aged 19 or younger – demonstrating grantees ability to reach this particularly vulnerable
and hard to reach group. At the time of writing the business case for this investment it was expected that
services would be delivered to 500,000 women
• Post abortion contraception uptake increased from 27% at the beginning of Round 2 to 72% in 2016. • During Rounds 2 and 3 grantees in 33 countries took steps toward improved legislation, policy and services; a further two grantees (in Swaziland and Congo), whose projects are still running are expected to report changes during 2017 - meeting the expectation set out. The programme will improve mar...ket functioning and address supply side barriers to delivering affordable, quality reproductive health commodities, such as poor co-ordination of funders and procurers, and increase supplies security through for example reducing stockouts at country level through civil society advocacy. The intervention will contribute to preventing over 30 million unintended pregnancies, and over 50,000 women’s deaths, as well as making global savings worth over $350 million from 2013 to 2018, through its contribution to convening funding, procurement and forecasting efforts to meet implant demand and volume guarantees. To improve nutrition by provid...ing treatment of malnutrition, including community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), vitamin A supplementation and deworming, and promotion of improved infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. This will benefit 6.2 million children under five across five states (Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, Yobe) in northern Nigeria. This will reduce the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight by at least 4% over the 6 year period. This will contribute towards our MDGs targets by achieving a 43% reduction in childhood mortality (220/1000 live births to 125/1000 live births) in Nigeria.

WINNN continues to deliver an ...effective nutrition programme that increasingly:
- Raises the profile of nutrition in Nigeria at Federal level and in the five states in which the programme is active.
- Supports access by women and children across the five intervention states to essential micro-nutrients, de-worming and improved treatment of diahorrea.
- Enables women to adopt key nutrition practices related to their under-2 year old children including improved hygiene, exclusive breast feeding in the first six months, provision of a balanced diet for weaned children and attractive presentation of appetising food.
- Supports an effective model of CMAM (community management of acute malnutrition) care for appropriately diagnosed children in selected LGAs (local government areas) in the intervention states.
- Advocates for government resources for improved nutrition to be budgeted and released alongside other key health interventions, with some success.
- Makes available reliable operational research findings related to nutrition that are highly relevant and of value across Nigeria and in many other countries facing similar problems.

Guttmacher Institute is a lead...ing research and policy organization committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights. DFID is supporting the Guttmacher Institute to carry out a programme of research, evidence generation and dissemination for examining the costs and benefits of meeting unmet needs for reproductive, maternal and neonatal health (RMNH) in developing countries. The intended impact of this programme is to increase financing and policy commitments for reproductive, maternal and neonatal health (RMNH) in developing countries. The programme aims to achieve this by making an evidence-based case for increased investments and improved policies. The UK's investment in Guttmacher supports the institute to produce research and evidence to inform the provision of better quality services in developing countries.
