BORESHA AFYA PROJECT
|
Boresha Afya Project
|
USAID Boresha Afya's vision is... to catalyze the capacity of the Government of Tanzania (GOT) to realize their vision for integrated health services that take advantage of every health care entry point to reach clients with an array of comprehensive, high-quality services, with a primary focus, especially for women and youth, on reproductive, malaria, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent and health (RM2NCAH) outcomes. USAID BORESHA AFYA will strengthen existing platforms by building on a base of assets across the continuum of care to improve quality and support comprehensive services with bold, smart, targeted initiatives that concentrate on geographic areas with the highest need and largest potential to achieve wide coverage and increased outcomes. The strategy focuses on district ownership, where districts are the primary functional units to enable accelerated access to high-quality, comprehensive integrated services at all points of care.

This research project aims to ...generate knowledge on adolescents' perceptions of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and the relevant needs among Palestinian refugee camp dwellers in West Bank and Jordan. The study will address a critical health system gap of SRH services and information from a rights-based perspective provided to adolescents in these settings. The project will address this gap by designing an intervention to expand SRH services to unmarried young and adolescent girls which are currently offered only to married girls and women by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) health department in refugee camps. The study will use mixed methods to design, implement and evaluate the intervention to address those needs as well as strengthen local capacity in research. Project outcomes will include improving SRH services by expanding their scope through implementation and evaluation of the intervention within existing UNRWA's service structures. A capacity strengthening component will train the research team at doctoral level and enhance capacity of UNRWA staff in conducting research. The expected knowledge products include reports and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as relevant policy briefs. The project will be carried out by Birzeit University in collaboration with UNRWA as the implementation partner in this project. UNRWA has decades of experience in refugee health services and is committed to long-term development of programming and services in adolescent SRH. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

Reducing Early Marriage of Ado...lescent Syrian Refugees in Lebanon: Improving Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Information and Services
more
|
This project seeks to address ...the challenge of early marriage among adolescent Syrian refugees in Lebanon by enhancing access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services. A community-oriented, rights-based multi-sectoral intervention will be designed, implemented and evaluated in the town of Bar Elias to generate a better understanding of how factors such as access to SRH information and services, education and economic opportunities influence early marriage outcomes and/or protect adolescent girls who are already married. The intervention will focus on in- and out-of-school Syrian refugee girls who are at risk of early marriage (ages 11-14), their mothers and young Syrian men in the same communities. Early married girls under 18 will also be involved in the study as a way to encourage legal marriage registration and prevent negative sexual and reproductive health consequences.Although the average age of marriage in the Arab world has risen, the rates of early marriage remain high, especially in conflict-affected areas and among displaced populations. Early marriage leads to negative health and social consequences for adolescent girls, ranging from risky early pregnancies, higher rates of school dropout, decreased social mobility, limited legal rights, reduced access to SRH information and services, limited autonomy on decision-making for issues of family planning, and higher risk of gender-based violence. The project will apply mixed methods and participatory approaches alongside the community to develop and evaluate changes in school attendance, level of knowledge about puberty and menstruation among unmarried adolescent girls, access to SRH information and services among married adolescent girls, gender empowerment and agency, and how many girls are getting married before 18. Findings will be shared at different stages of the project through community meetings, policy and practice briefs, academic publications and dialogues at local, national and regional levels. This proposal represents one of nine selected as a cohort of implementation research projects spanning two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and two thematic topics (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

This project aims to empower y...oung women and girls to exercise their rights to make free and informed choices about their sexuality and well-being in Bolivia, Kenya and Togo. The project partner, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), is a federation of Member Associations (MAs). The IPPF has identified 3 MAs to become Centres of Excellence over the course of the project. The project supports the establishment of these three Centres of Excellence in Bolivia, Kenya and Togo for gender-integrated and rights-based youth-centred sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) programs for the Latin American, Anglophone and Francophone African regions. The project enables the three International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Member Associations to: 1) improve access to comprehensive sexuality education programs and SRH services that are gender-integrated, rights-based and youth centred; 2) improve the quality of CSE programs so that they are rights-based and gender equality-focused including information on how to address harmful gender norms, providing tools for girls and young women to be empowered in their relationships; and reducing incidence of early marriage and pregnancy; and 3) develop the capacity of the IPPF Member Associations to support regional programming that is rights-based and youth-centred, as part of their capacity as a Center of Excellence. These efforts aim to decrease risks to young women, improve their sexual and reproductive health and rights, and enhance their life opportunities.

THE ECONOMICS OF INTERVENTIONS... TO IMPROVE ADOLESCENT AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH INTERVENTIONS IN SELECTED WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES
more
|
The economics of interventions... to improve adolescent and reproductive health interventions in selected West African countries
more
|
Decisions made during adolesce...nce have a significant impact on health and overall well-being in later life. Early onset of sexual activity and poor access to information and services have created new vulnerabilities to sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and unplanned pregnancy. Experts argue that a global grand convergence in health in all countries by 2030 (reducing infectious disease, child, and maternal mortality rates to those found in the best-performing middle-income countries) can be achieved by tackling preventable and treatable adolescent health issues. To achieve this global grand convergence, national governments have a critical role to play in supporting multi-level and multi-component intersectoral actions at different levels, from the household to community settings, schools, and health services. Although a few West African countries have made plans to address and improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes, there is a lack of information about the cost, necessary resources, and requirements for scaling up the planned interventions. Given that government health budgets in Africa remain low, using this information to make the economic case for improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health will be key to mobilizing ongoing domestic resources to sustainably finance interventions and to improve the implementation environment. This project will undertake a detailed situation analysis of national government strategies and policies on adolescent health in selected Francophone and Anglophone countries. Cost estimations, resource needs, and funding gaps will then be undertaken for promising interventions that are identified regionally and nationally. Finally, effective advocacy will be developed along with innovative and sustainable resource mobilization strategies for financing effective adolescent sexual and reproductive health interventions. The project aims to strengthen the generation and application of a quality evidence base about feasible and cost-effective adolescent sexual and reproductive health interventions. It will also contribute to stakeholder processes to influence policy and practice around ensuring availability of required resources. The project will be implemented by the Ghana-based African Health Economics and Policy Association.

REDUCING EARLY MARRIAGE OF ADO...LESCENT SYRIAN REFUGEES IN LEBANON: IMPROVING ACCESS TO SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH INFORMATION AND SERVICES

Reducing early marriage of ado...lescent Syrian refugees in Lebanon: Improving access to sexual and reproductive health information and services
more
|
Although the average age of ma...rriage in the Arab world has risen, rates of early marriage remain high, especially in conflict-affected areas and among displaced populations. Early marriage leads to negative health and social consequences for adolescent girls, including risky early pregnancies, higher rates of school dropout, decreased social mobility, limited legal rights, reduced access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services, limited autonomy on decision-making on family planning, and higher risk of gender-based violence. This project, implemented by the American University of Beirut, seeks to address the challenge of early marriage among adolescent Syrian refugees in Lebanon by enhancing access to SRH information and services. A community-oriented, rights-based multi-sectoral intervention will be designed, implemented, and evaluated in the town of Bar Elias. Its aim is to generate a better understanding of how factors such as access to SRH information and services, education, and economic opportunities influence early marriage outcomes and/or protect adolescent girls who are already married. The intervention will focus on Syrian refugee girls who are at risk of early marriage (ages 11-14), their mothers, and young Syrian men in the same communities. Married girls under 18 will also be involved in the study as a way to encourage legal marriage registration and prevent negative sexual and reproductive health consequences. The project will work with the community to develop and evaluate changes in school attendance, level of knowledge about puberty and menstruation among unmarried adolescent girls, access to SRH information and services among married adolescent girls, gender empowerment and agency, and how many girls are getting married before 18. Findings will be shared at different stages of the project through community meetings, policy and practice briefs, academic publications, and dialogues at local, national and regional levels. This proposal represents one of nine selected projects spanning two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and two thematic topics (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

|
|

Reproductive health needs of P...alestinian refugee camp girl adolescents: From evidence to policy
more
|
This project aims to generate ...knowledge on adolescents' perceptions of and requirements for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services among Palestinian refugee camp dwellers in the West Bank and Jordan. SRH services are currently offered only to married girls and women by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)'s health department. The project will address this critical gap by designing an intervention to expand SRH services to unmarried young and adolescent girls using a rights-based perspective. The study will use mixed methods to design, implement, and evaluate the intervention and it will also train the research team at UNRWA. This will expand the scope of SRH services within existing UNRWA service structures and enhance the capacity of UNRWA staff to conduct research. The expected knowledge products include reports and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as relevant policy briefs. The project will be carried out by Birzeit University, located in the West Bank, in collaboration with UNRWA. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

The project aims to strengthen... the capacities of adolescent girls and young women, and the broader education system that supports them. The project targets socio-economic barriers that are worsened by the lingering crisis in Zimbabwe, prohibiting girls' sustained engagement in secondary education and/or training, and their successful transition into adulthood. Project activities include: (1) establishing mechanisms to spread awareness and information campaigns such as Social Analysis Actions groups and peer platforms; (2) facilitating safe spaces in schools and communities for girls to discuss adolescent sexual reproductive health; (3) developing a women and girls mentorship program and network for career, academic, psychosocial, and leadership support; and (4) strengthening advocacy skills and capacities for girls and boys to engage school authorities' response to their needs and rights, including those of girls and boys with disabilities. The project works to bring together the school community system (schools, school development committees, parents, women and male learners, local leaders, authorities at the local and national levels) to define their own vision and plan for building resilient schools and systems relevant to the Zimbabwean context that are risk aware, safe, and innovative. This project works in partnership with the Coady Institute, which is committed to reducing poverty and transforming societies by strengthening local economies, by building resilient communities, and by promoting social accountability and good governance.

Project activities include: (1) establishing mechanisms to spread awareness and information campaigns such as Social Analysis Actions groups and peer platforms, (2) facilitating safe spaces in schools and communities for girls to discuss adolescent sexual reproductive health, (3) developing a women and girls mentorship program and network for career, academic, psychosocial, and leadership support, and (4) strengthening advocacy skills and capacities for girls and boys to engage school authorities' response to their needs and rights, including those of girls and boys with disabilities.
