To provide support to BRAC's d...evelopment programmes to improve access to quality basic services (health, education, water and sanitation), help the poorest, most marginalised people across the whole of Bangladesh graduate from extreme poverty, support inclusive growth and help build effective formal and informal institutions. UK support will include: helping over 950,000 children (600,000 girls) gain a decent education; providing additional nutritional support to 11 million people (7 million women and girls); helping 5.7 million girls and women gain access to family planning services; providing at least 75,000 people with sustainable access to clean water and sanitation; and lifting 240,000 women and their families (over 960,000 people) out of extreme poverty.

Basic Nutrition (to children u...n der 5 and pregnant women): 8%. Family Planning: 7% (BGD 204916-101 Strategic Partnership Arrangement II between DFID and BRAC). Expected results: UK funding of BRAC will deliver large scale results against the UK Government’s manifesto commitments and UK Aid Strategy priorities. The following indicative UK attributed results are estimated:
• Help over 950,000 children (600,000 girls) gain a decent education;
• Provide a package of nutrition specific interventions to 3 million women with additional nutritional support to 11 million people (7 million women and girls);
• 130,000 additional adolescent girls and women using methods of family planning, with a further 5.7 million gaining access to family planning services;
• Provide at least 75,000 people with sustainable access to clean water and sanitation;
• Lift 240,000 women and their families (over 960,000 people) out of extreme poverty;
• Provide at least 200,000 people with skills training, including 100,000 women and girls, 20,000 people with disabilities and youth from disadvantaged groups;
• Support over 80,000 women to better cope with the effects of climate change;
• Help at least 280,000 people strengthen resilience by increasing food security and building resilient livelihoods and enterprises.

To improve the lives of at lea...st 6500 adolescent girls in Kenya between the age of 10 and 14, by improving their access to health, education, economic assets and protection from violence. KEN 202874-102 Implementation ...phase for Adolescent Girls Initiative. AGI-K includes four interventions in the areas of violence prevention, education, health promotion, and wealth creation. The interventions are designed as follows:
1) Violence Prevention - preventing violence against girls: Committees are established in participating communities to identify the key challenges facing girls in that community and then to subsequently develop a ‘contract’ to prevent violence against girls. The contracts include specific steps to address issues affecting girls and an action plan for implementing the related activities. The committees include religious and community leaders, parents, teachers and young men and women. Some funding is provided to support the implementation of the contracts.
2) Education - incentivising girls to stay in primary school: Cash transfers are provided to beneficiary households conditional on the 80% school attendance of participating girls during each school term. School fees are also paid directly to the school at the start of each term as well as an incentive of £3 per girl enrolled in the program. Basic school kits, containing sanitary towels and school supplies, are provided to the girls at the beginning of the term
3) Health - promoting good health for girls: Girls meet in groups once a week under the guidance of a female mentor from the community. These “safe spaces meetings” include facilitated discussions using a health, life skills, and nutrition curriculum, as well as time for open discussion.
4) Wealth Creation - increasing financial assets for girls: Girls are provided with weekly financial training in additional “safe spaces meetings” to understand how they can manage savings. In addition, the girls receive an annual incentive of £2 to allow them to put into practice the financial skills they have learned. In Wajir, this is provided through a home bank (piggy bank); in Kibera, this is provided through a girl-friendly savings account.

To improve reproductive health... and enable women in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to exercise their right to choose whether, when and how many children they have.
more
|
The UK will provide £30m to s...upport non-state providers deliver reproductive health (RH) results over four years (2012 to 2016) in Pakistan and so improve maternal and newborn health by reducing unintended and high risk pregnancies. Non-state providers will scale up access to and use of modern family planning (FP) services initially, with potential to prove a more comprehensive Reproductive Health (RH) service package by including other interventions such as safe delivery, nutrition and prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Women, girls and men with the greatest needs (such as those in poorly-served urban and rural areas) will be prioritised in both supply and demand interventions of the project. In addition, support will also address deep-rooted social and cultural barriers that prevent women from benefitting from effective and quality services.
