POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION DEVELO...PMENT PROJECT
more
|
Postsecondary Education Develo...pment Project
more
|
The overall goal of the Projec...t is to reduce the supply-demand gap for educated labor in key economic sectors. In the short term, the Project aims to improve the quality of, and upgrade access to, postsecondary education. The number of applicants is increasing as a result of World Bank and other donor assistance to secondary education. The first objective of the Project will be to strengthen the institutional quality and capacity of the seven existing postsecondary education institutions by expanding in-country curricula choices and raising the level of courses leading to internationally recognized advanced diplomas. Quality will be improved through course and staff development, and facilities and equipment upgrading. In turn, improved quality resulting from a greater selection of advanced curriculum offerings taught by better trained teachers, especially through refresher courses for the Maldives College of Higher Education (MCHE) applicants, mobile training in branch centers, and open university distance education, will lead to a greater number of places for secondary school entrants. The second objective will be to establish MCHE to consolidate and coordinate postsecondary administration and academic programs for these institutions including admissions, accreditation, budgeting, planning, monitoring, student affairs, foundation and atoll extension, and external linkages to out-of-country universities with the view to meet international accreditation standards. The Project will have two parts.Part A will focus on upgrading the quality of seven existing postsecondary institutions. Quality upgrading will include the provision of (i) local and overseas fellowships; (ii) civil works, furniture, equipment, and learning materials for the Institute of Hotel and Catering Services (IHCS), Maldives Institute of Technical Education (MITE), and Maritime Training Center (MTC); (iii) consulting services; and (iv) fellowships and consulting services for the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS), and assistance for distance learning education.Part B will focus on capacity building of MCHE through the provision of (i) civil works, facilities, furniture, and equipment for the MCHE building with the administration offices, a student study center, a multimedia center, and a student dormitory; (ii) consulting services for MCHE; (iii) overseas study visits for MCHE staff; (iv) local fellowships for postsecondary education staff; (v) incremental recurrent costs for MCHE; and (vi) establishment of the Project implementation unit (PIU) and provision of Project management, including incremental recurrent costs for PIU.

|
The objective of the Project i...s to encourage traffic and trade flows between Cambodia and Vietnam by improving the Project Road, by improving facilities at the border crossing, and by facilitating Government efforts to reduce bureaucratic and procedural constraints to cross-border trade. The Project improves about 80 km of the Project Road to the standard required by the traffic projected to use it for domestic and international purposes over the ten-year period from 2002 to 2012. The length includes 22km of Highway 1 between Thu Duc and An Suong, which also serves as an outer ring-road to the north of Ho Chi Minh City, and 58km of Highway 22, between An Suong and the border with Cambodia at Moc Bai. Reconstruction includes the grade-separated An Suong intersection between Highways 1 and 22, a second Binh Phuoc bridge (500m long), and replacement or repair of several smaller bridges. Carriageway widths will vary from two to six lanes, and surfaced shoulders with widths of 2m to 6m will be provided for the very substantial volumes of two-wheel and nonmotirized traffic that used the road. Within the suburban area of Ho Chi Minh City, the Project Road is constructed as a divided carriageway for capacity and safety reasons. The works also includes construction of customs, immigration, and other infrastructure and buildings on the Vietnamese side of the border crossing. The Projet also includes consulting services for construction supervision, including review of contractor designs for bridges, and training of domestic Government and consultant staff. The Project

Water Resources Management Pro...ject
more
|
The objective of the Project i...s to strengthen the Government'scapacity to manage its water resources in a sustainable, participatory, and transparent way. It will be implemented in twoparts: (i) capacity building to assist in establishing NWRA andstrengthening existing agencies in the water sector (part A), and (ii) construction of urgently needed infrastructure for control and measurement of water resources (part B).Part A will have three components: (i) establishment of NWRAand its operational links to other water agencies, includingprovision of office facilities, transport, specialized technicalequipment, and related technical assistance; (ii) databaseimprovement for water resource data collection and informationmanagement by modernizing and expanding the monitoring and data management and sharing facilities; and (iii) strengthening of water resource management by supporting the implementation of plans in three pilot river basins. Part A will build capacity by providing practical exercises in the resolution of real water use problems and covering the activities that NWRA will be expected to undertake as a full-fledged operational agency. A substantial part will be demand-driven training and demonstrations, designed in response to needs as the work progresses. The training will include twinning arrangements with established river basin organizations in developed or ADB's regional countries.Part B will consist of two construction components: (i) the Kelani Conservation Barrage to restore the capacity of the water supply intake for Greater Colombo at Ambatale, and (ii) six low-flow measuring weirs for accurate measurement of low flow in selected critical rivers where there is competition for water.

Detection and characterization... of genes associated with the synthesis of bioactive compounds in bacteria from marine sediments
more
|
Bioactive compounds are increa...singly required for diverse biotechnological applications. They are of major relevance in the development of new drugs, such as antibiotics, particularly in the face of the global challenge of multi-drug resistance in microbial pathogens. The World Health Organisation (WHO) identified antibiotic resistance as ?one of the three greatest threats to human health? and warned that the world is in danger of entering a ?post-antibiotic era?, in which no chemotherapeutic agents will be available for treating infectious disease. An excellent opportunity to discover the potential of novel natural products is provided by marine environments, since the diversity of these huge microbial populations is largely unexplored. Actinobacteria represent the most prominent taxon of microorganisms for the production of bioactive compounds, notably antibiotics and antitumor agents and many bioactive natural products for direct health-related application have been isolated from marine Actinobacteria derived from sea sediments. The research project is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria (www.utfsm.cl) in Valpariso, Chile, the Culture Collection University of Gothenburg (CCUG; www.ccug.se) at the Sahlgrenska Academy of the University of Gothenburg and a Small-to Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME), Nanoxis AB (www.nanoxis.com).

DETECTION AND CHARACTERIZATION... OF THE WATERBORNE PARASITE CRYPTOSPORIDIUM IN BANGLADESH AND SWEDEN
more
|
Cryptosporidium is a zoonotic ...pathogen posing a significant public health threat globally. It is an important cause of water and sanitation-related diarrheal disease worldwide. Despite major knowledge gaps in this area, the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis is generally considered higher in developing countries than in developed countries. Previous studies indicate that cryptosporidiosis may be a significant cause of diarrheal illness in Bangladesh, especially in young children. Outbreaks may also occur in developed countries, exemplified by two major outbreaks in Sweden in 2010-11. There is an overall need for improved epidemiological and diagnostic tools employed for the environmental survey and laboratory diagnosis of this parasitic disease. The proposed study will contribute to the elucidation of the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in water in Bangladesh. Molecular differentiation of Cryptosporidium species commonly found in animal faces or human feces will provide important epidemiological data and improved sensitivity and accuracy for human diagnostics. The execution of the project builds on reciprocal exchange at the methodological and educational levels. The results will provide important information to Health Authorities of both countries in respect of prevalence and spreading potential of this parasite. Furthermore, the establishment of methodologies for diagnostics and genetic characterizations of the parasite will aid in actions to be taken in outbreak situations.

The female breast cancer is mo...st frequent cancer types worldwide, especially in Pakistan, one out of nine suspected to develop breast cancer. Early and efficient diagnosis of breast cancer is essential for the treatment/ disease management. Presently X-rays are used for diagnosis of breast cancer that have certain limitations due to ionizing nature and may itself cause cancer, and it cannot differentiate between benign and malignant tumors, especially in dense breast. Diffused optical spectroscopy (DOS), on the other hand, utilizes near NIR non-ionizing radiations, has proven itself a potential candidate for the non-invasive and efficient diagnosis of cancer. It is based on the absorption and scattering properties of cancerous tissues. Two approaches has been developed so far, namely Time and Frequency-resolved DOS for the determination of the optical properties of normal and diseased tissues. In this project, our aim is to achieve improvements in optical diagnostics of female breast. The research and development of the proposed project will be carried out through collaboration between National Institute of Lasers and Optronics Islamabad and Lund University Sweden. In-vivo studies on cancer patients will be carried out at Nuclear oncology Radiation Institute Islamabad Pakistan. The results of this project has the potential to benefit many patients yearly.

DEVELOPMENTAL ORIGINS OF HEALT...H AND DISEASE: EQUITABLE PREVENTION ACROSS GENERATIONS? FOLLOW-UP OF THE MINIMAT RANDOMIZED TRIAL IN BANGLADESH
more
|
This project - follow-up of th...e MINIMat trial - is implemented in Bangladesh, in a context, where food insecurity and maternal malnutrition still prevail, but where changing lifestyles and economic growth potentially increase the risk for future chronic disease of the offspring. Pregnant women were randomised to an early (E) start of prenatal food supplementation vs. usual program start, and multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) vs. iron-folate. Participants were followed-up for primary outcomes (maternal haemoglobin, birth weight, and infant survival) and for a series of secondary outcomes based on the Developmental Origin of Health and Disease hypothesis. So far we have demonstrated a remarkable effect of E-MMS on infant and under-five survival, and effects of the interventions on childhood stunting and metabolic markers at 4.5 years. We aim at studying whether the effects of the prenatal interventions on growth and metabolic markers up to 4.5 years are sustained at 10 years, to evaluate if these interventions reduce health disparities, and whether social conditions and maternal stressors modify the effect on children of the interventions, and to analyse the public health impact and the cost-utility of the interventions in order to inform policy and possibilities for scaling-up.
