Caritas-Rwanda will continue t...o improve the nutritional status of mothers and children (especially those under 2 years of age) through community-based interventions in nine districts. The project will seek to improve the well-being of HIV/AIDS-affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and improve the nutritional status of adults living with HIV through cooking demonstrations, nutrition assessments (anthropometric measurements) and nutrition counseling. Of the 73,482 people supported under this program, 14,416 are OVCs, 36,000 are children under five years, and 7,200 are pregnant and lactating women. The project uses cost effective community-based solutions like internal savings and loan groups, farmers field schools and the positive deviance hearth model to address nutritional and financial needs of beneficiaries, with emphasis on resilience and empowerment through economic strengthening, food security, nutrition and hygiene, and increased access to health services.

In Rwanda, the limited availab...ility of public health information remains a significant barrier to individual well-being and the promotion of public health goals. The Rwanda Social Marketing Program (RSMP) seeks to contribute to filling this gap by implementing health communication activities that increase access to health information and health products, and promote healthy behaviors among Rwandans on issues related to HIV and AIDS, malaria, family planning, and child survival. Target beneficiaries include vulnerable groups such as female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSM), motorcycle taxi drivers, truck drivers, people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV), and caregivers of children under five.

Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
|
The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions; the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

Gikuriro Activity
|
The primary purpose of the USA...ID-supported Gikuriro (Good Growth) integrated nutrition and WASH project is to improve the nutritional status of women of reproductive age and children under five years of age, with an emphasis on the 1,000 day window of opportunity from pregnancy until a child's second birthday. In addition, Gikuriro will promote WASH activities, including handwashing practices, safe water use to prevent diarrheal infections. Through Gikuriro, USAID is expected to reach an estimated 324,000 children under five years of age and their mothers with nutrition and hygiene interventions in eight districts of Rwanda. In support of the Government of Rwanda's efforts, Gikuriro will contribute to priority nutrition and hygiene outcomes.

The Rwanda Service Delivery Ac...tivity (RSDA) will reduce maternal and child mortality by improving the quality and effectiveness of health services across the country. While Rwanda has high rates of facility delivery and first antenatal care (ANC), newborn and maternal mortality are still high, uptake of family planning (FP) methods is plateauing, and there is a surge of new malaria cases. RSDA interventions will support improved quality of maternal and child health services, including ANC, integrated management of newborn/childhood illness, broad reproductive health and FP services, facility-based WASH activities, behavioral change and communication activities and malaria prevention and control services.

The "Integrated Health Service...s and Healthy Behaviors (ISD-HB)†project, also known as Neema, supports the Government of Senegal in its efforts to ensure that health services are improved in a sustainable manner and used effectively to reduce maternal, neonatal and child mortality and morbidity rates and contribute to the emergence of an AIDS-free generation. Implemented as part of USAID's Health Program 2016-2021, the Neema project is implemented by a consortium of NGOs led by IntraHealth International. The project combines support for service delivery in public health structures, community health system strengthening, the design, implementation of integrated communication strategies for social and behavior change (SBCC), research, monitoring and evaluation in priority health areas. The Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) leads the SBCC component of the Neema project and will be hosting the student in the project office in Dakar.

SUSTAINABLE MARKETING AND DIST...RIBUTION FOR LOCALLY PRODUCED FORTIFIED COMPLEMENTARY FOODS FOR CHILDREN IN VIETNAM

Sustainable marketing and dist...ribution for locally produced fortified complementary foods for children in Vietnam
more
|
During a 36-month project impl...emented from 2015 to 2018, researchers developed nutritious fortified complementary foods for young children in Vietnam using a public-private partnership approach. The project demonstrated the suitability of an integrated value chain model using locally grown crops, local manufacturing facilities, and local distribution channels. Fifteen nutrition counselling centres were also set up at local health facilities to provide mothers and caregivers with timely nutrition and health information about feeding practices for infants and young children. Initial results comparing body measurements from baseline and endline surveys found a decline in underweight prevalence among children (from 17.2% to 13.9%) and a decline in wasting (from 7.9% to 3.4%). To ensure sustainability and scaling of these results, this research support project will help the National Institute of Nutrition of Vietnam, in collaboration with a local small-scale enterprise, to identify cost-effective approaches to increase market penetration and consumer demand for the nutritious complementary foods in the remote mountainous provinces of northern Vietnam.

MATERNAL AND CHILD SURVIVAL PR...OGRAM (MCSP - FORMERLY RMNCH)
more
|
|

Regional Action Through Data (...RAD)
more
|
Regional Action Through Data (...RAD) will improve health and development outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa by changing how and why data is collected and analyzed to achieve results. Activities include (1) regional level: equip and empower stakeholders with evidence-based analytics to drive policy, strategy, program development, and resource allocation; (2) patient/provider level: focus on cross-border populations by implementing a cloud-based personal electronic health record system, integrating cross-border data collection to ensure quality and continuity of patient care regardless of their location.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication - from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic - to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program - which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) - is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
