CROSS-CUTTING HEALTH SYSTEMS S...TRENGTHENING (FP/RH)
more
Cross-cutting Health Systems S...trengthening (FP/RH)
more
Promote sustainable improvemen...ts in health outcomes by reducing key health systems constraints to achieve the goals and objectives of multiple health elements and the health area overall. Activities coded here aim to promote financial protection, efficiency, and affordability of health services in general; ensure the quality or availability of an essential package of prevention, promotion, treatment and care services; enhance equitable access to priority services by under-served, marginalized and other high priority groups; and ensure responsiveness to people's expectations. Such activities strengthen the core health systems functions/building blocks (leadership and governance; finance; human resources for health; medicines, vaccines and technology; and service delivery). Note 1: Operating Units should report activities that address specific element goals under other elements, reserving the use of this cross-cutting health systems strengthening element for overarching activities that are supported with multiple health element funding. Note 2: Operating units should report activities that strengthen the information function of the health system under the Host Country Strategic Information Systems element.

MATERNAL AND CHILD SURVIVAL PR...OGRAM (MCSP - FORMERLY RMNCH)
more
Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions; the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

The purpose of the Health Poli...cy Plus (HP+) project is to improve the enabling environment for equitable and sustainable health services, supplies and delivery systems through policy development and implementation, with an emphasis on family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH), maternal and child health (MCH), and HIV and AIDS. It is expected that work across health policy, advocacy, financing, and governance, in a highly coordinated and collaborative approach and with attention to gender equality and equity issues, will be required to achieve the project purpose. This project will leverage previous USG investments in the areas of policy, advocacy, financing, and governance, preserve the progress made to date, and ensure progression toward stated objectives.

more
Integrated Gorongosa National ...Park and Buffer Zone Project
more
Located in Sofala Province, a ...priority USAID province, Gorongosa National Park (GNP) once boasted some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Southern Africa. Although decimated by civil war and its aftermath, wildlife is now recovering. Land use adjacent to the Park mostly consists of agriculture combined with mining, forestry and hunting concessions in certain areas. Biodiversity conservation is strongly linked with human and economic development of surrounding communities in order to guarantee sustainability. The USG supports a range of activities under an umbrella Global Development Alliance to ensure the long-term viability of the GNP by addressing the biodiversity and human needs in and around the park. Issues like poaching and deforestation are also being addressed by working directly with farmers in the buffer zone to increase their yields and incomes. By providing alternative nutrition sources other than poached meat and access to basic health care, like child immunization, malaria prevention and treatment, breastfeeding, and reproductive health services, this improves the overall health of the communities and reduces pressure on the natural resources.

Communication for Improved Hea...lth Outcomes Activity (CIHO) will complement the existing efforts by the Government of the Republic of Mozambique (GRM) and development partners to expand access and improve the quality of health services in Sofala. Social and behavior change communications (SBCC) interventions are essential for garnering community support and for addressing human behaviors that are requisite for maximizing the health impact of these health system advances. CIHO will improve Mozambiques capacity to design, implement, and coordinate high-quality SBCC, allowing health promotion efforts to more effectively reduce morbidity and mortality caused by preventable diseases.

GHAR GHAR MA SWASTHYA
Ghar Ghar Ma Swasthya
Ghar Ghar Maa Swasthya, or Hea...lthy Homes, is a social marketing program in Nepal that works through the private sector to strengthen the marketing and distribution of health products in rural and hard-to-reach areas. This project is managed by FHI 360 in collaboration with the Nepali-managed Nepal CRS Company. The program assists the Government of Nepal in expanding the depth, reach and impact of private-sector social marketing initiatives by providing a low-cost supply of maternal and child health, family planning and HIV prevention products and services. FHI 360 provides technical support in two major areas: improving Nepal CRS Companys institutional sustainability by building its leadership capacity, and increasing the availability and accessibility of health products in hard-to-reach rural areas through implementation of cutting-edge social marketing programs.

USAID will improve the health ...and well-being of the earthquake-affected populations living in two districts: Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha. USAID will improve community water and public sanitation infrastructure; promote hygiene; and strengthen WASH governance. USAID will form or revitalize water users committees (WUCs) to construct/renovate community based water supply schemes and develop the capacity of WUCs to operate and manage these water supply systems. USAID will also promote menstrual hygiene management in schools and communities and support adoption of improved hygiene practices in communities. USAID will engage with local government and the private sector to develop management agreements for ten large scale public toilet facilities along highways or in market areas that are an important element for the attainment of Open-Defecation-Free status.

Strengthening the Public Finan...cial Management (PFM) Systems
more
This contract will operational...ize the Mission's Country Development Cooperation Strategy by supporting collaboration among targeted government ministries, local government bodies, USAID, and other donors. Activities will include targeted technical and organizational capacity building to strengthen the Government of Nepal's (GON) ability to meet demands for increased and improved public services. The activities will address issues of transparency, reporting and public financial management, especially targeted at good governance interventions impacting Presidential Initiative programming. Using technical assistance for targeted GON Ministries and their sub-national representatives, the governance activities will focus on capacity building and service delivery, while supplementing the reach of the current democracy and governance portfolio. The activity will be based on a targeted Ministry-level Public Financial Management Risk Assessment Framework conducted in 2012-2013. These assessments, including for Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) and Ministry of Education (MOE), laid the foundation for future investments in building the capacity of targeted Ministry's financial and administrative processes by revealing several major areas of need. These gaps include critical deficiencies in the areas of: budget execution; procurement; ordering of goods and services and payment of invoices; performance; external audit; and the control environment.Strengthening PFM project will support building the capacity of targeted Government of Nepal (GON) Ministries to improve transparency and accountability of public financial management (PFM) systems.

USAID will support the improve...ment of the nutritional status of women and children under five years, with an increased emphasis on the '1,000 days period' which is between pregnancy and a child's second birthday. This activity will work in 40 districts using multi-sectorial and community-based nutrition interventions and will concentrate on evidence-based, age-appropriate feeding practices (at the policy, community and household levels). These include exclusive breastfeeding; maternal and newborn care (including treatment of child illness); infant and young child feeding; maternal nutrition; essential hygiene actions including safe drinking water and safe disposal of feces; healthy timing and spacing for pregnancy; and the dangers of smoking for mothers and their babies. This activity also includes a cross-cutting component that aims to increase access to diversified, nutrient-dense food through home-based gardening and poultry farming.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication - from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic - to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program - which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) - is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
