The U.S. Government, through U...SAID, awarded the historic $650 million (Kenya Shillings 65 billion) KEMSA Medical Commodities Project (MCP) on September 25, 2015 - the largest award by a USAID bilateral mission ever. KEMSA MCP will procure, warehouse and distribute medications and equipment funded by PEPFAR, the Presidents Malaria Initiative and USAID Global Health programs for maternal and child health and family planning. KEMSA MCP is the first USAID direct contract with KEMSA, following decades of U.S. Government supported supply-chain programs.

MCSP is reducing maternal and ...newborn mortality and morbidity in Burma by strengthening the midwifery profession. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other partners, we promote best practices in maternal and newborn health care, and provide capacity building support to the Myanmar Nurses Midwives Association. We focus on evidence-based, high-quality interventions to reduce the leading drivers of maternal mortality in the country: postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, and sepsis. MCSP also addresses the major causes of newborn death through improved neonatal resuscitation, prevention and management of pre-term birth, care for preterm/low birth weight newborns, and identification and management of newborn infections. And we work with the MOH to provide national technical assistance for malaria in pregnancy and integrated community case management.

University of Liberia/Indiana ...University/University of Massachusetts Medical School: Center for Excellence in Health and Life Sciences - This partnership seeks to address the challenges that the University of Liberia (UL) and its sister public institution, the Tubman National Institute of Medical Arts (TNIMA), face in supplying health care workers equipped to address Liberia healthcare needs. The U.S. partners have shared expertise in a variety of ways, from collecting and sending current textbooks in biology, chemistry, mathematics, nursing, and other courses to providing six-week summer study tours for Liberian faculty in the United States. In addition, the partners have collaborated to create a new two-year Core Health and Life Science Undergraduate Program and begin planning for a joint four-year bachelors program in nursing science. Partners have also worked together to improve instructional quality in introductory science courses, develop upgrades to the preclinical science curriculum at the University of Liberias medical and pharmacy Colleges, and modernize the University of Liberias teaching and learning resources.

This four year G2G agreement s...upports the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW). This year the agreement will be amended to include additional activities for the Accelerated Action Plan to Reduce Maternal and Neonatal Mortality. Funds support four key activity areas: 1) increasing coverage and access to quality comprehensive and basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care and essential maternal and neonatal health care; 2) improving access to and utilization of quality family planning services; 3) expanding and strengthening outreach and community-based services; and 4) improving management of maternal and neonatal health services at the national and county levels. In Haiti, HPP has been asked to implement the USAID-funded for the Aksyon Kolektif pou Sekirite kont Eksplwatasyon (AKSE) Program which supports a multi-sectoral approach to strengthen the Haitian environment for human rights in general and for vulnerable populations, in particular, children, women, and sexual minorities. AKSE was previously implemented by CARE International. HPP will build on the work of the previous project from March 2014 through at least September 2015, with potential for extension.

The USAID-funded Madagascar Co...mmunity-Based Integrated Health Project (CBIHP), known locally as MAHEFA, was a five-year health program that provided basic, quality health care to isolated populations in six north and northwestern regions of Madagascar (DIANA, SAVA, Sofia, Menabe, Boeny and Melaky). The program’s overarching goal was to increase the use of proven, community-based interventions and essential products among underserved populations of Madagascar. Activities focused on improving access to and use of an integrated package of maternal, newborn, and child health services, family planning, and improving safe water, hygiene, and sanitation. The program continues to be known for innovative solutions to reaching remote communities, documented improvements in community health, and collaborative work with local NGOs, the Malagasy Ministry of Health, civil society organizations, and community leaders.

MCSP is reducing maternal and ...newborn mortality and morbidity in Burma by strengthening the midwifery profession. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other partners, we promote best practices in maternal and newborn health care, and provide capacity building support to the Myanmar Nurses Midwives Association. We focus on evidence-based, high-quality interventions to reduce the leading drivers of maternal mortality in the country: postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, and sepsis. MCSP also addresses the major causes of newborn death through improved neonatal resuscitation, prevention and management of pre-term birth, care for preterm/low birth weight newborns, and identification and management of newborn infections. And we work with the MOH to provide national technical assistance for malaria in pregnancy and integrated community case management.

It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. SHOPS focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and other health areas through the private sector. Note: Follwoing the May, 2013 termination of USAID activities in Bolivia, the SHOPS project is no longer providing thecnical assistance in Bolivia.

CONCERT aims to reduce fertili...ty and population growth; lower the risk of HIV/AIDS; and reduce maternal and infant and under-five mortality rates. The project has broad national coverage through mass media, campaigns, and capacity building, as well as intensive implementation through projects local partners. During the life of the project, CONCERT will: 1) Work to improve coordination and planning by developing a platform for health messaging and integrated communication strategies. 2) Develop a multi-media campaign using a centrepiece radio programme and family health booklet. 3) Develop a community mobilization toolkit. 4) Support capacity development of the HEU and explore the creation of an S/BCC knowledge management system. 5) Develop and document best practices, introducing new approaches to S/BCC and conduct operations research.

The FORECAST Malawi Program su...pports both the education and health sectors under USAID/Malawis Investing in People program through academic training in the US (students earning undergraduate degrees in education at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, WI) and in third countries (students earning graduate degrees in health-related areas at institutions in Kenya and South Africa). World Learning has worked with USAID/Malawi on this important academic exchange since 2002 under the START contract. To date, 40 Malawians have graduated from Lakeland College and have returned to Malawi to take up teaching positions at Malawis six teacher training colleges. Another 15 are scheduled to graduate before the contract ends. Five students have either graduated or are in the process of earning their Masters Degrees in Community Health in Kenya and have returned to work at the Ministry of Health in Malawi, working on such pressing issue as River Blindness and Malaria prevention.

The CSHGP facilitates a dynami...c partnership between USAID and private and voluntary organizations (PVOs)/NGOs. Through the CSHGP, USAID leverages the development entrepreneurship and know how of PVOs/NGOs and their local partners for innovative and effective community-oriented programming that sustainably improves maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) outcomes, strengthens local and community health systems, and contributes to reductions in morbidity and mortality. PVOs/NGOs, with their local partners (national and local MOH, local NGOs/CBOs, communities), implement in a range of settings, from remote communities in a single district to multiple districts or a province. Projects address critical health needs of vulnerable populationsand work strategically with a systems approach at the household, community,health facility, and policy levels and strengthens linkages as relevant.

The purpose of the Health Poli...cy Plus (HP+) project is to improve the enabling environment for equitable and sustainable health services, supplies and delivery systems through policy development and implementation, with an emphasis on family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH), maternal and child health (MCH), and HIV and AIDS. It is expected that work across health policy, advocacy, financing, and governance, in a highly coordinated and collaborative approach and with attention to gender equality and equity issues, will be required to achieve the project purpose. This project will leverage previous USG investments in the areas of policy, advocacy, financing, and governance, preserve the progress made to date, and ensure progression toward stated objectives.
