UNICEF and nutrition cluster partners have committed to implementing programmes that address the essential components of the package, notably management of acute malnutrition, deworming, micronutrient support, immunizations, IYCF, maternal nutrition and care, and prevention management of common childhood illnesses.
Staving off famine
To prevent more people from reaching famine conditions, UNICEF and partner agencies has put in place a five-pronged strategy of scaling up treatment services for severe and moderate acute malnutrition, blanket supplementary feeding for families with children under 5 years and/or pregnant and lactating women, wet feeding for select IDP populations, and a cash-based response initiative.

Le projet vise à réduire la ...mortalité infantile par la prise en charge
médico-nutritionnelle gratuite et de qualité de la MAS dans la région sanitaire de
N'Djamena et le district sanitaire de N'Gouri, pour les enfants de moins de 5 ans.
A N'Gouri, le projet visera:
- l'appui à 12 AS existantes (UNA) et un UNT pour la PEC gratuite de 4 036
enfants MAS ;
- la mise en place de dépistages communautaires actifs combinés avec des
activités ponctuelles de dépistage, déparasitage et de supplémentation en vitamine
A ;
- l'amélioration de la qualité des soins fournis dans les centres de santé par des
activités de réhabilitation, d'élargissement de capacité hospitalière, de gestion des
intrants médicaux et thérapeutiques, du système d'évaluation et d'amélioration des
indicateurs de performances;
- l'appui des consultations gratuites pour les enfants de moins de 5 ans, avec
référencement et hospitalisation des cas compliqués sur 12 aires de santé et le
service pédiatrique de l'hôpital de Ngouri ;
- la mise en place d'une surveillance et éventuelle réponse aux urgences.
A N'Djamena, le projet visera:
- la PEC de 19 763 enfants MAS dans 5 UNA et un UNT;
- un renforcement en ressources humaines, en termes médical, d'infrastructures
et de sensibilisation à l'hygiène au niveau des structures de santé appuyées ;
- la sensibilisation des mères accompagnantes sur les pratiques familiales
essentielles et l'hygiène ;
- l'intégration du dépistage et de la prise en charge du VIH et de la tuberculose
parmi les enfants MAS pris en charge;
- le renforcement de la prise en charge intégrée de la malnutrition aigüe (PCIMA)
dans les structures de santé à N'Djamena grâce à une formation continue du
personnel médical (soit les équipes du MSP et les équipes d'Alima/AS) complétée
par un processus de supervision formative ;
- la prise de conscience de l'important caseload MAS en capitale, et de l'intérêt
d'intégrer la prise en charge de la MAS dans les activités de soins de santé.
Beneficiaries Total: 45,584 45584 Enfants de moins de 5 ans pris en charge pour la MAS et
pathologies infantiles associées dont: 19 763 enfants MAS de moins de 5 ans pris
en charge à N'Djamena, 4 036 enfants MAS pris en charge à N'Gouri et 21 785
enfants pris en charge en consultations pédiatriques en ambulatoire et
hospitalisation à N'Gouri

To contribute to the reduction... of malnutrition, mortality and morbidity rates among children and Pregnant and Lactating women in Maungdaw District (Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships), Rakhine State, Myanmar.
Target groups
• Children under 12 and PLW make up the major part of direct beneficiaries as they are the most affected by under-nutrition.
• With regard to Mental Health and Care Practices (MHCP) activities, the ACF team integrated in nutrition centres will identify the most vulnerable beneficiaries according to psycho-social distress criteria.
• 350 Super Community Care Takers (SCCTs) who have already been identified during the previous phase, through different criteria, from their motivation to the quality of their referrals and participation in ACF activities;
• 250 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA)/ Traditional Healers (TH) will be selected by community leaders;
• 65 MoH staff will be identified by the Township Medical Officers.

The programme aims to improve ...children's living conditions in the Renacer area so that they can grow in a safe and non-violent environment. The programme is implemented in the rural area of Ayacucho, Acocro and Tambillo municipalities. Historically, the programme area has suffered badly from the past Peruvian civil war which still affects children's and communities' lives. Poverty, adults' illiteracy and the poor quality of health services further affect children's lives in the programme area. Now, the communities' and the programme partners' capacities in child protection are being strengthened. Children's nutrition status is being enhanced for example by supporting livestock breeding. Innovative teaching methods are introduced in order to promote the quality of pre and primary education. The programme benefits 16.000 people in 33 rural villages. The main partner is World Vision Peru, which is responsible for the programme implementation and for the utilization of the programme resources.

The programme works for the st...rengthening of children's well-being by improving pre and primary education, by awareness raising on health and nutrition and by widening poor families' livelihoods opportunities. The programme is implemented in Ehetuwewa, Kurunegala state, North West of Sri Lanka. Key development challenges include the shortage of clead water and sanitation facilities. The health service infrastructure is weak and children's malnutrition prevalent. A special challenge in this area is wild elephants, whose attacks regularly disturb crops. The programme aims to empower community members to utilize their own capacities. Opportunities for new means of livelihoods and entrepreneurship are promoted. The services of child health centers are improved. In addition, the community members are provided with information on child rights and child protection and children's clubs for child participation are established.The programme benefits 29.000 people in 15 rural villages. The main partner is World Vision Sri Lanka, which is responsible for the programme implementation and for the utilization of the programme resources.

The project 'Healthy and well-...nourished children studying' is based on development cooperation work by the NGO Martsarin kummikouluyhdistys conducted in Kilingi area North Tanzania for nearly 30 years now. The people of the area are poor and the families cannot afford educating their children without monetary help. The poor infrastructure of education (school premises) makes it difficult to deliver education - the state should take care of maintaining school buildings but this has not been possible. Healthcare is also underdeveloped in the area and AIDS and malaria complicate the life of the community. Safeguarding basic education to all children of the area making health care available and enhancing the health conditions of the population by improving sanitation and by health instruction are core topics and goals in the voluntary work of the NGO. The aim is to help the community so that children and especially girls can go to school without financial limitation. The NGO also supports young people in their further education and thus securing better future for themselves. The school heath care work started by the NGO is specific in the area and there is good progress in preventing diseases (see attachment report by the school nurse Edita Tesha).The main beneficiaries of the project are school children. The main activities for the funding period are maintenance and development of the health care system in the primary and secondary school of Kilingi by supplementing the equipment and increasing health education development of school education and the learning environment as well as improving sanitation by building new toilets to the school. The health education is beneficial also for the families of the pupils.Of the cross-cutting objectives of the Finnish development cooperation policy the actions of this project implement especially these two: promoting gender equality and reducing of inequality of all kind. Making education possible for all children secures their future especially in the case of girls and the living conditions of the poor people are improved by appropriate sanitation making it easier to take care of basic need. The project implements very well several of the principles in the guidelines of civil society for NGO development cooperation giving for example the opportunity to a large number of NGO members the opportunity to a personal experience of development cooperation.
