HEALTH WORKERS' INCENTIVES IN ...SOUTH SUDAN (IMCHA)
more
|
Health Workers' Incentives in ...South Sudan (IMCHA)
more
|
South Sudan has some of the wo...rst health indicators in the world. This project will seek to address the problem by improving community health-worker motivation and performance. This, in turn, will help improve maternal and child health outcomes. Access to health care in South Sudan Fifty-five percent of South Sudanese live beyond walking distance to a health clinic. Poverty, limited infrastructure, lack of health information, severe shortages of health personnel, and lack of up-to-date standards of practice are seriously compromising healthcare services. The Ministry of Health and BRAC South Sudan (a non-governmental organization) are using the support of community health workers to address the gap and extend existing health interventions to underserved communities. There is a need to improve the performance of the country's 3,000 community health workers and to sustain their services using approaches that work. Reducing deaths, improving health This project will provide information on sustainable methods of delivering community-based primary healthcare services in emergency settings. The project team will examine non-financial incentives that will help improve the performance of community health workers. The study's first phase includes analyzing a qualitative evaluation of existing community health-worker programs in South Sudan and other BRAC-supported countries (Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Liberia). During the second phase, a randomized controlled trial will assess whether non-financial incentives are effective enough to sustain support of community health workers in South Sudan. The findings from this project will address gaps in knowledge for cost-effective measures, such as non-financial incentives, to improve access to health care for mothers and children in high conflict contexts. The results will directly inform, strengthen, and scale community health-worker program efforts implemented by BRAC and the Ministry of Health in South Sudan. The research team will share its findings through scientific publications and presentations. Project partners This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. The program is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries, (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers, and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram allows for the sending of 60 volunteer advisors, mainly dentists, optometrists and homeopaths mission. The program aims to 1) strengthen the individual capacities of local partners; 2) improve the practices of health and education professionals; and 3) improve the day-to-day practices of managers and staff of partner organizations. These health professionals will aim to help alleviate, on a volunteer basis, some of the most urgent health deficiencies among the poor, starting with children and school-aged children and their mothers, in regions lacking access to care. This will significantly increase the learning capacity, job performance and income of beneficiaries. In addition, the Canadian volunteers contribute to community management of certain health problems by promoting the establishment of fruitful and lasting collaboration between organizations from within the community and the services provided by public health institutions. The program also supports a public engagement program to form a body of Canadian citizens who are more educated, informed and engaged.

This project works in collabor...ation with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project addresses this inequality by working to improve the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H'Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam). Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives. The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 children) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component. This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam. Both the Banke district and Lai Chau province are among the poorest areas in the two countries with high mortality rates and the least access to essential health services.
