This activity will focus on mobilizing private sector capital towards opportunities that can generate an economic and social impact. This program is global in scope, with potential activities in any country and/or region where USAID operates. It is also open to engaging in any economic sector, in support of current and future Agency priorities. It is anticipated that at least 50% of this program's funding will be dedicated to agriculture activities in support of the Feed the Future Initiative.

Each year GHPOD II designs and delivers as many as 45 professional development programs and 50 OD interventions, and provides coaching to about 60 USAID global health professionals.

STAR improves the effectivenes...s of global health programs worldwide by developing and strengthening the capacity of global health professionals by placing fellows and interns in external institutions, primarily in USAID-supported countries, and in USAID in partnership with academic and other institutions. STAR strengthens the technical and analytic professional cadre of human resources for global health by partnering with organizations of higher learning, development research, and/or health professional associations. Leveraging the expertise, resources, and partnerships of academic institutions and many other types of organizations, STAR contributes to strengthening institutions in developing countries that provide technical leadership and improve systems that promote technical collaboration across the global health community. STAR strengthens the pool of health professionals globally through field experience with developing country organizations, provides opportunities to diverse health professionals who mirror the populations USAID serves globally to build their skills and gain exposure to international health programs, and improves collaborative systems and long-term, sustainable partnerships for open exchange and utilization of information, knowledge, and educational resources to promote technical excellence and learning.

ANTIBIOTIC STEWARDSHIP IN AGRI...CULTURAL COMMUNITIES IN AFRICA AND ASIA: A UNIFIED ONE HEALTH STRATEGY TO OPTIMISE ANTIBIOTIC USE IN ANIMALS AND HUMANS
more
|
Antibiotic stewardship in agri...cultural communities in Africa and Asia: A unified One Health strategy to optimise antibiotic use in animals and humans
more
|
Antibiotic medicines are a vit...al resource for treating bacterial infections both in humans and in animals. Unfortunately, all around the world, some infections are becoming resistant to the antibiotics used to treat them. This could lead to a future scenario in which illnesses last longer, deaths increase, and the cost of treatment rises. Resistance additionally threatens livelihoods due to farmers' reliance on antimicrobials in livestock production to meet growing demand. Under this scenario, the greatest impact will be felt in low-income countries, where infectious diseases are common and many families lack financial security. Antibiotic resistance is now considered to be one of the biggest threats to global health. The UN General Assembly has called for concerted action by every national government to limit the development and spread of drug resistance. The World Health Organization advocates urgent action, research and investment, through both the development of new antimicrobials and more responsible use of existing drugs. Poor prescription practices such as overuse of antibiotics, partial doses, or non-adherence to the full treatment course, all create situations which are conducive to the selection and spread of resistant mutations. Health workers, pharmacists, farmers, caregivers and patients can all help tackle resistance by only dispensing antibiotics when they are truly needed, and by using the right drug in the right quantities. Improving the use of antibiotics thus ultimately involves developing effective interventions to guide the treatment decisions made by health workers, patients and farmers to discourage indiscriminate use. The private sector plays an important role in provision of health care in many low-income countries, with a majority of patients and farmers depending on drug shops and informal providers for medicines - and cannot be overlooked in strategies to control misuse of antibiotics. Neither can antibiotic resistance be addressed by focusing on one sector in isolation - a holistic approach is needed for the effective control of antibiotics in animals and humans. Yet regulation of the private sector is an acknowledged weakness of the health system in many low-middle income countries. The proposed cluster aims to address this challenge. We shall pool the knowledge and insights that have been generated in six projects previously funded by GCRF, to compare the situations, norms, experiences, and motivations that affect antibiotic use in humans and animals across a range of countries in Africa and Asia - to identify processes that can deter misuse of these valuable medicines and/or incentivize good practice. Our particular focus will be on antibiotics purchased from drug shops and informal providers in rural agricultural areas with limited access to healthcare. Our projects also look at the influence of interactions between private providers, government health workers and public officials, to gain a better understand

KNOWLEDGE SUCCESS
|
Knowledge SUCCESS
|
Knowledge SUCCESS (Strengtheni...ng Use, Capacity, Collaboration, Exchange, Synthesis, and Sharing) is a five-year (2019-2024), $35 million global project funded by USAID s Office for Population and Reproductive Health. Knowledge SUCCESS champions the use of knowledge management, or the process of collecting and curating knowledge and connecting people to it so they can act effectively, within the global family planning and reproductive health community. The project serves a wide range of audiences, however, the main audience is family planning implementers those professionals who are responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating family planning programs and services and the project's mandate is to meet their knowledge needs: by making critical, high-quality information available and accessible, by enabling routine, meaningful sharing of knowledge, and by building lasting capacity for collaboration, learning, and adaptation. The project is led by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) in partnership with Amref Health Africa, The Busara Center for Behavioral Economics, and FHI 360. Our team combines extensive knowledge management and family planning expertise with emerging behavioral science approaches and a global and regional reach. Knowledge SUCCESS builds on the legacy of USAID s Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project and its popular products and services.

MATERNAL AND CHILD SURVIVAL PR...OGRAM (MCSP - FORMERLY RMNCH)
more
|
Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
|
The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions, the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

STRENGTHENING EGYPTS FAMILY PL...ANNING PROGRAM (SEFPP)
more
|
Strengthening Egypts Family Pl...anning Program (SEFPP)
more
|
Strengthening Egypts Family Pl...anning Program (SEFPP), a five-year, USAID-funded activity, works with the GOE to strengthen its family planning system and integrate family planning into the GOEs maternal health and other health programs. SEFPP builds upon the significant achievements the GOE, donors, and the private sector have had in the family planning sector, in addition to JSIs previous successful work in Egypt. The project aims to create sustainable solutions that will help address Egypts growing population by increasing the use of family planning methods and promoting healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies. Project implementation is focused on the nine governorates of Upper Egypt and the slums of Cairo and Alexandria.
