Abt will support Tanzania's go...vernment at both national and local levels to promote the delivery, quality, and use of public services, particularly for underserved populations. While primarily focused on health systems, this multi-sectoral program will work closely with Local Government Authorities to promote inclusive and evidence based planning, management, and implementation of services which will have an impact beyond the health sector.

Abt Associates is leading the ...five-year USAID Public Sector Systems Strengthening Activity (PS3) to help strengthen systems –particularly health systems — at Tanzania’s national, regional, and council levels. PS3’s diverse team brings together their inter-disciplinary experts — including researchers, lecturers, financiers, information technology practitioners finance, and former public officials — to promote the delivery, quality, and use of public services in the health sector, particularly for the most underserved populations in Tanzania.
This multi-sectoral program works closely with local governments to promote inclusive and evidence-based planning, management, and implementation of services that reach beyond the health sector, including education, agriculture, infrastructure, and water sanitation.

|
According to UNRWA US paid 152....3 mio. US$ for Programme Budget; evidently amount reported includes programme (regular) budget as well as non-programme; calculation is based on this information and imputed health share of core funding - "The United States is committed to continuing its partnership with UNRWA to assist Palestine refugees and other persons registered by UNRWA until a just solution is achieved and UNRWA’s mandate ends.
Recognizing the need for early and predictable funding, the United States should endeavor to provide a significant contribution to UNRWA for its 2016 core programs early in the 2016 calendar year. Subject to the availability of funds, the United States endeavors to provide 18-20 percent of General Fund budget requirements ( would tranlate in approximately 150 mio. US$).
Subject to the availability of funds, the United States aims to contribute to UNRWA’s needs as articulated in its emergency and/or flash appeals for the West Bank, Gaza, and Syria regional response.
In addition, subject to the availability of funds, the United States intends to continue support for selected special projects mutually identified by the United States and UNRWA, including continued support for UNRWA’s human rights, conflict resolution, and tolerance education program in all five fields and continued support for the OSO programs in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and the ASO program in Syria." ---- Old: $8m community mental health. $6m emergency health. Total US$ 403 million. (PSE 65_14557 Initial Contribution 2016 p.2)

Improving microphage innate im...munity by modulating protein tyrosine phosphatases: The complete mouse and human PTPomes
more
|
Diseases that result from an i...nfection are most often resolved by cells that use an immune response to clear foreign agents. These cells include macrophages, which are the predominant type of cell that eliminates infectious agents in a process called phagocytosis, or eating the foreign particles. There are two specialized subsets of macrophages: pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory macrophages. This research focuses on the pro-inflammatory macrophages, also called M1, which are responsible for triggering an immune response against infectious agents to promote their killing. This project investigates the therapeutic potential of inhibiting a class of proteins named protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) to treat infectious diseases. Recent findings suggest that mice in which PTP-RO is inhibited have an increased number of macrophages in the bone marrow, while PTP-1B leads to a pro-inflammatory response in macrophages. The authors hypothesize that certain PTPs favour the generation of the pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages, thereby regulating the functions leading to promoting immune surveillance and killing of infectious agents. The project proposes that regulating the expression and activity of these PTPs may improve the function of these macrophages and promote better anti-pathogenic responses. The research will improve understanding of infectious disease progression and contribute to the development of new methods of treatment for infectious diseases by regulating specific PTPs. The project is led in Canada by McGill University, with the collaboration of the Weizmann Institute (Israel) and the University of Hyderabad (India). This project was selected and approved for funding through the second research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program, a partnership between Canada's International Development Research Centre, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation, and the Azrieli Foundation. This 7-year, $35M Canadian-Israeli effort draws on the unique scientific strengths of both countries and facilitates networking opportunities with peers from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. All projects include a plan for integrating researchers from low- and middle-income countries that will establish long-term scientific relationships.

Construction of Health and Edu...cation Facilities (CHEF) Program
more
|
The Construction of Health and... Education Facilities (CHEF) project addresses the medical needs of more than two million Afghan citizens through the construction of two new hospitals, a 100-bed hospital in Gardez, and a 20 bed hospital in Paktika.Additionally over 1 million Afghan citizens will benefit from the construction of three provincial midwife training centers in Faizabad, Khost, and Bamiyan. These health facilities will support the Ministry of Public Health in its efforts to provide urgently needed health services, including in-patient and out-patient referral and treatment. The hospitals will also serve as training facilities for health professionals, as well as venues for medical conferences and seminars. The education component of the CHEF project, through construction of four Provincial Teacher Training Centers (PTTC), aims to address the following teacher training goals identified by the Ministry of Education: 1) providing the proper infrastructure needed to educate trainers of teachers and teachers themselves; 2) strengthening the educational requirements of the country; and 3) increasing the quality and number of teachers. Target PTTC's are located in Wardak, Faryab, Nangarhar, and Parwan provinces.

Health Care Improvement - Task... Order 3
more
|
The Health Care Improvement Pr...oject worked to improve essential obstetric and newborn services at the health facility and community levels. The project sought to reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality through the application of effective quality improvement approaches to services ranging from antenatal to postnatal care and family planning services, including institutionalizing active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL). The USAID Mission in Mali engaged URC to work in three additional areas: management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, maternal anemia, and family planning counseling and post-partum care.

HEMAYAT will increase access a...nd availability of gender-sensitive family planning, maternal, newborn, and child health (FP/MNCH) services at the facility and community levels while supporting introduction and scale-up of culturally appropriate, cost-effective, high impact interventions that strengthen the Ministry of Public Health's (MoPH) basic package of health services. HEMAYAT will work to strengthening the technical and stewardship capacity of Reproductive Health and Child and Adolescent departments of the MoPH, Provincial Public Health Officers, in-service and pre-service training institutions, implementing NGOs, and communities. HEMAYAT will collaborate with the MoPH to broadcast and disseminate an already-developed FP TV series in local languages. Other mass media endeavors include billboard messaging, written FP messaging, and radio spots with both FP and gender awareness content. HEMAYAT will also support media outlets which provide high volume and quality FP coverage.

INTRO AND SCALE UP PLANNING
|
Intro and Scale Up Planning
|
Human-centered design (HCD) pl...aces the target population and other important stakeholders at the center of the design and implementation process. HCD was developed in the private sector to integrate business and technology around human needs. There are two ways to leverage HCD in global health development work: designing for user needs (target the right user group for an offering or intervention, drive the adoption and scale-up of new health behaviors, and rapidly conceptualize, prototype, and test new interventions and ensure they are viable for the provider) and improving collaboration across diverse stakeholders (establish and communicate a shared mission and vision across stakeholders, create and promote methods within teams for increased collaboration, and improve data usage to support shared decision-making). Examples of this work include: driving demand for the use of chlorhexidine, and increasing the uptake of the dapivarine ring.

Through the USAID Advancing Un...iversal Health Coverage (AUHC) Activity, the Smiling Sun Network will transform into the Surjer Hashi Network, a centrally managed, sustainable, private social enterprise that provides millions of people with high-quality primary care. AUHC is introducing innovative business and operational models, creating research-based health service packages for the poor, and experimenting with new health service delivery channels. Developing a robust research agenda, AUHC also monitors the impact of new systems and processes on advancing universal health coverage. This new model of health service delivery will catalyze new players in Bangladesh's health industry and inspire other health service providers to replicate the innovations modeled by the Surjer Hashi Network.
