The ONWARD Network (Open Netwo...rk for Water-Related Diseases) is dedicated to forecasting, early warning & risk mapping for water-associated diseases through use of remote sensing, field observations & mathematical modelling. Our vision is to enable cost-effective, regularly updated, geo-referenced early warning for areas vulnerable to water-associated diseases, which in turn will enable preventive measures to be deployed in a timely manner to minimise the probability of epidemics. Our long-term vision is to establish a system that will be applicable broadly, in a variety of localities & for a variety of diseases. By 'water-associated' disease, we mean a rather broad class, including diarrhoeal diseases such as cholera, skin diseases associated with water-borne bacteria or metazoan parasites, vector-borne diseases such as malaria & dengue fever, & others such as hepatitis. The 'water' involved may be fresh, or brackish or coastal seawater. The network will respond primarily the GCRF Challenge of Global Health (infectious diseases), & secondarily to that of Resilience to Environmental Shocks & Change (since outbreaks of water-associated diseases are affected by extreme weather events, expected to become more frequent as a result of climate change). The network will also address UN Sustainable Development Goal 3, Target 3d, to 'Strengthen the capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction & management of national & global health risks.' According to the World Health Organisation, some two billion people use faecally-contaminated drinking water, putting them at risk of death or chronic poor health from water-borne infectious diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid & polio. Provision of safe drinking water is hostage to the influence of extreme weather & flooding. Apart from the fatalities, the effect of a chronic burden of lower-level infection by water-associated diseases is antagonistic to the maintenance of a healthy work force & to the well-being of society in general, to the detriment of sustainable development. For example, cholera kills an estimated 95,000 people every year, but it also makes another 2.9 million seriously ill with a debilitating disease. Hence the need to address, in addition, the resilience of communities to perturbations of the safe drinking water supply under extreme weather events associated with a changing climate. Before now, our ability to develop early warning, risk reduction & management of national & global health risks due to water-associated diseases has been limited by mutual isolation of the scientific communities whose collective effort is required to make progress. Information about SARS-CoV-2 l...evels circulating in the community is an essential part of developing an effective strategy to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 globally. Testing of individuals is time consuming, costly and currently does not capture a large proportion of the population. Wastewater monitoring of SARS-CoV-2, shed in faeces from infected individuals, including asymptomatic cases, provides an alternative approach. It has distinct benefits, obviating community sampling bias, and providing a cheap, non-invasive process to determine the level of infection in a large community within a single sample. However, this method cannot be directly implemented in many developing regions where wastewater is released into the environment without any treatment. Such pollution raises concerns about the environment-based transmission of the disease, which has not been studied. Our project aims to assess the prevalence of COVID-19 in two sub-Saharan countries, South Africa and Nigeria, using wastewater-based epidemiology and environmental surveillance. We will measure SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations to investigate the spread of COVID-19 at a community level. We will also assess the occurrence of other, common and emerging virus strains (e.g. enteroviruses, measles and influenza) to evaluate the effect of lockdown measures on the transmission of viral diseases. We will also determine the health risks associated with polluted environments using infectivity assays and determine the most common SARS-CoV-2 variants circulating in each country using environmental metaviromics. Working alongside public health stakeholders, our findings will allow enhanced decision making on the containment of COVID-19 and achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6 and 11.

The project will increase acce...ss to water supply and sanitation, improving the health and quality of life of the rural population in six selected provinces in the central coastal region of Viet Nam. The project will support the government in implementing its Socioeconomic Development Plan, 2006-2010, including reducing poverty to 10%-11% of households by 2010. In so doing, it will help the government to achieve the Vietnamese Millennium Development Goals. The project will provide piped water and hygienic sanitation to about 350,000 people living in rural areas. The project has a strong poverty focus and its design is based on lessons from previous interventions in the sector. The implementation will follow a community-based approach and will focus on (i) improving hygienic behavior, (ii) strengthening operation and maintenance of the water supply works, and (iii) monitoring and evaluation of the outputs and impacts of rural water supply and sanitation investments.

Output one: develop an approac...h to end child marriage that can be delivered at scale in Ethiopia. The inception report detailing plans for implementation will build on the Berhane Hewan programme experience of community transformation to end child marriage and draw on other examples of good practice to create a model for large-scale implementation and eventual sustainability. An evidence base which demonstrates the economic returns and value for money from investing in the proposed approach to end child marriage will be developed.
Output two: strengthened government capacity to design, plan, implement, monitor and finance the programme at scale. Particular attention will be given to strengthening government systems and staff to ensure sustainability. Participatory approaches to planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation will be used. A robust, low tech, low cost and manageable performance monitoring system will be developed. Issues such as the roles of different stakeholders, approaches to facilitator and mentor training, cost effectiveness and quality will explored and addressed. Operational research will be conducted to build the evidence-base on what works to end child marriage

Output one: develop an approac...h to end child marriage that can be delivered at scale in Ethiopia. The inception report detailing plans for implementation will build on the Berhane Hewan programme experience of community transformation to end child marriage and draw on other examples of good practice to create a model for large-scale implementation and eventual sustainability. An evidence base which demonstrates the economic returns and value for money from investing in the proposed approach to end child marriage will be developed.
Output two: strengthened government capacity to design, plan, implement, monitor and finance the programme at scale. Particular attention will be given to strengthening government systems and staff to ensure sustainability. Participatory approaches to planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation will be used. A robust, low tech, low cost and manageable performance monitoring system will be developed. Issues such as the roles of different stakeholders, approaches to facilitator and mentor training, cost effectiveness and quality will explored and addressed. Operational research will be conducted to build the evidence-base on what works to end child marriage

The project will remove physic...al and capacity constraints impeding tourism development in Champassak, Khammouane, Luangprabang, and Oudomxay?four provinces situated astride the GMS Central Corridor. It will contribute to the creation of 27,000 tourism-related jobs in the Lao PDR by: (i) paving 70 kilometers (km) of rural roads to open new areas for private tourism investment and improve access to markets and social services for 15,000 people; (ii) improving environmental services in areas important for cross-border tourism to reduce public health hazards for 35,000 residents and 2.4 million annual visitors, beginning in 2019; and (iii) facilitating business support services for at least 500 small and medium-sized enterprises.3 The project will strengthen regional cooperation and integration by implementing regional tourism standards, promoting multicountry tour circuits, and supporting structured policy dialogue to reduce nonphysical barriers to travel. The project investment plan is in line with the GMS Tourism Sector Strategy,4 and the government?s National Tourism Strategy, 2012?2020.
