Esta estrecha relación con las experiencias de la salud y la enfermedad permite a la enfermería organizar los cuidados, ser el aglutinante en la institución y defender e influir en las políticas a todos los niveles, en un proceso y una relación diferentes a los de cualquier otra profesión de la salud. La enfermería contribuye a la salud y a la atención sanitaria en colaboración con muchos colegas profesionales de la salud, con los pacientes, las familias y las comunidades y con aquellos cuyo trabajo es complementario al de la enfermera o depende de ella.
