En 2020, como resultado de la pandemia mundial, el 93% de los países comunicaron que sus servicios de salud mental se habían detenido o interrumpido (OMS, 2020e). La OMS ha denunciado un incremento del 25% solo en las tasas de depresión y ansiedad durante la pandemia. La Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económicos estima que el coste de la depresión y la ansiedad para la economía mundial asciende a 1 billón de dólares estadounidenses al año. Todas las enfermeras tienen una función de prestación de cuidados en materia de salud mental y consumo de sustancias.
