Yemen Humanitarian Update Covering 7-21 March 2019 Issue 5
As Yemen enters its fifth year of conflict, the UN has reported a rise in the number of suspected cholera cases in the country over the past few weeks. It said the spike may be related to early rains, but also could be due to an increased awareness of the disease and willingness to seek treatment, meaning more patients are counted in official statistics. A decimated health system, poor sanitation, and lack of clean water have contributed to several waves of the disease since Yemen’s war began in March 2015. The worst outbreak killed more than 2,500 people at its height in 2017.
