When war breaks out in cities, the complexity and interconnectedness of the urban environment poses many problems for civilians. For persons with disabilities, the impact can be even worse and aggravate existing barriers and risks. Armed forces, authorities, first responders, humanitarian actors and... other persons living in the city itself need to be aware of the specific risks that persons with disabilities face so they can help to reduce them. This factsheet draws attention to some of the biggest risks and makes recommendations on how National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies could better identify what support persons with disabilities need and incorporate this support into their own operations. It also makes recommendations for how National Societies could promote disability-inclusive interpretations and implementation of international humanitarian law among parties to armed conflict.

This document focus on the direct consequences of the virus (morbidity and mortality) in specific populations and on the results of measures aimed at mitigating the spread of the virus, with indirect impacts on socio-economic conditions. In this complex scenario, the gender approach has not received... due attention during the pandemic. Gender is one of the structural determinants of health, but it does not appear in analyses of the direct and indirect effects of the pandemic, despite being essential in the recognition and analysis of the differential impacts on men and women and their interaction with the different determinants of health.

Following flood levels of the hydrological stations monitored in Niamey (Niger Republic) and Malan Ville (Benin Republic) reaching the red alert zone, torrential rainfall and ensuing floods affected 91,254 people or 15,209 households in Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, Sokoto, and Zamfara state (amongst other ...states) of Nigeria on 6 October 2020. The flood incident was caused by the intensity of the rainfalls at the peak of the flood season and the release of dams located in neighbouring Niger, Cameroon, and Benin, which resulted in the Benue and Niger rivers overflowing and affecting communities living along their banks and in surrounding areas.
