more
|
Supporting Transformation by R...educing Insecurity and Vulnerability with Economic Strengthening (STRIVE)
more
|
Supporting Transformation by R...educing Insecurity and Vulnerability with Economic Strengthening (STRIVE) focuses on strengthening economic security for vulnerable children. Conflict, extreme economic stress, natural disasters and the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS contribute to the increasing number of orphans and other vulnerable children worldwide. These children have been the focus of innumerable programs that address their health, educational, psychosocial and security needs. While many programs provide excellent noneconomic support to such children, rarely do they adequately address the issue of economic insecurity. STRIVE identifies and demonstrates effective and sustainable ways to improve the economic circumstances of vulnerable children. Managed by FHI 360, STRIVE implements field projects that use an array of economic-strengthening approaches, ranging from savings-led finance to workforce development to value chain interventions. Coupled with a robust monitoring and evaluation framework and learning strategy, STRIVE tracks and documents the impact of interventions on childrens economic (financial) and noneconomic (health, education and nutrition) well-being.

The Comprehensive Assistance, ...Support and Empowerment of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (CASE-OVC) programme is a five year, USAID-funded grant implemented by Christian Aid in Kenya. The programme aims to reach 170,000 orphans and vulnerable children, from 52,000 households, who are affected or infected by HIV and AIDS. The goal is to improve the well-being of the children by ensuring they can request and gain access to social services (health, nutrition, education, legal protection, psychosocial support and social protection). We are also working to improve their livelihood options to better care for themselves.

Activities are aimed at improv...ing the lives of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) affected by HIV/AIDS, and doing so in a measurable way. Services to children (0-17 years) should be based on the actual needs of the child and could include ensuring access to basic education (from early childhood development through secondary level); broader health care services; targeted food and nutrition support, including support for safe infant feeding and weaning practices; protection and legal aid; economic strengthening; training of caregivers in HIV prevention and home-based care; etc. Household-centered approaches that link OVC services with HIV-affected families (linkages with PMTCT, palliative care, treatment, etc.) and strengthen the capacity of the family unit (caregiver) are included along with strengthening community structures (schools, churches, clinics, child protection committees, etc.) that protect and promote healthy child development and investments in local and national government capacity to identify, monitor and track childrens well-being. Programs may be included which strengthen the transition from residential OVC care to more family-centered models. (See the OVC Technical Considerations and OVC Guidance for further details). It is important that funding for OVC is not double-counted in pediatric care activities.

The main goal of the USAID/Moz...ambiques Strengthening Family and Community Support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (SFCS-OVC) activity is to reduce the socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS on OVC and their caregivers. The overall objective is to enhance the capacity of families and communities to support, protect, and care for OVC and caregivers. The activity will take a family-centered approach and offer a set of services that will strengthen families and communities to help OVC transition from childhood and adolescence to young adulthood, ensuring that they are AIDS-free, healthy, educated, and prepared to contribute to Mozambiques development. The intermediate results of the activity are: 1) Strengthened coordination and harmonization of care, protection and support services for OVC households at the district and community level; 2) Increased access to education and improved learning outcomes for OVC; 3) Increased access to healthcare and nutritional support for OVC and caregivers; 4) Improved coping mechanisms for OVC and caregivers; and 5) Improved socio-economic status of OVC households.

|
Local Partners for Orphan and ...Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Nigeria (LOPIN) Region 3 is a five-year, United State Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded project aimed at mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS on children, households and families in Cross River and Ebonyi States. The project is focused on community-based, result-oriented and family focused interventions to increase capacity of local organizations and communities to positively respond to the needs of OVCs. LOPIN-3 is implemented by Health Initiatives for Safety and Stability in Africa (HIFASS) as the lead partner among other local consortium members which include People-To-People Health Foundation Nigeria (PPHFN), Calabar Arch-Diocesan Action Committee on AIDS (CAACA) and Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, Succour and Development Services Initiatives (SUCCDEV). The Project has two strategic objectives: (i) To improve systems and structures at state, LGAs and communities to ensure provision of quality care, protection and support services to OVC and their households. The LOPIN 1 Project is a 5 yea...rs (August 2014 to August 2019) USAID funded project aimed at mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS and other forms of vulnerability on children and their households. LOPIN is an accelerated and sustainable approach to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on children and caregivers. It is designed to model inclusiveness in programming for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in selected states in the country in accordance with the National Priority Agenda. A critical component of the project is at the community level, where CBOs and CPCs have key roles in identifying and enrolling OVCs and vulnerable households and linking OVCs to services in health, education, nutrition and psychosocial support services. CBOs, with the support of the LGAs are also expected to guide the communities in Household economic empowering activities and to provide oversight for other activities in the communities, reporting accordingly to the LGA Social Welfare Officer, who in turn report to the State Desk officers in the State Ministries of Women Affairs. CBOs will be provided grants to conduct these critical interventions. Another innovation of the project is the secondment of ARFH LOPIN staff (State Programme Coordinators and State M&E Officers) to the State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide coaching, mentorship and hand holding in service provision as well as in the collection, validation of data. The project will also focus on strengthening stakeholders capacity to provide services as well as Public Private Partnership involvement.

NACCW will support the Departm...ent of Social Development (DSD) to create safe and caring families that meet children needs through the delivery of high quality community based services provided by trained child and youth care workers (CYCW). NACCW will provide technical support to DSD to roll out and scale up the Isibindi model in a standardized way to meet the needs of OVC. In collaboration with the DSD in all nine provinces, NACCW will train and mentor new CYC workers in providing prevention, early intervention and child protection services to OVC. The Isibindi model is a comprehensive OVC response to provide essential community based services to OVC. Aligned to Government policy the model responds holistically to childrens needs while at the same time developing and strengthening the social service workforce serving children. The model trains and employs community based CYCW to supervise child and youth headed households while also providing tailored developmental and therapeutic support to children living in other vulnerable households.

The purpose of this contract i...s to enhance the South African Government (GoSA), specifically the Department of Social Development (DSD), in supporting Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) by strengthening the DSDs response in addressing the social and structural barriers that increase the vulnerability of OVC to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Tuberculosis (TB) and address specific constraints hampering the health and social welfare system to achieve better outcomes for OVC and other vulnerable children (e.g. those affected by child abuse, neglect and exploitation). Specifically, the GCDS will support to the DSD to achieve the following three objectives: (1) Improve timely availability of reliable data on program performance monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and information on the social effects of HIV and AIDS and other vulnerabilities faced by children (such as child abuse, neglect and exploitation); (2) Strengthen coordination, management and oversight of community care service structures that protect and care for the most vulnerable children and the families that care for them; and (3 )Strengthen inter-sector integration and coordination between DSD and other GoSA Departments such as Health and Education and build a supportive multi-sector environment led by DSD for vulnerable children through system strengthening at the national and provincial level.
