The project will remove physic...al and capacity constraints impeding tourism development in Champassak, Khammouane, Luangprabang, and Oudomxay?four provinces situated astride the GMS Central Corridor. It will contribute to the creation of 27,000 tourism-related jobs in the Lao PDR by: (i) paving 70 kilometers (km) of rural roads to open new areas for private tourism investment and improve access to markets and social services for 15,000 people; (ii) improving environmental services in areas important for cross-border tourism to reduce public health hazards for 35,000 residents and 2.4 million annual visitors, beginning in 2019; and (iii) facilitating business support services for at least 500 small and medium-sized enterprises.3 The project will strengthen regional cooperation and integration by implementing regional tourism standards, promoting multicountry tour circuits, and supporting structured policy dialogue to reduce nonphysical barriers to travel. The project investment plan is in line with the GMS Tourism Sector Strategy,4 and the government?s National Tourism Strategy, 2012?2020.

Malaria prevalence is still ve...ry high in Lao (People's Democratic Republic), Counterfeit and substandard medicines, especially antimalarial drugs, are a serious problem. The overall goals of the program are to improve the quality of medicines for the treatment of malaria at health facilities, and to reduce the use of counterfeit and substandard antimalarial drugs and related antibiotics. The program is achieving these goals by strengthening the capacity of relevant institutions and departments in combating counterfeit medicines and thereby contributing to the effective treatment of malaria in Lao (People's Democratic Republic). Grant monies are spent on intensifying inspections of private pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and public health facilities. The program is also strengthening the country's drug registration system for antimalarial drugs and other medicinal products. In addition, the National Laboratory of Food and Drug Quality Control Centre has been fortified in national quality assurance testing of counterfeit and substandard antimalarials and other drugs. The program is also using the grant to educate public and private providers on the presence of counterfeit and substandard medicines and the rational use of antimalarial drugs.

IMPROVEMENT SOCIO EDUCATIONAL ...DEVELOPMENT OF VULNERABLE CHILDHOOD

Improvement socio educational ...development of vulnerable childhood

|

Ethiopia is challenged by an i...ncreasing number of OVCs. The number of orphans from AIDS is still very significant, estimated at 886,820 (in 2006), out of an estimated total of 5.5 million orphans. Of the total number of orphans, only few get the critical care and support they need. The intervention addresses the various socio-economic problems of children who lost one or both of their parents to HIV/AIDS.

The Global Fund thus provides grants to local development programmes while working together with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGO s), the private sector, development agencies and the communities affected by these diseases.

Voice. Restless Development Ta...nzania has been building on the recent successes in their
campaigning and advocacy initiatives, most recently in ensuring youth voice influenced the
Constitution Review in 2015 as well as in supporting young people to register to vote in the 2016
national election process.
Kijana Wajibika (Youth be Responsible) is a ground-breaking initiative, which builds a movement of
young people who are well informed on civic rights and actively engaged in political processes. The
initiative uses our proven and successful youth-led, data-driven accountability model, which places
young people at the centre of development and governance processes and provides a platform to
empower youth in Tanzania to hold government to account.
Living: This is a ‘gateway’ programming area and priority for young Tanzanians. Through projects
such as Mabinti Tushike Hatamu (Girls, Let’s Be Leaders), Kizazi Kipya (New Generation), the East
African Youth Inclusion programme, and work with the Mastercard Foundation, young people receive
training and mentorship to build employability and entrepreneurship skills, business planning skills
and financial literacy - particularly focusing on reaching otherwise excluded young women and girls.
Sexual Rights : Our Mabinti Tushike Hatamu programme integrates gender-focused livelihoods work
with Sexaul Reproductive Health actions; while the programme - delivered nationally in partnership
with Population Services International - aims to increase young people’s access to family planning
services, Gender Based Vionlence (GBV) referrals and to work with health facilities to strengthen
youth-friendly service provision.
Our Kizazi Kipya project seeks to enable more Tanzanian orphans and vulnerable children to utilize
age-appropriate HIV/AIDS-related services for improved care, education, protection, livelihoods and
psychosocial well-being.

The Child Protection Fund's go...al is to realize the basic rights of the most vulnerable children in Zimbabwe through provision of critical child protection interventions within a child and HIV-sensitive social protection framework. It builds on the CPF Phase I (2011-2016), adopting a multi-dimensional approach to child vulnerability which simultaneously addresses household poverty, gender disparities, disability, HIV and risk of violence, exploitation and abuse. Taking lessons from CPF I and II, this third phase of CPF has a stronger focus on violence reduction through prevention, information management and governance structures and capacity. The third phase does not include cash transfer.Through a theory of change developed for CPF III, the programme aims to ensure that children, families and communities access improved preventive and responsive child protection services reinforced by household and community economic resilience in targeted areas. An increasing body of evidence about violence against children in Zimbabwe shows that violence is widespread and cuts across age, gender, and socio-economic status. There are many interlinked causes that include: family dislocation and an absence of positive parenting due to temporary migration, a high caseload of single and double orphans which is a legacy of the HIV pandemic, a propensity for resolving disputes violently that stems from generally high levels of trauma and stress in the country, overcrowded living conditions and high dependency ratios due to poverty and jobless-ness, children witnessing sexual relations from a very young age, and widespread unhealthy adolescent relationships in which negative coping strategies such as transactional sex are common, and in which regressive gender norms mixed with substance abuse generate high levels of intimate partner violence. This project is co-funded with the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and DFID.

The region of southern Africa ...holds the sad record of housing the largest number of orphans in the world. Together with armed conflicts and poverty, HIV/AIDS – which can wipe out entire generations –has a major impact on the living conditions and psychological and social wellbeing of children in this part of the world. Deprivation, abuse, early and forced marriages, having to take care of siblings or sick parents, are all part of daily life here. Since 2002, a regional initiative aimed at providing psycho-social support has been trying to provide these children with hope and self-confidence.

Through SDC's contribution, an...d strong partnership with the provincial Departments of Education in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) and the Eastern Cape (EC), the 'Learn About Healthy Living' project started in 2001, aiming at curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS materials were introduced and tested in 1'320 schools in both provinces, defining an effective intervention within school communities and followed by training of educators in the use of those materials. Strong management and governance teams were established and equipped with skills to develop policies and strategies that would enable them to cope with the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS, particularly on care of OVC. In both phases, emphasis was placed on community participation and on responding to the communities' prioritised needs. A wide range of community stakeholders were involved in participatory audit and needs analyses processes, putting in place strategies for meeting prioritised development needs. Through these processes, communities identified the need to reduce the negative impact of HIV/AIDS and better care for OVC was prioritised. The main objective of this phase is capacity building and support for school clusters to lead community strategies that respond to HIV/AIDS and improve care for OVC. It will involve implementing a more intensive and holistic HIV/AIDS programme that promotes self-reliant school clusters and community structures which can deal specifically with issues around HIV/AIDS.
