• Designated as the Executiv...e Agent for Department of Defense (DoD) HIV support for foreign militaries in 2001, DHAPP also is the DoD implementing agency for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), established in 2003. In coordination with the Department of State, US Agency for International Development, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Peace Corps, the PEPFAR team works together to mitigate the HIV pandemic and stop the spread of the AIDS virus.
The DHAPP Management Office at NHRC provides day-to-day direction along with operational and functional oversight of the DoD effort. DHAPP coordinates activities with the Department of State Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator and implements the DoD programs in the PEPFAR initiative. DHAPP also prepares and delivers periodic reports and assessments to the Assistance Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and/or designated Deputy Assistant of Secretary Defense (DASD).
In fiscal year 2013, DHAPP trained over 7,000 health care workers to provide HIV clinical services; reached over 740,000 military and family members with comprehensive prevention messages; 630,000 military and family members were counseled and tested for HIV; 55,000 pregnant women knew their HIV status based on testing and counseling services; and 200 new laboratories were equipped and supported for HIV testing and diagnostics.

BRIDGE II - HIV/AIDS
|
BRIDGE II - HIV/AIDS
|
BRIDGE II is a USAID-funded fi...ve-year strategic, evidence-based communication program that encourages Malawians in 11 districts in the southern region of Malawi to adopt behaviors that prevent HIV transmission. BRIDGE II aims to reduce new HIV infections through eliminating barriers to individual action and shifting social norms. It addresses key risk factors for HIV in Malawi such as having more than one sexual partner at a time, lack of condom use, and alcohol abuse. Gender norms and inequities often lie beneath these risky behaviors, and BRIDGE II openly addresses these issues. A multi-sectoral project with a strong community focus, BRIDGE works directly through creative multi-media campaigns, transformative and participatory toolkits (like the Hope Kit, PDF), interactive radio programs, service referral and linkages, and community theater. BRIDGE also builds local capacity by providing support to community and faith-based networks to strengthen their HIV prevention programs. The goal is lasting, positive change that not only prevents new HIV infections, but also strengthens the ability of Malawis communities to care for and protect themselves.

Roads to a Healthy Future II (...ROADS II) - Mozambique - HIV/AIDS
more
|
Under the ROADS to a Healthy F...uture (ROADS II) project, FHI 360 works to reduce HIV transmission among people who live and work along major highways that connect Mozambique to neighboring countries. The project uses locally relevant social change approaches to reach people who are at high risk of HIV infection, such as truck drivers, traders and staff in bars and lodgings. ROADS II mobilizes these communities to adopt safer sexual behaviors such as correct and consistent condom use, challenge cultural norms that perpetuate HIV vulnerability, and increase utilization of health services. The project helps strengthen the capacity of the government, civil society and the private sector to deliver comprehensive HIV services for people at high risk of HIV infection and to create an enabling environment for service expansion. The project also aims to expand nontraditional HIV counseling and testing for hard-to-reach populations and to strengthen linkages to other HIV and broader health services.
