Awakening Deaf Youth and Adult...s to Fight and Prevent COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS
more
|
Through the educational measur...es and materials for deaf people, both COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS prevalence among people with handicap should be minimized. Deaf youth and adults should have equal access to prevention measueres and medical consultations. The sensitisation of the prevention centers and counselling institutions to the special needs of deaf people should lead to better inclusion of this group in Mozambique in the long term.

|
UK Vaccine Network - Future Va...ccine Manufacturing Research Hub Competition
more
|
The Prime Minister established... the UK Vaccine Network in June 2015 to ensure that the UK was at the forefront of the global fight against future disease outbreaks. The UK Vaccine Network has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in low and middle income countries (LMICs) for which the development of Vaccine Products is a priority. The UKVN also advised that research to improve vaccine manufacturing should be a priority. The Department of Health and Social Care collaborated with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) (a non-departmental public body principally funded through the Science Budget by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) to run the Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub competition. The competition was open to all eligible research organisations that could demonstrate that their work would contribute towards Vaccine Manufacturing Research specifically for the benefit of LMICs. £17million of funding was made available to EPSRC to fund two successful projects. This funding was provided under the provisions of the International Development Act 2002.This funding supports two projects which seek to: develop tools and technologies that allow for easier and quicker manufacturing of vaccines in emergencies, redesign existing vaccines to make them cheaper and easier to manufacture and easier to deliver in low and middle income countries (LMIC) settings and to provide bespoke support for researchers developing vaccines for diseases with epidemic potential, so that the vaccines they are developing are as rapid and cost-effective to manufacture as possible. The projects are expected to collaborate with LMIC researchers and industry to support this work.

This Program seeks to strength...en the capacity of people living with HIV AIDS (PLWHA) in Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama through a social-community approach. One of the main objectives of the Program is to continue the development of risk profiles of PLWHA to determine their current situation in the region. The Program will involve monitoring the social impact of the national integrated approaches to HIV and AIDS. This will complement, from the community viewpoint, the objectives of the national government strategies to HIV and AIDS. The goal of this Program is to expand and consolidate the development and strengthening of technical and professional skills of PLWHA in Central America, to effectively participate in political advocacy, social monitoring and citizen inspection process in HIV and AIDS and influence the human development and quality of life of their peers in Central America. This is a consolidation of Round 10 and Round 7 HIV grants.

REINFORCING THE SCALING UP OF ...HIV SERVICES: STRENGTHENING HIV PREVENTION AND EFFECTIVE TARGETING

Reinforcing the Scaling Up of ...HIV Services: Strengthening HIV Prevention and Effective Targeting
more

Ghana has a generalized HIV ep...idemic with pockets of high prevalence among most-at-risk populations, namely men having sex with men and their female partners, female sex workers, prison inmates, most-at-risk youth (15-24), workers (miners, uniformed services, transport workers), and vulnerable groups such as young boys and girls and female porters, as well as population in some geographic areas which are disproportionally affected by the epidemic. The prevalence rate has remained stable and below 5% over the past 16 years. The current national prevalence is 1.9% and prevalence among pregnant women is 2.6% (2007 sentinel surveillance report: National AIDS Control Program/Ghana Health Services). This Program addresses gaps in the national response such as 1) superficial understanding of HIV in many segments of the population including youth, and an inability to move people from general knowledge and awareness of risk to actually adopting safer behaviors; 2) insufficient targeting of most-at-risk populations (MARPS) and vulnerable groups; 3) slow integration of HIV/AIDS and Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH); 4) shortfalls in institutional and community capacities to rapidly scale-up comprehensive HIV services. Recognizing that clients of most-at-risk populations serve as a bridge between most-at-risk populations and general population in HIV transmission, this Program combines the targeting of interventions to MARPS and vulnerable groups and the targeting of the general population. As part of health system strengthening measures directly related to HIV services, this Program targets blood safety, Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), early infant diagnosis, and integration of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) services. As part of strengthening national health system in its response to HIV epidemic and emphasize the need of stronger partnerships between the public health sector, civil society and private sector, this Program will be implemented by multiple Principal Recipients: Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Services and Ghana AIDS Commission (public sector), Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (civil society), Adventist Development and Relief Agency of Ghana (faith-based organization), and Ghana Employers' Association (private sector) which will become Principal Recipient in Phase 2 of the Program.

The Stop Trans boundary Animal... Disease and Zoonoses (STANDZ) Initiative (2011-2015) combines on-going support to two programs of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the South East Asia and China Foot and Mouth Disease Program and the Strengthening Initiatives for Veterinary Services, formerly known as the Project on Strengthening Veterinary Services to Combat Avian Influenza and Other Priority Diseases in South East Asia. The goal of the STANDZ Initiative is to reduce the impact of emerging infectious diseases on food security, public health and livelihoods in South East Asia and will strengthen the capacity of animal health sectors in South East Asian countries for the prevention, control and eradication of priority Trans boundary Animal Diseases and Zoonoses. The Initiative will provide OIE with more resources and some flexibility to: support priority countries' national efforts in FMD control; provide emergency assistance to countries during FMD outbreaks; and assist national veterinary services systems strengthening. STANDZ work will be consistent with country national plans, the regional 2020 Roadmap, and OIE international standards. STANDZ will work in partnership with governments and other international players in targeting capacity building of partner government systems. The total value of this multi-country initiative is $12.9 million over 6 years, starting 2010-11.

HIV Cross Border Initiative
|
The Southern African Developme...nt Community (SADC) is a fifteen member regional intergovernmental organization aimed at increasing regional socio-economic integration, intended to yield greater economic growth and poverty alleviation. Its member states include Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. SADC covers a region where over one-third of all people living with HIV reside, and accost where almost one-third of all new HIV infections and one-third of AIDS-related deaths occur. This grant aims to reduce HIV infections in the SADC region and to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on mobile populations and affected communities across member states. The program activities include facilitation of cooperation agreements amongst facilities at border sites to support mobile populations, development of standards, guidelines and protocols for patient follow-up and referral mechanisms, standardization of case detection and reporting systems and development of a study on Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) continuum of care.

Egypt appears to have a relati...vely low HIV prevalence with estimations below 0.1 percent among the adult population, but little is known about either the size of the most-at-risk populations or the prevalence of HIV among them. Given the steady increase in the number of people with high-risk behavior and the rapid changes in the Egyptian socio-cultural context, it is feared that HIV and AIDS may soon emerge as a major public health problem. The main goal of the program funded by this grant is to maintain the low levels of HIV overall, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations (women, youth, street children, uniformed services, prisoners and refugees) and the most-at-risk populations (sex workers, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men). This is to be achieved by conducting representative studies among those populations most at risk of HIV infection and strengthening national capacities to fight HIV and AIDS through training and additional recruitment, with an emphasis on strengthening monitoring and evaluation resources.

Funding under this initiative ...will provide support to the Fiji National University (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences (formerly known as the Fiji School of Medicine (FSMed) to implement its 2012-2016 Strategic Plan. The plan focuses on enhancing FSMed's capacity to: collaborate with other institutions and respond to health research and training needs in the Pacific; improve training programs to address non-communicable diseases epidemic; developing health information systems; improving maternal and child health interventions; improve access to trained medical specialists; provide evidence-based health research to guide policy and decision making; and improve leadership in health and wellness across the Pacific region. In 2015/16, DFAT's support will assist FNU CMNHS to strengthen its postgraduate training programs, collaboration with other Pacific training institutions to map health and medical education courses and identify areas of standardisation and pathways to undertaking postgraduate training programs at FNU CMNHS, and supporting internship training programs in Kiribati and other countries in the region. The total value of this initiative is $7.5 million over 6 years, starting 2011-12.

REINFORCING THE SCALING UP OF ...HIV SERVICES: STRENGTHENING HIV PREVENTION AND EFFECTIVE TARGETING
more
|
|
