Building Capacity for HIV Work... in Africa
more
|
The overall objective of this ...project is to increase the capacity of HIV work by Bible Societies in Africa. Specifically this project aims to build capacity of country teams on implementation of the core Good Samaritan module the family module and inclusion of persons with disabilities. The project also seeks to increase accountability through specific harmonized procedures.United Bible Societies HIV work in Africa is implemented under the Good Samaritan Program (GSP) currently implemented in 16 Sub-Saharan African countries. The overall objective of GSP is to contribute to the reduction of the spread of HIV and stigma of people infected and affected. HIV Service was set up by UBS to coordinate activities of participating Bible Societies building synergy among them so that together their results have a significant impact on the continent. HIV Service is currently funded by governmental development funds from MFA and DigniNorway and by Bible Societies of Finland Sweden Norway Denmark Canada and UK.During the previous phase the project increased capacity of HIV Coordinators and assistants on gender integration continued to enhance capacity for regional work by initiating joint learning workshops provided implementation support for sustainability strategies through initiation of meetings with potential partners and increased capacity of HIV Service staff in Grant management Auditing and Monitoring and Evaluation. Awareness and teaching about gender equality is a cross cutting issue in the GSP. Discussions to address gender inequality are initiated during the training using group discussion questions based on case studies flipchart pictures and the LSM film one which is titled African traditions favour men not women. GSP has been widely accepted and requested by various community leaders including from the Muslim community because of its value and rights based approach. Biblical values have been the change agent towards the reduction of stigma. GSP is not limited to faith-based organizations and has had requests from government departments schools and other non-governmental organizations to conduct trainings.

The Purpose of the project is ...to increase the competence of Church leaders in response to the spread of HIV and AIDS in the community and improve caring of People Living with HIV in Burundi. The project will facilitate the awareness raising on the rights of all people to reduce stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. The project will be implemented by the Fida partner in Burundi. The partner in this project is the Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU) the project will target Church leaders who will benefit from the project's capacity building through trainings. Due to the increased myths and misconception on HIV and AIDS in the community, people living with HIV/AIDS have encountered inhuman treatment from other members of the society. Stigma and discrimination has so far hindered the process of HIV Prevention because people fear to go for HIV testing to know about their status. To respond effectively to this challenge, empowering Church leaders who have respected positions in the community can reduce discrimination of people living with HIV and AIDS and enhance the knowledge on HIV and AIDS. During the implementation process, the project will enhance HIV and AIDS responses in the community by creating awareness and training Church leaders on the basic facts of HIV/AIDS. The project will sensitize the community through community forums and church Meetings. The projects activities will involve top Church leaders training, Training of trainers, formulation of HIV and AIDS materials, distribution of HIV materials to the trained Church leaders, formulation of HIV and AIDS policy, establishment of support groups of people living with HIV and AIDS and support to Orphans and vulnerable Children in their education. The goal of this project is to contribute to the reduction of the spread of HIV in the community and improve the wellbeing of people living with HIV and AIDS. Through a Just, safe and caring Church/partner, people infected and affected by HIV will have relief and find a safe place where people living with HIV and AIDS will be accommodated and involved in community activities. The society will be transformed to create an HIV and AIDS friendly environment with zero stigmas and zero discrimination. People living with and affected by HIV and AIDS will know their rights and enjoy their wellbeing.

The program aims to reduce the... number of hiv-infections in Ethiopia and improve the living conditions of people living with aids and of orphaned vulnerable children (OVC). The support of the state in the health sector in Kambata-Hadiya Zone is insufficient, and the number of hiv-infections and people living with aids is increasing in spite of awareness-raising efforts. The number of children who have lost one or both of their parents is increasing. The project aims to provide counseling services and support education opportunities for OVCs. In addition, the health situation of people living with aids is monitored, home nursing services will be provided when needed and income generating activities will be created to them according to personal health condition and interest. The direct target population of the project consists of 85 people living with hiv or aids and 100 orphaned vulnerable children. Indirect beneficiaries are their families. The implementing agency is the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus / South Central Synod Development and Social Services Commission (EECMY-DASSC-SCS) in Hossana.

Good Samaritan HIV-project Mal...awi

|
Malawi Good Samaritan HIV proj...ect is part of Africa wide HIV program (GSP) by African Bible Societies that is running in over 20 Sub-Saharan countries. The long term objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of the spread of HIV and stigma of people infected and affected. The main focus is to reduce stigmatization and discrimination of PLHA. The overall objectives of GSP are to strengthen the involvement of churches in response to HIV by enabling people and organizations to: Get knowledge about HIV and AIDS and risky behaviour; Encourage VCT and sexual education; Eradicate stigma and discrimination; Restore PLHA?s human rights dignity and equality and; To renew churches and local congregations' social responsibility. The programme has two main target groups: People with influence as opinion leaders and/or with the capacity to act as facilitators and trainers; and people who are particularly vulnerable to HIV such as the youth women PLHA and married couples. Third phase is especially targeting PVDs as they are one of the most HIV vulnerable groups. Through PVD strategy the aim is to include PVDs to existing structure of activities. The strategy is based on Information Education and Communication with a focus on behavioral change communication and to work with individuals and communities through sharing and providing supportive and enabling environments. The implementation is based on a two tier strategy: (i) advocacy sensitization and mobilization of community&religious leaders; and (ii) conduct training of trainers to reach local communities. The training uses the workshop as a platform to facilitate interaction sharing and reflection to promote change in attitudes and behavior. The programme also encourages the formation of local groups for mutual support and action. Issues of gender will continue to be addressed as was the case in previous phases. Project staff will be equipped with training skills on gender and human dignity since they are key elements in the GS program. Project is implemented in existing structures that include governmental HIV coordination religious networks and local communities. The key project activities include different workshops: training of trainers (ToT) decentralized workshops (DWs) Follow up (FU) Take Charge youth program (TC). There is also an annual capacity building workshops for project staff (Joint Program Review and anglophone capacity building workshop).

F.A: MANWU UNION DEVELOPMENT
|
F.a: MANWU Union Development
|
The project increases the nego...tiation power of the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers' Union MANWU by recruiting 20 000 new members, improving the knowhow of members, activists, officials and leaders and increasing the visibility of the union. The membership of MANWU consists of workers in metal and construction sectors, and the number of members has in three years almost tripled to the current level of 15 000. However, the current potential is 40 000 and numbers of workers are still in the increase. For the union to get to negotiations in more companies, recruitment of members still needs to be continued and intensified. According to the Namibian law each company must have at least half of the workers organized (meaning the so called '50 % +1' rule), in order to gain official recognition for the union as negotiation partner. Most of the agreements are at company level and national minimum levels are a rarity. MANWU is therefore a pioneer influencing the entire negotiation system that has managed to negotiate national minimum level for the construction sector. Now the objective is to achieve the same in the metal sector, but this requires wider company level coverage. Through the project MANWU also aims at financial and operational self-sustainability by increasing its membership and intensifying dues collection. The increased negotiation power and improved knowhow produce better collective agreements, improve the quality of life of workers in terms of income level and occupational health and safety and strengthen the workers' rights awareness. At the same time, the increased membership and improved dues collection make MANWU a more sustainable organization also financially. Beneficiaries are current and new members of MANWU, all workers of these sectors and the leadership and staff of the union. The project is implemented by the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers' Union MANWU.

The majority of the rural popu...lation in target districts is involved in subsistence agriculture. The level of food security and awareness of improved agricultural production techniques and practices is very low. Farmers have not been able to break out of subsistence farming practices (use of traditional techniques and varieties of crops), and consequently productivity is low. Because of lack of functional and viable community structures rights-holders are not able to effectively plan their own development initiatives and request support from duty-bearers. The main objective of the project is to empower communities and community structures (Village Development Committees) with the knowledge and skills to take the lead in addressing the challenges in their own development, and promote higher level of food security of subsistence farmers and communities through development of upland and swamp agriculture (food and cash crops, poultry). Subsistence farmers are trained and supported in new commercial level agro-techniques and practices including environmental conservation techniques, and provided with farming inputs. Expected results:• Village Development Committees' (VDC) are functional and responsive in addressing development issues and communities have increased knowledge and awareness of issues such as peace building, HIV/AIDS, gender equality and environmental management• Food security in target communities has improved through provision of training and farming inputs• Communities perceive farming as a business and have started economically and enviromentally sustainable commercial farming• Partner's poultry farm and Agricultural Demonstration Site is developed into an economically viable entity.Right-holders/ beneficiariesRural poor including the most vulnerable; members of community structuresImplementing partner: Partners in Integrated Community Empowerment Projects (PICEP)

F.a: Inclusive development for... people with disabilities: Supporting the Development of Community Based Rehabilitation in South Africa
more
|
The specific objective of the ...project is to promote an understanding of Community Based Rehabilitation in South Africa as a means of including people with disabilities in development and to advocate for implementation of CBR in both government and civil society initiatives in order to improve the situation of people with disabilitiesIn South Africa many people with disabilities are poor & marginalised. Policy makers & other stakeholders do not understand Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) as a means of disability-inclusive development. The purpose of the project is to promote & advocate for CBR in South Africa so that people with disabilities are included in development. The project begins with a baseline study of CBR in South Africa. CREATE will then run workshops on CBR for therapists, disability NGOs and government officials. CREATE will attempt to improve health outcomes and reduce poverty for people with disabilities by forming and supporting savings groups and running workshops on HIV, sexuality & disability for youth with disabilities & HIV counsellors. CREATE will also attempt to change the attitude of church leaders towards disability by launching an advocacy initiative together with KZNCC (KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council). The project is implemented both in rural and urban areas of KwaZulu-Natal province. The beneficiaries of the project include people who can influence decision-making concerning the development of policies and programmes that may include CBR or have an approach to the inclusion of people with disabilities based on CBR principles. These people include government officials, members of the provincial legislature, senior members of staff of disability-related NGOs and therapists. Teenagers and youth with disabilities, as well as their parents or care takers and other community members, will be beneficiaries of the part of the project that focuses on disability, sexuality and HIV. The project is implemented by CREATE (CBR Education & Training for Empowerment). CREATE focuses on rights-based CBR in South Africa.

F.a: IndustriALL Union Buildin...g through HIV/AIDS Workplace Action, evaluation
more
|
The project reduces effects of... HIV/AIDS among industry workers, mainly in the mining sector. In the project training will be continued for HIV/AIDS support persons who will after work as peer support group leaders. The project also implements information, counseling and testing campaigns at workplace level in cooperation with health care professionals and employers' representatives, covering also the communities around the workplaces. Union leaders and officials are trained about the contents of ILO's recommendation no 200, on the basis of which unions develop their HIV/AIDS programs and policies. The role of the trade union movement in HIV/AIDS work is related on the awareness rising about prevention of infections and on ensuring equal treatment of HIV positive people in working life and trade union activities. Unions are in many countries part of civil society HIV networks, but their special feature is the possibility to reach large groups of workers and their families and to get employers to participate in HIV work. Talking about sensitive issues is usually easier to start with the shop steward or other union friend. The cooperation of unions and health care professionals ensures competent support and assistance to those who need it. For the employer it is a positive asset to have reasonably healthy employees capable of working despite their infection; therefore more and more companies support the unions' counseling and testing campaigns. The companies also contribute to medical care expenses of their workers where the governments do not (yet) guarantee free medication for all citizens. For unions HIV/AIDS campaigns have in many cases been the gate of access to negotiation tables and on the other hand due to their visibility and concrete benefit significant attractions in organising workers to unions. Results of the project are better information, peer support, testing and counseling; dealing with discrimination cases becomes easier; HIV clauses such as health care services and anti-discrimination will be included in collective agreements; as well as wider visibility of unions will affect membership figures positively. Beneficiaries are industrial, especially mine, workers, other residents of mining communities, union members, activists, shop stewards and health and safety representatives in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea and Zambia. The project is implemented by IndustriALL Global Union and its affiliates in the project countries.

F.A: REGIONAL ADVOCACY PROJECT
|
F.a: Regional Advocacy Project
|
The Project Purpose is to incr...ease the engagement of Fida partners in Eastern Africa on advocacy issues through awareness raising and trainings. Advocating for human rights brings about positive changes, strengthening civil society and creating a legitimate space for the protection and promotion of everyone s rights. Inadequate knowledge on advocacy and absence of leadership guidelines in advocacy has hold back the Church partner from advocacy actions. Fida Partners in Eastern Africa are Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK), Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU), Free Pentecostal Church of Tanzania (FPCT), Ethiopian Guenet Church (EGC), Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church (EFGBC), the Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU), Association of Pentecostal Church of Rwanda (ADEPR) and the Pentecostal Churches in Central Africa (CEPAC). The project will be implemented by Fida Eastern Africa Advocacy Programme through these partners. The target groups are the partners and the people who have had their human rights trampled on like people with disabilities, people living with HIV, children and the voiceless. These people are included in the training and articulate the issues themselves ( human rights by people , not only human rights for people ). At the same time, the partners are challenged to advocate for, with and through those whose rights are violated. It is the right of every person to be safe from harm, to be treated fairly and with dignity, to live the life they choose, and to have an active part in their community and wider society. Human rights has to do with core values that is important for all people based on fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy. The project will empower Fida Partners in Eastern Africa through awareness and trainings on advocacy and support them to develop policy guidelines on advocacy interventions. The project will develop training materials to be used by partners in training and conduct trainings on the manual. Partners will be supplied with every necessary material on advocacy responses. The project will monitor and report on the advocacy implementation process. The project aims at contributing to the reduction of violation of human rights through increased involvement of partners in advocating for human rights. The expected impact is that those who were voiceless will have a voice through the empowered partners and their rights honoured. By the end of the program there should be an improvement in the Human Development Indicators, Human Development Index, Gender Inequality Index, and Corruption Perception Index in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Community Development Programm...e. The goal of the project is to decrease the negative effects of migration on communities and families in the Khatlon region of Tajikistan. The main partner of the project is the local village committees, some of which have organized themselves into local NGOs. The project also cooperates closely with the regional Governmental Health Department HIV/AIDS centre. The project has three components: Economic (income generation and financial management training), Health (HIV/AIDS), and Relational (family relationship and peacemaking training). Training is being carried out in each village the project works in on the issues identified by the villages. The peacemaking training focuses on building better family relationships, especially when communication with the men who are working in Russia is very difficult. Through training, local's awareness increase and the eight communities affected by the migration issue in the Khatlon region are equipped to make positive choices in the areas of economics, health and relationships. As the know-how and choices increase in the societies, they will gain a new sense of dignity.

Tanzania is at a crucial stage... of development: high economic growth large findings of natural resources with high potential for revenues key political processes including new constitution (2014) and multi-party elections (2015) high population growth and increasing inequality. Wealth for some but wide-spread poverty for the vast majority combined with special challenges of the most vulnerable groups of society and major environmental problems (deforestation impact of climate change pollution due to extraction of natural resources) are some of the major challenges over the next decade. In this process of change civil society organisations have an important role to play firstly as advocates of the most vulnerable people and on changes needed in terms of policy and implementation and secondly as service providers for vulnerable groups who are without care. However the capacity of NGOs remains low especially in terms of ability to perform advocacy work. There is a need to further increase the capacity and professionalism of NGOs and to strengthen their coordination and cooperation.Key aim of the CISUNET project is to achieve socially and ecologically sustainable development and reduction of poverty. While the first phase (2008-2010) and second phase (2011-2013) prioritized on strengthening the working capacity and networking of local NGOs the third phase (2014-2016) will precedence strengthening the advocacy element of NGO work. It will increase the capability of Tanzanian civil society via community-based NGOs and umbrella NGO TACOSODE to influence policy and decision-making towards reduction of poverty and inequality and to perform advocacy work to improve the situation and rights of the most vulnerable groups (women children people with disabilities people living with HIV/AIDS elderly people unemployed youths etc.). Further the project increases the capacity and networking of Tanzanian NGOs among NGOs themselves and between NGOs and the public and private sectors on a local national and international level. It promotes understanding on issues of globalisation and development among social and health NGOs in Finland and internationally via the global umbrella organisation ICSW thus promoting North-South cooperation. Means of intervention are assessment of local NGOs; training workshops and seminars; regional national and international awareness-raising; provision of IT equipment and internet access to NGO networks.

In the 2017 combined Kirewa-Na...buyoga programme works for the improvement of the quality of life of community members, especially vulnerable children in Kirewa and Nabuyoga areas, East Uganda. The current programme was developed in collaboration with the communities and local government. The programme was based on the discussions, as well as on an evaluation performed in Nabuyoga in 2016 and on a broad national level baseline study conducted by World Vision Uganda. The focus of the programme is livelihoods and resilience, and supporting children's education, rights and participation. It was found in the 2016 Nabuyoga evaluation that 53.9 % of the 12 to 18 year olds do not have basic education (attended the first six years of school). Many problems and challenges are linked to weak economic and livelihoods opportunities. 94 % of the people in Kirewa are farmers but there are still many issues with food security in Kirewa area. In both areas farmers have been supported to mobilize themselves to work as groups and unions, and youth and women have received vocational training and support. In the new programme farmers continue to be trained in effective and sustainable farming methods, food storing and marketing. In addition, the communities will be supported in using sustainable farming methods, FMNR method and savings groups. Education and other service delivery are promoted by community action. Children's school attendance is also supported by making teachers aware about child friendly teaching methods. In the child societies children learn about their rights and get experiences on participation. The Kirewa-Nabuyoga programme benefits 36.000 people in 76 villages. The main partner is World Vision Uganda that runs the implementation and accounts for the use of funding.

There are many challenges conc...erning the realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Uganda. One of them is the deep rooted HIV-epidemic, which reflects the unsufficient usage of condoms, another the amount of sexual abuse and violence that girls and women suffer from. Surveys done by ISF's partner show that Ugandan boys and girls start sexual relationships very early: both boys and girls have their first sex contact around nine years of age. Significant amount of first contacts are sexual violence. The project was implemented in two phases: Phase I 2008-2010 and phase II 2011-2013. According to the evaluation in 2014, the project has been thematically highly relevant. It has impacted positively the lives of the beneficiaries of the project. It has reduced violence against women and children, and especially sexual violence against girls, it has increased children's access to education by reducing school drop outs in Wakiso district and in its two sub counties; Gombe and Busukuma. The main strategy of the project was to increase knowledge and develop positive attitudes and practices through training of girls, boys, women, men and different authorities. The thematic areas of the trainings included equality in gender relations, health, education and organization of the family and community life. The project focused on the elimination of gender based violence in general and had a special focus in reduction of sexual violence and violence against children, specifically girls. The project also contributed to the reduction of teenage pregnancy and improvement of sexual health of children and adults. The purpose of the project was to reduce risky sexual behaviours among boys and girls aged 8–14 years and improve the sexual life of their families and it benefited over 10 000 persons. The project was implemented by ISF's local partner organization Concern for Children and Women Empowerment (COFCAWE).

Northern Uganda has suffered f...rom the consequences of a civil war during two decades. The poverty rates in the area are double compared to the rest of the country and the food insecurity is severe. Now the situation has calmed down in the area and the people have been able to return back to their homelands. Insecurity caused by the civil war and people's flight from their lands made the agricultural production in the area to collapse. The purpose of the project is to support the recovery of the possibilities of making a living of the communities that are returning to the area. The aim is to use natural resources in a sustainable way by improving the water resource management and productivity of the soil. The project improves agricultural productivity and supports households with new forms of making a living. In addition the project deals with promoting gender equality, mitigating the consequences of HIV/AIDS and reducing disputes over land. Beneficiaries, purpose and expected results of the project will be specified during the planning phase that precedes the project implementation phase. The project is implemented by ISF's local partner organization Women and Rural Development Network (WORUDET).

The main objective of the proj...ect is to contribute to the realization of sex workers 'rights, particularly access to justice and access to health services by increasing the awareness of the sex workers' rights of the relevant authorities and health-care providers and the general public. Kash has done similar work for several years in Kisumu, but there is a strong need to continue.Paralegals are trained in the project in order to increase the legal awareness of sex workers and to help the access of sex workers to legal and other aid if necessary. There will be more dialogue between the authorities and the sex workers and sex workers will more easily to get proper service and help, for example form the police, judicial authorities and health professionals, and are less likely to be victims of human rights violations by the authorities. The project will also increase understanding of the challenges that the sex workers are facing and to improve the measures to promote the implementation of their rights. The primary target group of the project are sex workers, and in particular sex workers acting as paralegals, who will be trained during the project and participate in the dialogues with various authorities. The project also provides legal advice in larger number of number of sex workers, as well as support for at least six victims of sexual violence in processing the case. The second target group of the project consists in the police, health authorities and judicial authorities, who will participate in the trainings of the project and discussion forums. The third target group are other organisations, which visit KASH in order to learn how Kash puts into practice the work for the promotion of the rights of sex workers. Keeping Hope Alive Societies Kash was originally established in 2004, as a community-based organization and was registered in 2004 as an NGO. Kash works in western Kenya to promote primarily sex workers and sexual minorities' rights and to reduce the stigma against these groups. Kash promotes the dialogue between the different parties and do advocacy, information and training work to achieve its objectives. Kash cooperates with the police and the health authorities. www.kash.or.ke

UNODC Regional Programme for A...fghanistan and Neighbouring Countries 2016-2019
more
|
Finland supports UNODC Regiona...l Programme for Afghanistan & Neighbouring Countries (2016-2019). The Programme promotes cooperation between Afghanistan and its neighbors namely Iran Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Pakistan Tajikistan Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and supports creating a better common response to countering the destabilizing impact of illicit drugs and crime. The Programme supports the build-up of new approaches strengthens the existing good practices and increases capacity in the region to enable greater counter-narcotics achievements both regionally and globally. Countering cross-border narco-trafficking requires coordinated regional and international measures as acknowledged in many UN Security Council Resolutions and international conferences. Political and practical regional cooperation and finding common solutions is a key in solving the challenges. Drug control is not a one-dimensional stand-alone issue but it is an integral part of a wider process that delivers development security and governance. It is important to mainstream counter-narcotics throughout wider efforts in bringing stability and economic growth to Afghanistan and the wider region. Beneficiaries are the people living in the region law enforcement agencies as well as wider international community. The Programme takes into account vulnerable groups such as women youth refugees and prisoners. Current Finnish contribution is one million euros and Finland has supported the previous Programme phase (2011-2015) with one million Euros and the current Programme (2016-19) with also on million Euros. Suggested additional funding for current Programme would be 2.4 million Euros. The current Regional Programme builds on the results gained in 2011-2015. Some examples of results: 1) increased cooperation between authorities on drugs in the region 2) seizures of drugs or precursor chemicals 3) increased information sharing on illegal cash flows 4) training on drugs drugs addiction and treatment for experts authorities and schools 5) series of systematic data collection and analysis capacity-building activities.

F.a: Inclusive development for... people with disabilities: Supporting the Development of Community Based Rehabilitation in South Africa
more
|
The specific objective of the ...project is to promote an understanding of Community Based Rehabilitation in South Africa as a means of including people with disabilities in development and to advocate for implementation of CBR in both government and civil society initiatives in order to improve the situation of people with disabilities#In South Africa many people with disabilities are poor & marginalised. Policy makers & other stakeholders do not understand Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) as a means of disability-inclusive development. The purpose of the project is to promote & advocate for CBR in South Africa so that people with disabilities are included in development.#The project begins with a baseline study of CBR in South Africa. ##The project is implemented both in rural and urban areas of KwaZulu-Natal province. #The project is implemented by CREATE (CBR Education & Training for Empowerment). CREATE focuses on rights-based CBR in South Africa.

F.A: KILWA COMMUNITY EMPOWERME...NT PROGRAMME
more
|
F.a: Kilwa Community Empowerme...nt Programme
more
|
Kilwa province is one of the p...oorest of Tanzania, and according to the 2012 census had 190 000 inhabitants. Over 90% of the inhabitants make their living by way of traditional agriculture and fishing. The average income level is estimated to be $89/person ($290/person Tanzania as a whole). Due to this, TCRS has included the Kilwa area as part of its community empowerment program. Expected development effects: decreased poverty and sustainable development as a result of growth in target group capacity in the target area. Outcome of activities (i) improved status of women and girls, hiv positive and disabled people, (ii) sufficient livelihood of marginalized and those in danger of becoming marginalized, (iii) participation by project community members in decision making and self-motivated development of their communities, and (iv) transpartent, responsible, and democratic leadership, and good governance in the villages. Activities benefit 1816 direct beneficiaries in 10 rural villages of Kilwa (642W, 681M, 180G, 313B, including 410 disabled people) and 327 bearers of responsibility (122W, 205M). In addition to the direct beneficiaries, the projects sphere of influence includes 9517 individuals (4958W, 4559M). Target groups are children and youth in danger of becoming marginalized, disabled people, women, girls, victims of economic, sexual, and physical abuse, traditional leaders, religious leaders, civil servants, political decision makers and key individuals of organizations. The project is implemented by Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS), which is an experienced and knowledgable actor in working with those living in extreme poverty and refugees, and is competent in a human rights based approach in village communities. The organizations approach works because it activates the villagers to act as their knowledge and skills accumulate. For example, small entrepreneurship is central in improving the situation of those living in extreme poverty, and TCRS has much experience in steering towards this. Administrative ability of the organization in strong, and professionality of the employees high. Gender equality, environmental consideration, hiv and aids education, and rights of disabled people and cross functionally included in all TCRS project work. In the current project term, disbled work and environmentally friendly production methods are developed in particular.

F.A: KISHAPU CLIMATE CHANGE AD...APTATION PROGRAMME
more
|
F.a: Kishapu Climate Change Ad...aptation Programme
more
|
The Kishapu area is one of the... poorest of Tanzania. A challenge is the shortage of potable water. The situation has deteriorated as the local climate becomes drier. Reasons are increased firewood usage due to population increase, and traditional farming methods. This has transformed the area into semi-desert in many places. Chemicals harmful to health have polluted ground water. A new challenge is rainfall unpredictability brought about by climate change, which weakens food security. The project, part of the TCRS village community empowerment program, supports the population in the area in adapting to the change in their habitat and in prevention of desertification. Expected long-term effects: members of village communities within project sphere of influence actively participate in the development of their villages taking into consideration environmental impacts. Results of activities (i) improved status of women and girls, youth, hiv-positive and disbled individuals, (ii) improved availability of clean drinking water, (iii) functioning hygiene and sanitary solutions in schools and homes, (iv) members of village communities in project villages participate in decision making and development of their communities with regard to environmental impacts, (v) behaviour of households is modified to be more environmentally friendly, (vi) transparent, responsible, and democratic leadership in project villages. The Kishapu project area covers 14 villages, and the education project includes 8 313 beneficiaries (3039W, 1671M, 2091G, 1512B, including 213 disabled individuals) and 504 (139W, 365M) bearers of responsibility. Additionaly there are 31 613 indirect beneficiaries. The target groups are children and youth in danger of becoming marginalized, disabled people, women, girls, victims of financial, sexual, and physical abuse, civil servants, political decision makers, and key individuals of organizations. The project is implemented by Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS).
