This project aims to improve t...he lives of street children in Kinshasa by strengthening local civil society organizations involved in the health and protection of children and youth. It provides access for children and youth to primary health care, including sexual and reproductive health services. It supports 15 partner organizations from the “Réseau des Éducateurs pour les Enfants et Jeunes de la Rue†(REEJER) by providing training for staff and essential medications for the children. The project also seeks to disseminate best practices in health promotion and services for street children among the partner organizations and stakeholders in the REEJER network to establish standardized procedures. Project activities include: (1) providing up to 10,000 consultations in primary care and 1,000 for sexual and reproductive health; (2) referring 400 pregnant women, victims of sexual violence or HIV carriers to medical organizations and appropriate partners; (3) organizing six training sessions for staff of public health facilities in the reception and appropriate care for street children; and ( 4) strengthening the coordination structure between REEJER actors and the health sector to provide the most effective interventions.

Support to Tanzania's National... Multi-Sectoral Strategic Framework on HIV and AIDS / Appui au Cadre national stratégique multisectoriel de la Tanzanie

This project supports the impl...ementation of Tanzania's National Multi-Sectoral Strategic Framework for HIV/AIDS. The Framework encompasses a wide variety of activities in prevention, care, treatment, and impact mitigation of HIV/AIDS. Canada's support through this project enables the Government of Tanzania to expand the level and scope of its expenditures on HIV/AIDS throughout all ministries, departments and agencies and all levels of government, with the majority of funding being provided for activities at the district level. CIDA is working in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to strengthen the effectiveness of its aid through: focusing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing coordination and harmonization among donors; and reinforcing mutual accountability. This project fosters greater policy dialogue between CIDA, the Government of Tanzania, and partners, which helps to reinforce efforts for effective, focused aid and long-term development results. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of this project is undertaken in coordination with other donors. The results expected from this project include not only nation-wide progress in addressing HIV/AIDS, but also improvements in the Government of Tanzania's capacity to manage and administer these services, particularly in the areas of transparency, financial management, and accountability. These build on results achieved from CIDA's previous support to Canada's HIV/AIDS Program in Tanzania, which include 55% of mothers receiving antiretroviral (ARV) combination treatment to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in 2008 compared to 34% in 2007. ENSURING A FUTURE FOR ORPHAN A...ND VULNERABLE CHILDREN THROUGH EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT AND THE ECONOMIC EMPOWERING OF THEIR MOTHERS
more
|
Ensuring a future for orphan a...nd vulnerable children through educational support and the economic empowering of their mothers
more
|
The objective of the project i...s to improve the educational and nutritional status of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and to sustain their welfare through the economic empowerment of their mothers or caregivers. The main beneficiaries of the project are disadvantaged and OVC children enrolled in Maedot s Alternative Basic Education (ABE) Centres as well as their mothers or care givers and other family members. The project will benefit 1200 OVC children (550 male and 650 female) and their families in the worst slums of Addis Ketema and Gullele Sub-Cities of Addis Ababa and urban and rural Woredas of Woliso and Zeway Woreda of Oromia Region. Although primary education is free in Ethiopia OVC are unable to attend school because of poverty. Even if the children are enrolled in school they may not be learning because they are hungry or unable to concentrate due to their difficult situations at home. Through this project OVC are provided with access to Alternative Basic Education nutrition and tutorial support. After the three year cycle these children are able to integrate into formal education. They receive a nutritious meal at school and their mothers or caregivers are trained to prepare more nutritious food from locally available ingredients. Project sustainability is guaranteed by ensuring the economic empowerment of the OVC mothers or caregivers who are provided with training and organised into saving and credit cooperatives. The mothers and caregivers are trained in basic business and leadership skills. The project highly encourages the involvement of women in economic activities and leadership affairs and promotes gender equality. As the women are able to support their families through their own income their decision making power in household affairs is increased and their status in the family improved. The local authorities are closely involved in the project and the local communities will also be sensitised about the issues of OVC. Psycho-social support to the OVC and their families is organised through community support groups community volunteer workers and child clubs.

|
2013: HIV/AIDS is one of the m...ajor social factors limiting the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in Ethiopia. To assist the national efforts in reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS and mitigating its impact the project is targeting to improve and sustain the living standard of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and vulnerable groups in Jimma town and Agaro town. The cross-cutting development policy objectives will be taken into account since the project will be working with people living with HIV/AIDS orphans vulnerable women children and youth trying to fight against stigmatisation and trying to give them their full place in the community they are living in focusing especially on women. In addition to that the project will offer needy children the possibility to go to school. The beneficiaries of the project will be selected from all the cultural and religious backgrounds. The project will not create any new structure but will work in close collaboration with the goverment bodies the town administration and the community based organizations. The main beneficiaries of the projects are people living with HIV/AIDS orphans and vunerable children high risk groups including unemployed youth and vunerable women and in extension the whole community. The key project activities are:- Orphan care and support program: monthly financial and material support medical help life skills training and income generating activities for guardians.- PLWHA rehabilitation care and support program: monthly financial and material support medical service counseling life skill training and income generating activities.- High risk women and youth self-reliance program: small scale business/micro-enterprise training and income generating activities.- Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) program and community mobilization.- Information Education and Communication (IEC) program/Behavioural Change Communication (BCC).- Capacity building/trainings.For the second phase of the project the number of catchment areas will be reduced to two: Agaro town and Jimma town. During the first phase of the project the working area was very wide with long geographic distances and the work could not be as efficient as it should. The latest data we collected from the different areas showed that the HIV problem is very big in Agaro and Jimma whereas it is not as obvious in the other places.

The problems of the target com...munities of Woliso and Dilela in Oromya state are varied. The main cause to problems is poverty and the effects HIV/AIDS. The poverty in these specific areas is attributable mainly to lack of knowledge and skill lack of employment opportunities and lack of financial resource and working premises to get involved in income generating activities or self -employment. Orphan and vulnerable children (OVC) are educationally nutritionally psycho-socially and economically disadvantaged. As the mothers/ care givers of these OVC s are poor and destitute almost all of the children cannot go to school unless they get support. The overall objective of the project is to is to contribute to the long term improvement in the social and living conditions of orphan and vulnerable children (OVC) and their mothers / caregivers in the project area. The project will contribute to this goal by these key activities: ? Creating access for Early Childhood Care Development Education (ECCD) to OVC?s in order to support their educational path and to enable their mothers/caregivers the possibility for income generating activities when their children are in care.? Providing the caregivers/mothers income generating trainings like poultry and dairy farming and involving them in the exsiting Micro Credit and Saving Co-operatives organised by Maedot? Giving community awareness trainings about OVC issues and HIV/AIDS in the communities of Woliso and DileleThe main beneficiaries are the OVCs 1200 (840 female & 360 male) their mothers/ caregivers 1925 (95% female) and the 600 CBO members and community elders receiving awareness rsising. The project is targeted to the most vulnerable in the communities of Woliso and Dilele namely the orphan and vulnerable children and their caregivers therefore reducing inequalities is a major focus of this project. Likewise 95% of the caregivers are women therefore this project has taken gender issues into strong consideration. Maedot always promotes fuel efficient technologies to conserve the forest stalk hence climate impact has been considered carefully. The project is working with the existing structures the Ethiopian Government advocates NGO?s involvement in the Micro Credit and Savings Co-operatives monitored by the state. The government also encourages the provision of alternative basic education since they are practically non existent.

Empowering Churches for Street... Children Work. The programme aims to improve the capacity of a local partner to work with street children and orphans. In Kenya, there are currently about 250 000 street children and 1.6 million AIDS-orphans, and the amount is increasing. Many of the vulnerable children belong to both categories. Fida and the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK) have worked together since 2001 to address the needs of these children and their families. The emphasis of the programme is on preventive work done through empowering families and communities. Local FGCK churches are encouraged to start their own programmes, which are then supported in terms of training and small-scale financial assistance. In the capital, Nairobi, the programme runs a street children rehabilitation centre. The programme includes also child sponsorship. Through the programme, FGCK's skills and know-how in working with street children and orphans are built up. Through FGCK's work, the life management of vulnerable children will improve.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME
|
Family Strengthening Programme
|
The programme s long-term deve...lopment goal is the realisation of child rights. The overall objective of the programme is to enable children who are orphans or at the risk of loosing parental care to grow and develop within their natural family environment. These objectives are reached by working with the targeted children families and communities to empower them to effectively protect and care for their children in cooperation with local authorities and service providers. Focusing on vulnerable children reduces inequality. Nutrition health education and employment play a key role. The programme emphasizes women s employment opportunities and girl child education. The objectives are attained by programme specific activities. The chosen activities will depend on the needs identified in the family development plan (FDP) of each participating family. There are three types of activities: 1) Direct essential services to support the child s right to survival protection development and participation. 2) Capacity building of caregivers and the community by training and sensitization so that they are capable and able to protect and care for their children. 3) Advocacy actions aim to improve the overall framework conditions for the children of our target group. At full potential the programme will reach an estimated 1120 children and youth as well as 212 caregivers.

The Country Programmes outcome... is the increased fulfilment of the rights of the children in Uganda by 2021 and the goal is to increase justice and strengthen human dignity and peace in Uganda. The Programme aims to increase access to education, improve standards of living and improve social care and parenting. Through the Programme the capacity of the implementing partner on institutional policy and financial system for sustainable development is increased and awareness of the partner on childrens rights and implementation of existing policies is also increased. Fida is partnering with Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU) who will benefit from the Programmes capacity building and will have improved visibility in the community. The Programme shall contribute to the fulfilment of beneficiary rights, especially in regards to their rights to health, education and adequate living standards within local partners and the Country Programmes working environment as well as empowerment of the partner in Uganda. The programme has 7650 direct beneficiaries and around 52 000 indirect beneficiaries. The Programme includes trainings to the children, youth and parents to provide practical and applicable knowledge on childrens rights to education and healthy life as well as the roles of the right holders and duty-bearers and on life skills. The programme also encourages youth to finalize their education through different activities and support. The Programme will also support the most vulnerable families for the children to have access to education and an adequate standard of living. Psycho-Social Support is mainstreamed to health-related activities and mental health support plays a major role in activities. #The Programme will provide capacity building to the partner. The acquired knowledge, skills and facilities will ensure sustainability of the projects results and positive impacts through building the capacity of final beneficiaries to manage their own life and increasing the partners potential to impact society in greater extent. The partner will be able to fulfil their duty to advocate for the OVC and other stakeholders in the Country Programme intervention areas. The aim is that by becoming a competent partner, the partner can continue the Programme by themselves without external. The main expected result in the life of beneficiary groups is that society will become a safe, just and caring environment for children.

The Social Protection Programm...e aims to reduce poverty among the most vulnerable groups in Zambia in order for them to live a life of dignity and to participate in economic activities. The programme is implementing previously succesfully piloted family grant and child grant models and developing employment pension and social pension schemes. It also strengthens the capacities of the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) and Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS).64% of all Zambians and 80% of the country s rural population live under the poverty line. The Social Protection Programme has proven to be an effective way to impact the extreme poverty in Zambia and the government has showed increasing political and financial support to the programme. In 2014 the government of Zambia will increase its allocation of funds for social cash transfers by 800%. The additional funding from donors ensures that the Ministry of Community Development Mother and Child Health has sufficient capacity and technical support to implement the rapid expansion of the programme to extend the cover of the programme from 13 districts to 50. Finland?s additional funding for 2014 will cover in particular developing an implementation plan for the National Social Protection Policy implementing a National Disability Survey as well as establishing a grievance mechanism which allows beneficiaries to report of any problems in the programme. The programme is a joint effort by Unicef ILO DFID IrishAid Finland and Zambia and the current phase is being implemented between 2010-2014. The additional funding will be channeled through Unicef. The next phase of the programme is currently being planned and it will cover years 2015-17.
