This project will provide evid...ence that offers important insight into the connection between migration, gender, and forest dependence in rural Ethiopia. Need for labour migration, forest resources While most rural households rely on agriculture for their livelihood, many poor households in developing countries use labour migration and forest resources to improve their welfare. Existing research offers simplistic assumptions that migration invariably leads to deforestation in the tropics, and that forest recovery is always a consequence of people leaving rural areas. These assumptions are being questioned, particularly as researchers analyze and document the complex factors that influence migration outcomes. As a result, it is not clear whether labour migration complements, or serves as a substitute, for forest product extraction by migrant-sending households. Furthermore, whether and how labour migration influences intra-household gender relations, food security, and forest dependence at the places of origin is unclear. Insights into the effects on households The Ethiopian Economic Association/Ethiopian Economic Policy Research Institute (EEA-EEPRI) will collaborate with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) on this project. They will explore the effects of migration and remittances on household forest dependence, food security, and intra-household gender division of work. Researchers will investigate the degree to which those effects vary across different migration types (for example, domestic versus international migration, and rural versus urban) and across socio-economic groups and locations. A better understanding of these issues is of crucial importance in Ethiopia for a number of reasons. The government has formulated and implemented specific policies on gender, forestry, and food security. However, the ways in which rural out-migration is influencing the achievement of gender equity, forest conservation, and rural food security goals are not well understood. This research will aim to propose options for policymakers and development partners. Project leadership This project is made possible through the Think Tank Initiative (TTI). TTI is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy.

Background: The IUC partnersh...ip with UL started on 1 April 2010, after having successfully terminated the pre -partnerprogramme started on 1 October 2008. The University of Limpopo was established in 2005 following the merger of the University of the North (UNIN) in Polokwane and the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) in Pretoria, both classified as `historically disadvantaged' universities.The University of Limpopo plays a key role in national as well as provincial development. It is regarded by the Department of Education as a national `flagship' particularly in the medical fields, and in relation to its context of rural development in a predominantly black impoverished community. The University is ideally placed to address challenges facing South Africa and the rest of Africa in the fields of health, food security, poverty and indigenous knowledge systems. The IUC -cooperation focuses on strengthening the University's human resources and research capabilities and is in line with the University's `flagship niche areas' that are to be developed into centres of excellence. • Designated as the Executiv...e Agent for Department of Defense (DoD) HIV support for foreign militaries in 2001, DHAPP also is the DoD implementing agency for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), established in 2003. In coordination with the Department of State, US Agency for International Development, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Peace Corps, the PEPFAR team works together to mitigate the HIV pandemic and stop the spread of the AIDS virus.
The DHAPP Management Office at NHRC provides day-to-day direction along with operational and functional oversight of the DoD effort. DHAPP coordinates activities with the Department of State Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator and implements the DoD programs in the PEPFAR initiative. DHAPP also prepares and delivers periodic reports and assessments to the Assistance Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and/or designated Deputy Assistant of Secretary Defense (DASD).
In fiscal year 2013, DHAPP trained over 7,000 health care workers to provide HIV clinical services; reached over 740,000 military and family members with comprehensive prevention messages; 630,000 military and family members were counseled and tested for HIV; 55,000 pregnant women knew their HIV status based on testing and counseling services; and 200 new laboratories were equipped and supported for HIV testing and diagnostics.

MCSP is reducing maternal and ...newborn mortality and morbidity in Burma by strengthening the midwifery profession. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other partners, we promote best practices in maternal and newborn health care, and provide capacity building support to the Myanmar Nurses Midwives Association. We focus on evidence-based, high-quality interventions to reduce the leading drivers of maternal mortality in the country: postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, and sepsis. MCSP also addresses the major causes of newborn death through improved neonatal resuscitation, prevention and management of pre-term birth, care for preterm/low birth weight newborns, and identification and management of newborn infections. And we work with the MOH to provide national technical assistance for malaria in pregnancy and integrated community case management.
