Despite a drop in the number of refugees and migrants reaching Europe last year, the dangers many face along the way have in some cases increased, according to a new report by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, setting out changing patterns of movement.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 9,768 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea through the first seven and a half weeks of 2018, with just over 53 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided almost evenly between Greece and Spain. Gaps in data covering refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and internally displaced populations are endangering the lives and wellbeing of millions of children on the move, warned five UN and partner agencies today. In 'A call to action: Protecting children on the move starts with better data', UNICEF, UNHCR, IOM, Eurostat and OECD together show how crucial data are to understanding the patterns of global migration and developing policies to support vulnerable groups like children.
